What is the Internet Of Things (IoT)? 3

IoT is essentially a system of machines or devices outfitted with datacollecting technologies, so that those objects can communicate with one another or transmit to a collective.

Connected IoT devices used today Vessel tracking AIS (Automated Identification System) Developed in 1990 GPS and telemetry devices for Vehicle tracking Electronic container seals Mobile container weighing devices GPS and Monitoring container devices 5

Disconnected NFC IoT device Many NFC devices are being developed to provide cheap and cost effective sensors for products to manage Quality control Seal break detection Food quality measure temperature and pressure over time Detect bacteria in food and pharmaceutical products Seal break detection Bacteria detection Temperature and pressure logging 6

Mobile container weighing devices SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) required all container weights to be verified before loading onto vessels There was no standard practice for weighing all containers or facilities to do this. Cindicium patented a mobile IoT device that could weigh containers while on the truck and send this weight information to customers and 1-Stop electronically to report the weight of the container to shipping lines and terminals. Weight Container anywhere Complete Pre Receival Advice Process and Merge information 7

IoT communication technology 3/4G technology Expensive for business to use IoT sensors for many use cases restricting their use Higher power consumption requiring larger IoT device and limited applications 5G will offer lower power consumption and their for smaller devices. Cost of operating 5G devices will get cheaper. These two factors which will change the way industry uses IoT sensors for many applications The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance defines the following requirements that a 5G standard should provide for Faster connectivity Several hundreds of thousands of simultaneous connections for wireless sensors Coverage improved Lower latency than 4G equipment and lower battery consumption 8

What does the industry really need from the IoT? Informed Where is my container? How much does it weigh? What was the temperature during its journey? Efficiency lower costs How can I make better utilisation of equipment? How can I move cargo faster? Quality Control I need to ensure quality of goods in transit? 9

INTERNET INTRANET OF THINGS IoT devices are usually designed and built to solve a single problem Carrier Design of the API s are usually proprietary or incompatible Information from IoT devices are consolidated in data silos Several systems need to be accessed to gather information Freight Forward Importer/Export Shipping Line Container weighing services 10

Use case Business use case An exporter would like to deliver their fresh produce their customer on the other side of the world and guarantee the quality of goods on deliver to their customer. Challenges The exporter needs to measure and monitor many different pieces of information to achieve this: Where is the container now? What was temperature are the contents of the container during the trip? Has the container been opened and if so where was it opened? Has the container been delivered? Wharf Customer Empty Park 11

How do I get the most out of the IoT? We need to consolidated information to share or make it accessible to others We need the ability to process this information to make contextual business decisions. 13
