10 years Global Food Safety Initiative: - 10 standards accepted - 6 st revision planned of the bench mark standard in 2010 Once certified, excepted everywhere? - Diversification of standards continues. - Position GFSI: the market will decide which standards will prevail

10 years Global Food Safety Initiative: - Geography: North American and Asian retailers have accepted the GFSI standards and play an active role in the GFSI board.

10 years Global Food Safety Initiative: Public versus private standards. - GFSI accepts only private standards with a standard owner and the option to sanction the standard owner or the standard content. So, ISO standards will not be accepted. - Product certification (EN 45011) or System certification (17021) is no longer an issue, if a standard fulfils the GFSI bench mark criteria: pre requisite programmes in place, standard protocol that allows control of the standard owner on the implementation of the standard, on top of the accreditation of CB s

GFSI bench marked schemes: Post farm gate: BRC Global Standard Version 5 Dutch HACCP (Option B) FSSC Global Red Meat Standard Version 3 International Food Standard Version 5 SQF 2000 Level 2 Synergy 22000

GFSI bench marked schemes Pre farm gate: GlobalGAP (Fruit and Vegetable Scope Options 1 and 2 only) PrimusGFS SQF 1000 Level 2

The logo s: IFS:2007 CCvD (Dutch HACCP) BRC:2008 SQF:2006

The logo s:

BRC BRC:2008 (Food, Packaging, Storage & Distribution, Consumer Products) - Implementation of the BRC directory Auditor competences Reports + partly translations (English) KPI s for certification bodies: 42 days, reporting - Strong support for developing US market - 2 nd revision Storage & Distribution standard to be published in 2010.

IFS (Food, Logistics, Broker, Cash & Carry and Household chemicals & products) - Recently, the Broker and Cash & Carry standard are published: Broker: trade only; if physical distribution is involved, the ILS applies Cash & Carry: applies for wholesalers including product handling (fresh shops in Cash & Carries). For the 3 rd party audits the ISO rules for sampling apply from the 2 nd year onwards, including 5% unannounced. - Investments in the integrity program: Internal & witness program Sanction catalogue Data analysis + complaint procedure IFS:2007

FSSC (Food Safety System Certification) - Standard is published, accepted by GFSI, first accreditation end of ISO (requirements) PAS 220 (requirements) ISO (Regulations) FSSC regulations + extra requirements - PAS 220 covers the pre requisite programmes of BRC / IFS - Auditor qualification rules more tighten than ISO more audit time than ISO Food supply chain only - Registration of certificates by Foundation for Food Safety.

Board of stakeholders FSSC CIAA (European Food and Drink Association) European Food Manufacturers GMA (Grocery Manufacturing Association, US) EMRA(European Modern Restaurant Association) IIOC (independent international organisation of Certification Bodies) IQnet BSI (British Standards Institute) SCV (Foundation for Food Safety Certification) IAF and ISO are observers

GlobalGAP - Publication of version 3.1 of the General Regulations Sanction rules for certification bodies - Integrity programme Cipro - More focus on life stock, aqua culture - Next revision (4) published in October 2010, implemented in 2011

Others: - Based on ISO guidelines, PRP programme (ISO ), certification scheme. - Swiss based independent organizations. - Same approach as FSSC 22000

Others: - Scheme developed by the Danish Meat Association. - Purpose: promote Danish Meat. - Vertical Meat Standard

Others: - Cross over between GlobalGAP and BRC - Scope: Fruit & Vegetables

Other challenges from the retail - Chain of Custody: what is the origin of a product? - Sustainability: what is the impact of a product on the planet and the people (producers)? Sustainabilty market defined by specific product / region / risk combinations: - Marine Stewardship Council (MCS): sustainable fishery of wild fish - UTZ: sustainable production of cacao, tea and coffee - RSPO: Round table sustainable production of palm oil.

Marine Stewardship Council: - Private organization with its own accreditation body (Accreditation Services International) - Scheme is devided in a Fishery standard and a Chain of Custody standard - Chain of Custody = mass balance = database - Logo is used by retail (Aldi, Lidl etc)

UTZ - Private organization; recognizes certfication bodies, based on competence. - Scheme is devided in a production standard (country of origin) and a Chain of Custody standard in the countries of desitination - Chain of Custody = mass balance or a credit system. - Logo is used by retail.
