3 e m o c l e W Welcome to the University of Bedfordshire s MSc Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management course which is located in the Department of Strategy and Management within the Business School. The University of Bedfordshire Business School is endeavoring to take global business education, research and practice in imaginative new directions. Your journey on the practice-led curriculum begins with Welcome week at the start of your course immediately before the first block of teaching. During the welcome week you will receive a comprehensive induction to the university and your course be actively engaged in various activities to make sure that you are fully prepared for the start of your course. Socialising and getting to know your peers is an important part of this week and fun activities are balanced with guided reading and group activities to support your learning experience. All the units that you will study are designed to enhance your personal and professional development by combining your learning of the subject knowledge with the practical skills necessary to succeed in your chosen career. We do this by embedding within the learning experience the use of real life case studies, live consultancy projects, business simulations and other interactive approaches to support your experiential learning. Your personal and professional development will be developed as you progress through your course, the delivery of which is designed to enable you to benefit from studying alongside new and more experienced students. In your final masters capstone unit you will opt to complete either a dissertation, live project, internship or professional placement. Regardless of which option you chose, it will require you to integrate and apply all of your learning to address a focussed problem with the rigour underpinning academic enquiry. This, along with future horizons activities planned to support you taking your next step, will prepare you to transition to work in contemporary organisations or progress to further academic study. 03

8 3.0 EDUCATIONAL AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The educational aims of the course are grounded in the University s mission to provide challenging and innovative learning and teaching that empowers the active and professional learner. The aims are also rooted in the mission and practice of the Business School to provide enterprising and fit for purpose courses that are necessary for businesses to expand and diversify. The Learning Teaching and Assessment strategy on the MSc Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management supports these aims through the development of an engaging and stimulating learning environment that engages actively with research and scholarly activity. Purchasing, logistics and supply chain management are critical to the success of both manufacturing and service industries, be it global or domestic in scale. It encompasses the functions of procurement, production, distribution, transport, and customer services, with a diverse range of management styles and structures. The course is designed to prepares you for a range of careers in management, specifically, in managing logistic, procurement, supply chains, inventory, and transportation. 08

9 To achieve this, the course has been designed to enable you to: Develop the range of knowledge, skills and values at the professional level and to master the knowledge specified in the fields. Advance the study of organisations and supply chain networks, their integrative management, and the changing external context in which they operate. Apply relevant knowledge and business and management skills to solve complex problems in organisations both systematically and creatively to improve business and management practice Therefore, the course will cover a range of study areas to reflect the skills and knowledge needed by today s professional purchasing, logistics and/or supply chain managers. The course provides a challenging learning experience integrating theory and practice. All units are designed to support intellectual development and strategic thinking and to encourage creativity and innovation in practice through a focus on the application of theory to practice in contemporary work organisations. You will also have opportunities for peer networking and learning that enable you to enhance your personal development and prepare you for the next step in your career. During the course of the studies, you will be developing your knowledge, skills and wider attributes. The broad intentions are set out in the course learning outcomes as follows: Demonstrate critical understanding of relevant theories, methodologies and techniques of a wide range of logistics and supply chain management functions applicable to diverse organisations. Demonstrate a critical insight into current practices in procurement, projects, logistics, and/or supply chain management within a variety of environments, and how these practices are managed locally, nationally and over international boundaries. Be able to make feasible plans for procurement, logistics/supply chain operations, and/or projects management, apply suitable methods, tools or techniques for process and quality management, and critically evaluate their results and effectiveness. Be familiar with the relevant professional codes of conduct and corporate social responsibility issues, demonstrate professional communication skills appropriate to working with both internal and external personnel and stakeholders, and be able to justify, respond and present the outcomes in a manner appropriate to the audience. Demonstrate the ability to creatively solve complex and pervasive problems in the subject areas, and in doing so form sound judgments in the absence of complete data, and be able to communicate conclusions and recommendations appropriate to both a specialist and non-specialist audience. Demonstrate effective self-management in terms of planning, behaviour, motivation, individual initiative and enterprise in order to meet the demands of a Master s degree in Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, while taking responsibility for personal learning and continuous professional development. 09

10 COURSE STRUCTURE COMPLETE ONE UNIT EVERY 2 MONTHS The course has been designed to be flexible, inclusive and transparent to enable you to achieve the course learning outcomes and have a quality learning experience. The course is delivered using a unit delivery pattern; you will undertake one unit at a time for six weeks and that will be a unit of delivery. At the end of four Units (Eight months) you will progress to the Master s capstone experience stage where you will opt to complete either, a dissertation, a professional placement an internship or a live project unit. Each of these options will include an element of research methodology which is embedded within the unit. The unit structure is designed to provide you with an integrated, developmental and challenging learning experience. The course starts with welcome week which is a full week of activity designed to introduce and induct you to the university and the course. This week includes an embedded introduction to both professional and academic development, information on the learning environment and what you will need to do to be successful in your studies and an introduction to the choices available in your final Masters capstone unit. As you progress through the course, there will be an opportunity before each new module to reflect on your progress and development to date and plan your next steps and future action to maximise your achievements. The MSc Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management is made up of seven units four core units, and 3 options. Each unit has an academic level and a specific credit rating which indicates the amount of learning hours it will require. The course comprises a total of 180 credits. 12 6.0 SUBJECTS MODULES UNIT NAME Aims and Relevance GLOBAL LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management is an area that is rapidly gaining importance and focus as businesses address the challenge of meeting increasingly demanding customer expectations globally. There has been a growth in interest in how organisations manage the flows into, within, and out of their enterprises and recognition that this fundamentally affects their competitive position. In an increasingly competitive marketplace those organisations that appropriately embrace logistics and supply chain management rationale will strengthen their ability to compete successfully. This unit aims to enable you to: Have a sound understanding of the various dimensions of the complex and dynamic subject of logistics and supply chain management; Examine critically the key issues of contemporary developments and practices in logistics, supply chain management and other related areas, and solve practical problems creatively by using relevant and well researched theoretical concepts and frameworks. This unit will introduce you to well-developed theories and concepts in global logistics and supply chain management. In particular it will concentrate on contemporary developments within subject area of the course, and the increasing integration between the highly related areas of logistics management, supply chain management, and sustainable operations management. It will consider the ways in which these developments are expanding and challenging the traditionally accepted roles and objectives of these functions and how integration can contribute to enhanced competitive advantage for organisations. 12

