SAFETY RULES HANDLING

INTRODUCTION Handling is part of daily routine activities ( at work, at home) : You should not underestimate its related risks. 1 accident of 3 is as a result of handling: Back pain is one of the most frequent occupational diseases.

DEFINITION Handling is all about any transport operation or picking up a load : i.e. Lifting, setting, hauling, carrying or moving a load involving physical efforts from one or many persons.

HANDLING MANUAL MECHANICAL

REGULATIONS FOR MANUAL HANDLING The Labor Code specifies that employers should : Give preference to mechanical handling Assign loads on the basis of the age and gender Male : 20 to 55 Kgs Female : 10 to 25 Kgs Train their personnel (on professional operating procedures) Provide appropriate Individual Protective Equipment (IPE)

REGULATIONS FOR MANUAL HANDLING The AFNOR NFX standard is restrictive than the regulation Male : 15 to 18 yrs 15 Kgs 19 to 45 yrs 30 Kgs 46 to 65 yrs 25 Kgs Female : 15 to 18 yrs 12 Kgs 19 to 45 yrs 15 Kgs 46 to 65 yrs 12 Kgs

IDENTIFYING RISKY SITUATIONS Find out whether there have been : accidents at the workplace complaints or observations from the operator work stations classified as heavy work Analysis of the work station following a disease disclosed to the preventive medical officer.

ANALYSIS OF WORK STATIONS RISK ASSESSMENT Characteristics of the load : nature of the load (dimensions of load, weight) Load weights (maxi 55 Kgs M, 25 Kgs F) Difficult pickup of load (no engaging of load, form, dissymmetry, temperature) Personal cause factors : posture (bent, arms lifted up or stretched, twisting) effort on a fork-lift truck : use Peggy-Lift or a pallet truck if distance > 30 m self-propelling truck Beware of cargo handling : distribute evenly the load.

ANALYSIS OF WORK STATIONS RISK ASSESSMENT Environment : distance to be covered (length, up/down, hindrances) dimensions of movements (height, depth) state of ground and of handling equipment : spot elevations, damaged soils, slippery, equipment in bad repair spillage risk Work Organization : Lack of break fatigue and irritability accident Mind work pace, distances, repeated gestures.

REGLEMENTATION MANUTENTION MECANIQUE The use of Hoists Overhead traveling cranes Self-propelling trucks Should be in line with a number of safety rules authorization to operate (compulsory valid training and medical examination) Inspected equipment (in keeping with standard loads) Have carried out routine inspections Provides IPEs

INDIVIDUAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPEMENT Garments protective apron Helmet Auditory protective device Gloves Protective footwear kneepads Body safety belts Goggles, masks, face shields Should be adjusted to the products or the load to be carried

SOLUTIONS In the course of the design of premises (setting up, organization, movements, lighting) facilities (overhead traveling cranes, goods lift) products ( conditioning) While purchasing machinery, hand implements, handling equipment (usability, dimensions, adjustment to products to be handled ) Job re-design : Consistency between the collection and removal heights Putting various equipment used frequently in safe areas Design a work station in relation to posture (adjustable seats, buttock rest) floor levelers, otherwise mean height Slant racks suspension system relating to hoisting, hand implements

SOLUTIONS Maintenance of equipment (wheels, truck in good repair, bands ) Improved work organization : Reduce movements Release of traffic corridors Cooperative work among staff (avoid people who are used to the task) Enough personnel to mitigate the incident or a busiest period Make room for breaks Avoid working alone Have at one s disposal appropriate IPEs

SOLUTIONS Training for operators : being conversant with the workplace and instructions Manual operations : training relating to gestures and postures, medical examination Mechanical examination : Compulsory valid training medical examination, aptitude test Make sure that the appliance is appropriate as well as its appurtenances Inspected equipment in compliance with existing standards Routine maintenance Routine inspections by an authorized agency.

LIFT ON/LIFT OFF - CRANAGE

PRE-LIFTING CHECK Weather condition : winds (10 or 14m/s) fog, storm Lifting plan : compliance with the existing one feasibility of the procedure in force. Environment : obstacles, cross rack with product lines cables Configuration and correct blocking cranes, spreader plate for the load even on tar and cement concrete Marking out of the work and lifting area.

PRE-LIFTING CHECK Laden operation for checking purposes if needed. actual or estimated weight of the parcel Compliance and resistance of singing points (ears, bearings, etc.) Compliance of slinging equipment Personnel Access for slinging, guiding and de-slinging purposes. Ascertain whether the part is no longer fixed or held Communication Code between the chief operator and the jibcrane operator (gesture and or radio-based)

WE CHECK

WE CHECK SAFETY CLIP

COMPLIANCE WITH THE HOISTING PLAN Beaconing the hoisting area Beaconing the work area

SLINGING Ensuring linking between the hoisting appliance and the good

SPECIFICATIONS Its resistance should be sufficient enough to lift the parcel. Its resistance should be sufficient enough to lift the parcel. Slinging should not damage the parcel Slinging congestion should be compatible with the environment of the operation.

SPECIAL RULES RELATING TO LIFTING AND HANDLING As art of any lifting operation, a safety perimeter related to falling object risks should be materialized (See marking out). For all work in progress within the safety perimeter will be stopped during lifting phases. Lifting appurtenances should be inspected according to existing regulatory controls and bear official control marks, During lifting operations, weighted and guiding cords will be used systematically.

It is strictly forbidden to fasten a lifting or handling appliance (hoists, hand-winches, ) to Process piping, whatever the diameters involved, provisional facilities (scaffolding, plant). Cable anchorage will be done basically in relation to the unit s departments following the approval of the maintenance area manager.µ As part of lifting operations, all drivers and operators should be trained and cleared by their business executive. In the course of work stoppage, the list of cleared personnel should be made and forwarded to the work stoppage manager by the stakeholders concerned.

HOIST ARMS AND OVERHEAD TRAVELING CRANES Some unit equipments are fitted with hoist arms or overhead traveling cranes. Any use of them by off-site companies will be subject to the approval of the work stoppage manager and in any case upon preliminary inspection: Of the capacity of the equipment to support loads, Of the confirmation of the absence of derating especially following regulatory checks and tests
