Abstract In many parts of today s manufacturing process a product is removed from one manufacturing line and moved to another. Resulting from this move data collection, such as the environmental condition is often collected for the whole process line for a given time range, and not the direct product going through that line at a given moment. Moreover, variable product mix can affect an entire line s environmental characteristics. Understanding this variability it would seem logical to measure environmental data at the product level, rather than the process level to ensure product-level compliance within prescribed environmental tolerances. This project will encompass the creation of an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) device that will monitor, log and transmit environmental data to a cloud-based database service. The device will also keep track of the product in which it is monitoring, with minimal user interaction. It will be a portable device suitable for continued use in a 24x7 manufacturing environment. The second aspect of this project is to promote the three concentration areas I have selected as part of this degree program. While it may seem excessive for an academic capstone, the overall intent is to use this project as a springboard for my employer. As a result I will keep specific products and processes generic to their industry standard terminology to avoid any conflicts in regards to intellectual property. Details on the design of this product and how each element relates to one or more concentration areas is listed in a below section.

Deliverables The heart of this project will be a Raspberry PI Zero W. This is a very small single-board computer that incorporates both IEEE and IEEE radios. Aside from being a powerful SBC based on an ARM processor, the PI Zero W only draws an average of 120mA when idle. This will attribute to a long battery life, which will be required for this operation. The project will include a number of analog and digital sensors, working in unison to create a data logger that is universal to a variety of applications Figure 1: IIoT Infographic

RFID Reader The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader is used to read an associated RFID tag attached to the product the data logger will monitor. This is an industry standard tag that operates on a frequency of MHz. The tag s serial number will be stored as the primary key in the database, but will not be resolved to any direct product identifier. It is assumed that another data table will hold the appropriate lookup data to resolve the tag s serial number to the appropriate product. Digital Temperature Sensor The temperature sensor will sense the current ambient air temperature. Digital Humidity Sensor The humidity sensor will measure the current environment s non-condensing humidity as a percentage. Accelerometer The accelerometer will be used to measure any vibration, jarring or crashing of the product being monitored. UV Light Sensor UV light could affect the drying or curing of the product, so the logger will measure and record the amount of UV light in the nm spectrum. Azure Cloud To facilitate the cloud component of this project, while ensuring it could easily be moved on on premise infrastructure, the Azure Cloud will be leveraged. Microsoft SQL Server The database instance will be comprised of MSSQL, however any basic relational database leveraging ODBC could be used. Real-Time Dashboard A Real-Time Dashboard will be created so that products within the process line can be monitored and the environment could potentially be adjusted as required. Mobile Integration A mobile component will be leveraged to assist in module configuration and display basic realtime data during a process cycle.

Battery Powered A key component is that this device needs to be portable and last for the duration of a long process cycle. A Lithium Polymer battery will deliver the required current while maintaining a small size and lightweight. Onboard Display A small OLED display will be incorporated with the device to assist in basic configuration, such as network parameters, basic diagnostics and operating parameters such as battery life remaining. 3D Printed Case A custom printed case will be designed and printed to hold all the components of the data logger in a compact form.

Out of Scope This project is designed to be a data-logging system only. As such, elements such as real-time alerting and process adjustments are considered out of scope. The device s function is to capture and log data, and nothing more. Relationship to Degree Program and Concentrations In my degree program I was allowed to bypass both foundation courses, however I am still required to complete the full credit-hour requirements to fulfill the degree. Because of this I am able to fulfill three concentrations. Listed below are the concentrations and how this project will prove mastery in each. Information Systems Management All elements of this capstone will be scheduled using Microsoft Project. A copy of the initial schedule is in a below section. I will apply an Agile-like methodology as my project management choice. As this is an individual project I will be able to leverage what I feel are the best elements of both major project methodologies to keep this capstone on track. Software Engineering Aside from the hardware aspect, the software development is one of the largest elements of this capstone. Various operating systems, programming languages, databases and related environments will be used. The system will also have software designed to store and forward data as required when a network connection back to the cloud is not available. Web and Mobile Computing The major web and mobile components are the connections to the Azure cloud, dashboard and mobile connectivity to the logging device. Wireless communication design and

Schedule Figure 2 shows the preliminary project schedule. The schedule timeline will be adjusted as needed before the project begins and the final project timeline will be recorded in the project write-up. The project schedule will be reviewed on the scheduled bi-weekly meetings. Figure 2: Preliminary Project Schedule

Presentation Design I visited the CIS Master presentations in winter of This was my first visit, but from my reading I know this was the second time a combination of lighting round talks and poster presentations were used due to the number of projects in recent terms. I enjoyed professional layout of the tri-fold design, however was not impressed with the plotter-paper binder clipped to poster board. I feel that the capstone project is the one opportunity to show the world that mastery has been achieved. My presentation design will follow all rules set forth, but will include a more professional construction method of direct-to-print poster. During the poster sessions I will also have a few examples of the data logger operating along with a view into the dashboard and mobile application.