The competitive environment for operations demands new ways of thinking about the way we approach the management of our own organisation and those we network with. Global sourcing and relocation are now commonplace for manufacturing and service organisations. The unit first seeks to provide a fundamental understanding of operations management. This foundation is then developed into the new ways in which organisations should be managed in the global context. The unit also explores the theory and principles of project management for a wide range of project types.it will consider the appropriate application of project management tools and techniques. The aim of this unit is to enable you to: Critically evaluate the principles and techniques associated with Project and Operations Management both in manufacturing and service industries in the private and public sectors; Critically assess the relationship between operations and other functions within an organisation, and the need for integration between marketing, operations and human resources which is essential for modern business to meet customer needs; Critically evaluate the implications of taking a global perspective of project/ operations management. Consider the significance of project management and the role of a project manager in modern businesses. Select and use appropriate project management tools and techniques to plan a project. 13

This dissertation provides you with the opportunity for sustained independent study that builds on your research proposal and represents the culmination of your Master s level studies. 14

15 Syllabus Content Following an initial two weeks when you will be introduced to the processes and techniques associated with research methods, you will be allocated a supervisor, who has relevant knowledge and expertise. Your supervisor will support you in developing your ideas, to ensure that you collect appropriate data to address your research question. Your supervisor will also provide feedback on samples of your written research to ensure it complies with the standards expected for a dissertation at masters level. By engaging within a live project you will have opportunity to apply your existing knowledge and experience in response to a number of work based scenarios involving critical evaluation and reflection to propose appropriate courses of action to a business client. In so doing you will gain the opportunity to develop the qualities and transferrable skills required for continued employment and or continued research. Through the challenging environments inherit within a unit of this nature you will directly enhance your awareness or the professional, social and behavioural contexts of the internal and external environment. 16 7.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants who wish to undertake the MSc Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria: Applicants should have at least a Second Class Honours degree, or equivalent, with some relevant work experience OR Applicants with over five years of work experience at senior level of management can also be considered. 7.1 ENGLISH REQUIREMENT Where the applicant s medium of instruction (at a tertiary level) was not English, the applicant must have obtained: (i) a score of 575 or better on the TOEFL; or (ii) a score of 6.5 or better on the IELTS; or (iii) a credit or better in English in the GCE O or A levels or equivalent 16

17 8.0 PRACTICAL INFORMATION 8.1 STARTING DATES Please contact Oxford College of Business regarding course starting dates 8.2 LOCATION, FACILITIES AND RESOURCES Located at the heart of Colombo, Oxford College of Business is in close proximity to all amenities, banks, blue-chip companies and restaurants are all within walking distance from the campus. Oxford College of Business have a dedicated state-of-the art post-graduate fully equipped class rooms. Students will have access to wireless internet, canteen, and computer lab for online research and complimentary membership of one of the largest libraries in Sri Lanka. As a student of UOB, you will also be able to take advantage of the free access to Univesity of Bedfordshire s BREO interface where you will gain access to lecture guides and a variety of reading resources. 8.3 STUDY SUPPORT Shortly before commencing the course, researchers will be invited to join a study skills seminar conducted by the Head of Academic at Oxford College of Business. The purpose of the Study Skills Seminar is to introduce students to the advanced academic study protocols, a brief introduction about the roles played by the Oxford College of Business and Univesity of Bedfordshire and general study techniques. Oxford College of Business s dedicated academic and operational staff will be with you every step of the way if you require any assistance. 8.4 DISABILITY Both Oxford College of Business and University of Bedfordshire is aware of the requirements of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 and seek to ensure that OCB practices the Act and will seek to encourage and follow. Concerning special educational needs (e.g. dyslexia) special provision is made for assessment for course work depending on the individual needs of the student. All formal teaching and learning is undertaken using on premises that provide reasonable access for you if you would have any concerns about mobility. Advice on the nature of specific disabilities and the reasonable adjustments which can be made to accommodate disabled students is available from the Disability Advice Team. If you have disclosed a disability (includes long term medical conditions and Specific Learning Difficulties such as dyslexia) to Oxford College of Business, please contact Oxford College of Business medical doctor for an appointment. At the appointment, the doctor will discuss your learning support needs including examination access arrangements, where appropriate. It is important to get this support in place as soon as possible so they can support you to achieve your full potential. 18 8.5 ATTENDANCE All students need to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance for each module in order to be eligible to take each examination at the end of the semester. 8.6 COURSE DURATION One year (Including Dissertation/Thesis) 8.7 CLASS TIMINGS Sunday 1.00pm 7.00pm 8.8 ANNUAL GRADUATION Students can visit the international graduation ceremony held at University of Bedfordshire UK at the end of each year or take part in the local graduation organized by Oxford College of Business.
