4 Regulatory Authority New Jersey RMW Tracking Form contains 6 copies. Generators (shipper) must complete the generator (shipper) portion and sign the certification: - Completes items 1 through 15 - Signs the certification at Item 15 Transporter: - Verifies the quantity - Notes any discrepancies in Item 23 - Completes and signs item 16 4

5 Registration Generators (shippers) must register with the NJ Dept of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Each office or location that generates RMW must be registered A completed Annual Generator (shipper) Report (AGR) must be completed and sent to NJDEP by July 21 of each calendar year Information on registration may be found by calling Medical Waste Technical Assistance may be found by calling

6 Definitions RMW in New Jersey Six Categories of Regulated Medical Waste Cultures and stocks of infectious agents Human pathological wastes Human blood and blood products Sharps Certain animal wastes Isolation wastes Unused sharps Carpules are considered sharps 6

7 Sharps Generators (shippers) must properly select sharps containers in order to protect employees during transport Definition of Sharps Needles and syringes Scalpel blades and lancets Glass pipettes, slides, and tubes Broken, contaminated glass Staples and wires (cardio-catheter wires) Orthodontic wires Disposable suture sets and biopsy forceps Electrocautery tips (no cauterizers or batteries) In NJ, unbroken glass is considered a sharp 7

8 Storage Provide protection from elements, animals Maintain integrity of packaging Maintain in non-putrescent state (refrigerate if necessary) Dispose of immediately if putrescent Lock outdoor storage areas Access to on-site storage areas only to authorized employees No longer than one year 8

10 Training Since Regulated Medical Waste contains sharps and potentially infectious substances, all affected employees are required to have initial and annual OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training Stericycle can provide the necessary DOT training for your employees. Please contact your sales or customer service representative for details The transport of Regulated Medical Waste is regulated by the United States Department of Transportation as a hazardous material while it is in transport. All affected employees (those who perform the functions of either packaging or signing the shipping papers) must complete DOT hazardous materials training initially and every three years thereafter 10
