EU Initiatives on research and innovation and the emar project Nordic Expert Meeting Regional Maritime Monitoring Cooperation Haugesund, October 25 26, 2011 EC - DG MOVE Research and innovative transport systems Christos Pipitsoulis

On the way towards the future of EU maritime transport January 2009: EU maritime transport strategy until 2018 March 2011: White Paper on Transport March 2010: Europe 2020 strategy: employment, innovation, education, social inclusion and climate/energy Maritime Transport services for global and European trade, EU economic development and mobility: sustainable, low environmental impact safe and secure competitive and affordable 2

Europe flagship initiatives 1. Digital agenda for Europe 2. Innovation Union 3. Youth on the move 4. Resource efficient Europe 5. An industrial policy for the globalisation era 6. An agenda for new skills and jobs 7. European platform against poverty 3

White Paper Roadmap to Single European Transport Area. WP 1992 Opening the transport market WP 2001 Rebalancing modes to fight capacity. constraints WP 2011 Putting transport in the wider EU 2020 perspective Towards a competitive and resource efficient transport system A vision for the transport system of target (-60% of GHG emissions) and 10 indicative goals/benchmarks to guide policy action How to do it 4 i s and 40 actions 4

White paper goals and benchmarks 40 concrete initiatives aiming to a competitive transport system for increased mobility, reduced Europe's dependence on imported oil and cut carbon emissions in transport by 60%. Including key goals: No more conventionally-fuelled cars in cities.. 40% use of sustainable low carbon fuels in aviation; at least 40% cut in shipping emissions. A 50% shift of medium distance intercity passenger and freight journeys from road to rail and waterborne transport. 5

White Paper 2011 strategic objectives. Developing and deploying new and sustainable fuels and. propulsion systems Optimising the performance of multimodal logistic chains,. including by making greater use of more energy-efficient modes Increasing the efficiency of transport and of infrastructure use with information systems and market-based incentives. 6

the EU e-maritime initiative is aimed at fostering the use of advanced information technologies for working and doing business in the maritime transport sector e-maritime strategic framework and pilot implementation SST Upgraded maritime transport information management emar 26Oct

emar will deliver:.an e-maritime Strategic Framework (EMSF) bringing together into a coherent whole concepts, processes, standards and technologies.a prototype e-maritime Platform based on existing technologies and outputs from ongoing projects, to establish upgraded solutions for acquiring, handling, exchanging and sharing essential data.a pilot implementation to facilitate its practical evaluation and determination of specific policy, standardisation and future research requirements emar 8
