7 RFID at Lahey - Background 1999/2000 Early Adopter of RFID System/Limited Success. System shortcomings/lack of staff buy-in 2001 Evaluation of Biometrics, Iris scanning, RFID. RFID technology chosen for most flexibility physical security, asset management and employee identification Introduced Passive RFID system for access control. Chose WinPak from Honeywell Discussions with our Biomedical Engineering contractor, GE Healthcare for active RFID for asset tracking. Looking for a corporate commitment. 2005/06 Development of an agreement/partnership with GE (Initial Focus on Asset Management)

8 RFID at Lahey Background (cont d) 2005 Upgraded the passive RFID system, WinPak 2005 (Honeywell) 2007 Commitment to expand the Active RFID infrastructure to cover both our Burlington and Peabody's entire facilities Began transfer to a network based RFID passive system (Synergist from Genetec) (currently) Evaluation of new systems for Active RFID Asset Tracking. Looking for exact location (room detail), alerts for low battery and non movement of assets.

9 Active RFID Asset Tracking We use GE Healthcares RTLS (real time locating system) IntelliMotion System to track over 3000 pieces of portable inventoried medical equipment at our two main facilities. More and more nurses and clinicians are using IntelliMotion, however we need more features. Lahey will convert to a newer technology in 2011.

Invisible inventory due to movement between Lahey North and Lahey Burlington, leading to increased rentals, loss and over purchases of moveable medical equipment How does RFID solution help? RFID enables real-time visibility of inventory throughout the enterprise, allowing ease of equipment exchange between facilities It shows us how long an asset is in use at each site Greatly improves staff efficiency

Containing Costs Equipment hoarding Excessive rentals, lease/buy of equipments (pumps, vents, etc.) Asset loss/shrinkage (wheelchairs, telemetry monitors etc) All of above result in excessive cost and also affects quality of care How does RFID solution help? RFID brings real-time visibility and right sizing of inventory ; ability to find for PM/repair Allows tracking of rental or leased equipment Prevents assets from walking out with exit alerts (if activated) Gives insights into utilization patterns to help make better purchasing decisions

33 Lahey s Proximity Card They are standard Prox cards vs. some of the newer Smart cards that have come out over the last few years. The newer cards have programmable chips inside that will hold customizable info for each user and higher levels of security than standard cards. But, they are also more expensive and aren t supported by a lot of readers and programs. So we would need to upgrade all of our card readers.

34 Lahey s Proximity Card, (con t) The benefits of the standard cards are they low cost, we can print on them so they act as ID cards, and because they are just a basic card they are supported by the widest range of readers possible. So we can use them for all of our applications. So we get the best bang for our buck. We don t need to upgrade our existing systems to support them, and they are almost universally supported by many systems.
