Shift2Rail, from a Test Bed for AI to Delivering System Transformation 25/09/18 - EUROCONTROL, Brétigny (France) Giorgio Travaini Head of Research & Innovation S2R Joint Undertaking

what is S2R A public-private partnership, a platform for the rail sector as a whole to work together to drive innovation in the years to come until 2024 The S2R Joint Undertaking has been created in June 2014 to play a major role in rail-related research and innovation, ensuring coordination among projects and providing all stakeholders with relevant and available information on projects funded across Europe. It shall also manage all rail- focused research and innovation actions co-funded by the Union Council Regulation (EU) No 642/2014 of 16 June 2014 (S2R Regulation) It has been tasked by the Union to establish and develop a strategic Master Plan, which encompassed rail R&I until 2030, it reached autonomy in May 2016 and it is now fully operational

Some S2R ongoing activities with AI, a first test bed

Cost-Efficient and Reliable High-Capacity Infrastructure Intelligent asset management: towards predictive maintenance, based on intelligent monitoring/analysis of the assets. IT decision supporting tools based on machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence. Enhanced energy management: smart metering of the energy consumption for optimised use and link to smart-grid Cost-efficient and reliable trains, including high-capacity trains and high-speed trains: New TCMS: coupling different trains, use of wireless communication within vehicle/consist, drive-by-data technology and function distribution architectures lower weight, increased services and advanced automated control possibilities, virtual coupling.

Advanced Traffic Management and Control System Optimised Traffic Management System advanced driver advisory system, intelligent, automated and flexible dispatching systems including conflict detection and resolution to allow for predictive and dynamic real-time traffic management Advanced ATO for railway lines; GoA4 will reduce human error and increase service availability New and dynamic control of train management based on Virtual Coupling and On-board intelligence IT Solutions for Attractive Railways Services Interoperable framework: semantic based IT solution capable of making interoperable different databases using different standards, without the need of changing the legacy systems Business analytics: providing to the operating companies the means to understand and adapt their offer to a real time multi-modal demand Artificial Intelligence companion: based on data fusion, map matching, and BlockChain approaches for involvement of users during, before and after a trip through a Human-like-Machine interface

Technologies for Sustainable & Attractive European Rail Freight Fleet Digitalisation and Automation : Digitisation of Rolling Stock leads to smart, connected assets that offer the necessary information for improved services and also is a pre-condition for efficient and reliable automated freight trains. Digital Transport Management :Optimise service planning and operation and support better utilisation of available capacity. Paradigm shifts for railway Arising and promising disruptive technologies (e.g. A.I., robotics) : 1. Concepts for the future autonomous railway vehicles train-centric 2. Promising disruptive technologies impacting automation systems and maintenance concepts 3. Full system and life-cycle analysis on concepts as mobility as a service (MaaS), industry 4.0 (automated industry and industry as a service), railway clouds and decentralised ownership
