The Connected Cold Chain The Technology of Reefer and Genset Telemetry TPM Conference Cool Cargoes Technology Session 1 3 March 2015

You probably should not be in this session if you can t tell the difference between these things

The Connected Car

Access music, data, social networks Send diagnostics to repair shop in advance of arrival Track car and driver location for safety and security Determine insurance rates Manage fees and tolls Calculate taxes

Can the cold chain do the same? Visibility GPS/GSM based tracking of ~2M reefers and gensets Monitoring Integration with controllers of all suppliers to provide full data through new standard protocol Compliance Meet emerging standards of multiple countries and global governmental bodies for cargo condition Security Ensure safety of cargo in face of variable threats

What we had to date Collect data at front of reefer or genset, paper or mobile data device Accuracy and assurance to schedule are key No alarm capability High risk to crew on vessels Original automated telemetry solution for reefers based on modulation of data over power line to box ISO standard Limited to locations where power exists (vessels, terminals,)

The Connected Cold Chain Today we have cloud based application platforms integrated with on-board telematics devices equipped with GPS, GSM and other sensors to provide real time, two way control of intermodal and other transportation assets.

How cold chain telemetry works GPS GSM Network Application Client

Telemetry hardware GPS GSM for communication, possibly Zigbee or Bluetooth Integration directly to OEM controller Integrates sensor technology fuel motion Door RCU mounting in PLM slot

Visibility and the Connected Cold Chain

Views on Cold Chain technology BCO o Wants visibility and access to data but not always willing to pay cargo value is key o Worried about transshipment and longer vessel times, technology to provide alerts o Compliance is on their shoulders, need the data, especially if pharma

Views on cold chain technology Trucking/Rail o Mostly silent player, no dog in the fight o Need to demonstrate willingness to work with BCOs

Views on Technology Container Terminal/Container Services providers o Has existing monitoring contracts but GSM may remove ability to supply (replaces PLM) o Worried about loss of services revenue, if GSM adopted o Conversely, sees this as new revenue stream

Views on Technology Probably do it if we have hard internal ROI or clients paid for it Shipping lines o Will bear costs and risks for technology adoption o Finding real ROI at scale o Rationalizing transition path/investment in existing older PLM technology versus GSM what to do about vessels and terminals o Standardization of GSM derived data o Integration of data across multiple cold chain nodes.. o Rationalizing technology versus alliances

The challenges to the Connected Cold Chain.. Increased shipping line adoption Stronger BCO voice The next set of standards Ownership/supply of data Rationalize the alliances

Is there enough value? Reduce costs for 3 rd party monitoring services Reduce cargo and asset loss and theft Reduce costs for asset related services: PTI Monitoring Data logger downloads Dramatically reduce fuel use and theft Reduce re-positioning costs

Is there enough value?... Locate lost/stolen equipment Increase asset utilization Provide maintenance information for faster M&R Increase vessel capacity and crew efficiency New opportunities to invoice customer for data and services Improved customer satisfaction & retention Winning high value cargo shipments from air transport

Final thoughts Technology is not the issue BCO pressure may drive immediate growth similar to the Connected Car? Broad divergent views on technology adoption across shipping lines will create uneven adoption and take some time
