Our operating principle We at aim at creating added value for our customers. The only way to succeed in this is to manufacture excellent products and services. In a nutshell, our entire operating principle can be presented as a cycle, starting from finding out the customer s needs and ending with the final delivery. The key is to be familiar with the customer s process. Every project, whether old or new, starts by meeting with the customer. After the planning phase, we begin the research work, adopt a new production method, if necessary, and carry out the design work and the potential subcontracting. The selection of raw materials is a separate phase that significantly affects the success of the end product. The manufacturing process includes careful quality control and efficient reporting, resulting in a product that matches the desired properties as closely as possible. The process is finished off by the delivery and the logistics, but the cycle never really ends. Our development work continues on the basis of the experience gained. Customer requirement Deliveries Research Logistics Reporting Quality assurance An integral part of the customer s product development, we aim for longterm co-operation, providing high-quality elastomer products. 4 The history of Yhtiöt Ltd goes back to Nokia s rubber works, established in At the time, Suomen Gummitehdas (The Rubber Factory of Finland) manufactured rubber galoshes for shoe protection, as well as footwear, car tyres, hoses and mats. The company s flagship product was tyres, but Nokia slowly gained expertise in all the different aspects of the rubber industry. Nokia gave up the rubber works in the 1980s and 1990s, after which the manufacturing operations were picked up by Nokian Jalkineet Oy, Nokian Renkaat Oyj and Oy. acquired Nokia s factories in Kiikka and Vammala, and later the factory in Kerava. This preserved the accumulated 100+ years of know-how and expertise in rubber works in Finland. began international operations right away during its first years: its first and crucial accounts were the car factories of Volvo and Scania. At the time, the automotive industry was already familiar with terms such as Lean, Just-In-Time, ISO 9000, EDI and 5S. For a fresh company carrying out subcontracting work, learning to master these terms with its very first customers was a stroke of luck the company gained the know-how to operate abroad right from the start. International competition was harsh and decided to rise to the challenge by founding a subsidiary in Germany. The next stage brought along a situation in which one of the company s largest customers requested that they move a part of their production closer to Asia, the main market for this customer. The decision was easy: the account was established and the company was familiar with the required technology. In 2008, s second subsidiary was founded in Suzhou, China. Today, operates in Finland in Vammala, Kiikka and Kerava as well as in Germany, Russia, and China. 4

Manufacturing of milkliners started in Kumijaloste Oy during the late 1970s. The rubber mixture was developed in cooperation with Bayer, who could provide the highest possible know-how on using rubber in food products. In Finland, the milkliners were marketed under the name Leiko in the 1970s and 80s. In the early 1990s, Hankkija Oy was responsible for the marketing of the milkliners. After this era, FinnLacto Oy has taken care of the marketing. The products are exported under the name FinnLiner. 5

This co-operation guarantees a diversified, fast, cost-efficient, and innovative product development that benefits our customers. 8

Development of FinnLiner The FinnLiner milkliners have been developed individually, according to the requirements of each machine brand and model. This is why the milkliners are different from each other in terms of their form and functionality. But as common features, they all meet the requirements of the foodstuff regulations and they are all manufactured to meet high quality standards. The functional differences between the milkliners have been investigated in several contexts, which is important for the manufacturer s R&D and when selecting the most appropriate product for the user. The studies are focused on, for example, the stretchability and closing force of different milkliner models. The studies also focus on finding out important factors for the user, such as the milk yield, milking seed and rubbing. As a result of R&D, automation has been one of the key focus areas in the manufacturing technology. 9

Raw-materials We have long experience with products that have critical health or sensory properties. Compounds are always designed to comply with the hazardous substance restrictions and coming restrictions of REACH legislation. We have manufactured products for the food, pharmaceutical and safety industries where odorless and tasteless products, as well as minimum migration of chemicals are important. uses different materials in different applications in contact with food. Some rubber compounds are exclusively designed to be used in these applications and to fulfil the food contact material regulation of different countries. We have many compounds and products which fulfil the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, United States, paragraph 21 CFR (e)) demands for rubber goods in contact with aqueous or fatty foods, or the European Article 16 Regulation EC 1935/2004. Another often referred to demand is the German BfR XXI, many of our products and hoses are designed to be used in category 2 or 3 applications, such as milking machines. We follow the changes of these different demands actively and also develop new food contact products. Our rubber compounds are mixed in our Finnish mixing plant Sekoitukset Oy. Sekoitukset is a specialized manufacturer of high-quality rubber compounds. We buy other food contact polymer materials, such as TPEs, from well-known western material suppliers. The food contact testing of these compounds has been carried out by internationally recognized third party laboratories specialized for this kind of tests. 10

Certified and tested products The raw material of the milkliners has a crucial impact on the mechanical strength of the product. This is why all materials used are thoroughly tested in the R&D department in Finland. The milkliners and food quality hoses are certified and tested, according to the food safety standards (SGS). The low bacterial content of milk enables production of high-quality food products. This is why the high quality of the milk processing machines and accessories and their suitability for the safe processing of milk is of vital importance. In addition to the technology and materials, has paid special attention to the suitability for animal use. To ensure a good milking result, the product must be comfortable for the cow and prevent, for example, mastitis by assuring good blood circulation in the teats. The durability of milkliners has been tested in laboratories and in Chinese dairy farms. The durability has proven to be of top class. The milkliners were found usable, even after 3,500 milkings. 11

European quality The mechanical milking technology is largely based on the functionality of this rubber component. The milkliner collar provides a solid grip in the teat, maintaining the blood circulation in the teat. It also prevents air from entering the teat cups during milking. The milkliner has a high significance to the milking outcome and this is why its development includes a great deal of research and testing. The milkliner is one of the most demanding moulded articles to manufacture in terms of the rubber grade, dimensional accuracy and quality control. Despite its deformations during use, the rubber must maintain its softness, elasticity and dimensions for its whole life cycle. It must endure wash-ups and detergents and influences of, for example, lactic acid and fat. Naturally, the rubber grade must also meet the tight requirements set for food usage. The used material must not leave any residues in the product s rubber grades are developed with this in mind, too. Suzhou works in close cooperation with the units in Finland, in order to bring the high european quality to the growing Chinese market as well. Good references concerning the long term use of our materials in the North European dairy industry Optimizing low migration levels during material development On-time information on the latest developments in chemical safety due to direct contact with the ETRMA (European Rubber and Tire Manufacturer Association) Food contact materials program Reliable compounding of materials, using European chemical suppliers The history of manufacturing the Finnish FinnLiner milkliners dates back many decades. is one of the few manufacturers of the product, which reflects the high standards in this field. The manufacture of milkliners is an example of specialising in highly demanding pressure moulding and in the top technology in this field. 14
