2 The distribution of inserts by newspapers is one of today s most effective ways to reach a mass market of prime prospects with the finest in print advertising. The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News welcome inserts. We make every effort to meet advertisers objectives. This booklet is designed to help advertisers and printers of inserts provide us with materials in a manner that will facilitate insertion and distribution on time and in good condition. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLICATION 1. Acceptability All advertising/preprint inserts are subject to approval and acceptance by The Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News. We have the right to reject any advertisement we feel to be inappropriate. We have the right to cancel any advertisement/preprint insert, even if originally acknowledged and accepted for publication. 2. Availability The Philadelphia Inquirer (daily) Full run and part run targeted areas. Distribution is available Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Materials delivered to the Schuylkill Printing Plant. The Sunday Inquirer Full run and part run targeted distribution areas available. Materials delivered to the Schuylkill Printing Plant. Daily News (daily only) Full run and part run targeted areas. Distribution available Tuesday and Thursday only. Materials delivered to the Schuylkill Printing Plant. Trend, Star, NE Times, South Philadelphia Review (weekly hand delivered publications). Distribution available mid-week. Materials delivered to the Schuylkill Printing Plant. Please contact your Inquirer/Daily News sales representative for full information regarding quantities needed. See delivery instructions to our two insertion facilities in this booklet. 3. Requirements Inserts running in multiple papers/markets may use the phrase Advertising Supplement to followed by a listing of papers involved. All copy resembling editorial matter must be identified with the word Advertisement at the top of each page in not less than 6 pt. type, all capital letters. 4. Quantities Delivered quantity requirements are based on an estimate of circulation ordered plus provision of or gross press run of the newspapers, estimated shipping and machine damage. Circulation is variable; therefore, it is recommended that the advertiser confirm delivery quantity requirements with his Philadelphia Inquirer/ Daily News/ IQTMC sales representative just prior to ordering print-run. However, The Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News will not be responsible, nor provide rate adjustments, for shortages, or overages realized through circulation fluctuations, or circulation missed which is caused by poor printed material or poorly packaged pallets. SELECTED AREAS MUST BE A MINIMUM CIRCULATION of 10,000. 2

A sample quantity of 150 pieces must be furnished for a test run. B. The advertiser agrees to accept any unanticipated extra costs that may be incurred in handling these special supplements. C. It would be to the advertiser's benefit to contact us for packing directions on this type of material. Good packing results in good distribution. 4 SHIPPING AND DELIVERY REQUIREMENTS 1. Identification Individual pallets must carry a corner pallet tag visible from two sides of the pallet. The pallet tag must include the following information: Name of newspaper Supplement name Edition date of insertion Total number of supplements shipped Number of copies on the pallet Total number of pallets in the shipment Individual pallet number (e.g. 1 of 10 pallets) Pallets must be loaded on the truck so that the pallet tag is displayed facing the fork truck operator. 2. To Insure Full Distribution All supplements must be delivered to reach our receiving docks no more than 16 days or less than 10 days prior to issue date. All shipping charges are the responsibility of the advertiser. C.O.Ds or unpaid freight deliveries will not be accepted. 3. For approval, contact Jerry Fuhrmeister, Product Manager, Multiple Issue Dates and Publications Shipments of multiple issue dates and publications are not acceptable and must be shipped separately according to issue date and publication. 7. Receiving Hours SPP: 7:00am to 2:30pm Monday - Friday. SPP: Saturday 6:00am to noon (Hours may be subject to change during the months of Sept. through Jan.) Bill of Lading The bill of lading must indicate the following information: The total print order The name of the publication The number of inserts per pallet (The Philadelphia Inquirer or Philadelphia Daily News) The total number of pallets The name of the insert and the issue date No receiving 12:00am-6:00pm on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. 5 PALLET LOADING SPECIFICATIONS 1. Supplements must be suitable for machine inserting and must not be tied together in bundles with rope, string, wire or rubber bands, nor should they be packed in small boxes. 2. Preprinted supplements must be properly jogged in turns of a minimum of 50 copies to a maximum of 12 inches and stacked on pallets. Pallet preference is plastic returnable 40 x 48 four-way entry. If not available, solid base, non-returnable, wooden fourway entry pallets in good condition, not to exceed 42 x 48, will be accepted. 3. Supplements must be brick stacked with interlocking layers. 4. All supplements must be stacked on pallets in consistent turns, well jogged, securely banded and plastic stretch/shrink wrapped. The entire pallet must be well protected, as well. 5. Stacked product should cover the pallet and never protrude beyond the limits of the pallet. 6. Pallet tops should be hardwood or sturdy synthetic, same size as the pallet base. 7. A protective cover should be placed on the pallet prior to stacking and another before topping. This will minimize the possibility of damp or curled sections. 8. Sheets of cardboard, or suitable binder sheets, not waxed or coated, should be placed on the pallet prior to stacking preprints and between layers to keep supplements flat. 9. Folded edges of the supplements should be turned toward the inside of the load whenever possible to prevent damage. 10. Banding should be tight without pulling down and bending the top turn or pulling loose the pallet flooring. There should be a minimum of four bands on each load. 11. Floor clearance from the floor to the bottom of the pallet base is a minimum of 4 1/2 inches. 12. Maximum allowable loaded pallet height is 5 1/2 feet measured from the floor to top of pallet. Maximum acceptable weight per loaded pallet is 2,500 pounds. 13. Unstable products that are difficult to contain, and where banding is required for lifts, must be put in telescoping cartons with at least 100 copies to a lift. 14. Pallets must be loaded on trucks or trailers for ease of unloading. They must NOT be double-decked these will not be accepted. Chargebacks will be issued for improperly packaged products. Broken or spilled skids requiring re-piling will not be unloaded or signed for. Continue on the PA Turnpike West to Mid-County Exchange Exit #20 (I-476 South). Follow I-476 South to Exit #16. After exiting, follow signs for Rt. 23 West. Turn left onto Rt. 23 West and travel approximately 1.5 miles to Rt At this intersection, turn right into our facility. From Westbound PA Turnpike: Follow above directions. From Eastbound PA Turnpike: Follow Pennsylvania Turnpike East to Exchange Exit #326. After toll booths, take I-76 east to Exit 331B (Rt. 23, Conshohocken Exit). Follow Rt. #23 West approximately 1.5 miles to Rt. 320 intersection. Turn right into our facility. From I-95 Northbound: Follow I-95 North to exit #7 I-476 North. Continue on I-476 North to Exit #16A. Follow the signs for Rt. 23 West. Turn left onto Rt. 23 West and travel approximately 1.5 miles to Rt. 320 intersection. Turn right into our facility. From I-95 Southbound: Follow I-95 South to exit #22 for I-676. Follow I-676 West to I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway). Continue on I-76 West to Exit #332 (Conshohocken, Rt. 23). Follow signs to Rt. 23 West. Turn left onto Rt. 23 West and travel approximately 1.5 miles to Rt Turn right at this intersection into our facility. 6
