A vision for railway research, innovation and skills development nis Schut ERRAC, ERRAC Roadmap and UIC 20 October 20

ERRAC - commitment to innovation A unique body bringing together: Railway undertakings Infrastructure companies Urban and regional transport operators Manufacturing industry Representatives of the EU Member States Customer groups Academics institutions European Commission

ERRAC - commitment to innovation ERRAC - Enhancing collaborative European rail research by: Building consensus among stakeholders. Improving synergies between EU, national and private rail research (identify priorities). Strengthening and re-organizing research and development efforts. Effective pooling of human and material resources. Designed a Railway Vision, a Strategic Rail Research Agenda (SRRA) and Roadmaps towards the future. ERRAC is committed to innovation since 2001

The aims of the SKILLRAIL project and final workshop he SKILLRAIL project aims: To contribute t to the enhancement of the transport t sector by fostering a better match between the human resources needs and the offer of skills to make railways a more competitive and innovative sector To deliver contributions for the updated Vision for the European Railways and provide the conditions to develop, at European level, high quality training and education activities for the railway community of tomorrow

Some background information Rail: the present situation, trends and needs Rail: the future The sustainable backbone of the single European Transport area Rail Transport for a sustainable future The Rail Sector, a strong pillar for European economic growth Challenges and trends ERRAC Commitment to Innovation

Present situation, major trends and needs The rail system already provides very attractive solutions for the transport of goods and people in terms of safety, environment, total journey time, low emissions and low energy BUT: Volume of traffic is expected to radically increase in the future while a large part of the European network is already working to its maximum capacity Therefore there is a need: or action to increase the capacity of the railway network or action to enable effective modal shift towards rail. or action to develop its attractiveness and competitiveness.

The future: Rail - the sustainable backbone of the single European Transport Area Rail transport is the most environmentally friendly means of transport Rail transport is the safest means of transport Rail transport offers competitive connections between European metropolitan centres essential for cohesion and economical growth Rail transport for essential for urban mobility

ail Transport for a sustainable future (EC White Paper) 30% of road freight over 300 km should shift to other modes by 2030, and more than 50% by 2050, By 2050 the majority of medium-distance passenger transport should go by rail. A fully functional and EU-wide multimodal TEN-T T core network by 2030, wit a high quality and capacity network by 2050 By 2050, connect all core network airports to the rail network, preferably high-speed; Deployment of the modernised traffic management infrastructure in Europe by 2020 (ERTMS and GALILEO) By 2020, establish the framework for a multimodal transport information, management and payment system

The Rail Sector A strong pillar for European economic growth e railway sector - a major industrial sector. e global l rail market it accounts for an estimated 136 Billion Euros with an pected growth of 2.0% to 2.5% annually until Billion Euros e European rail supply industry alone accounts for an estimated 400,000 ect and indirect jobs throughout Europe. is adds to more than 1,350,000 workers employed by European infrastructur anagers and railway operating companies. ployment from urban railway operators is at least as important.

The Rail Sector, a strong gpillar for European economic growth The railway sector can play a major role for the success of the EUROPE 2020 strategy have implemented a unique integration of long distance high speed, regiona urban and freight networks on a continental scale. Underpins a smart and sustainable growth as well as a more competitive low carbon economy. the railway sector intends to realize the social challenge of climate change b enabling an effective modal shift towards rail.

Increased transport demand Globalisation Trends Urbanisation and metropolitan areas development will continue An ageing society and changing and variable needs Environmental consciousness Increased liberalization and competition Right prices (internalisation of external costs) and distortions avoided Increased regulation Use of new technologies, e.g. alternative traction concepts and information and communication technologies Knowledge and information ato will increase and knowledge transfer worldwide will be faster The mobility of the workforce will increase

Challenges Meeting customer s expectations: through technology innovation; Increasing environmental performance: reduced energy consumption and noise emissions, Improved power regeneration and energy supply and recycling of construction materials and refurbishment of rail vehicles and infrastructure Improving capacity: product innovation in control command; target new interoperability requirements in safety and security, reliability, maintainabilit and interoperability; improvethe information management systems Achieving interoperability and effective co- and inter-modality Maximising (sub) urban transport efficiency and connectivity

ERRAC- Continued commitment to innovation ERRAC will even stronger than ever - continue to function as an operational platform for stakeholder cooperation and coordination for the medium and long term, continuously updating its vision, setting its goals, adapting its strategy and developing its roadmap and on this basis advising on the different frontier and applied focused research activities needed in order to best answer to the requirements of its customers and thereby enhance its market share The Innovation chain from blue sky research, applied engineering up to demonstration and market uptake (roll-out / deployment) shall be fully addressed

Linking to SKILLRAIL: Challenges related to human resources To provide a suitably qualified work force To make the rail sector attractive ti to young engineers To provide high quality education opportunities in order to enable this work force to deal with an increasingly technology- intensive rail transport system. Training activities will be needed into the use of technology t increase the productivity of staff.
