Class Introduction What is your Name? Do you own a drone? What do you want to get out of this class? Anything else you want to share?

What is a Drone?

What is a Drone? A drone is an aircraft without a human pilot on board. Drones are one part of an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) which includes: 1) Unmanned aircraft 2) Ground-based control or transmitter 3) System of communication between the two Drones may operate with various degrees of autonomy, either under the remote control by a human operator or autonomously by an onboard computer.

What is a Drone? The following terms have been used to describe a drone: suas (small Unmanned Aircraft System) Quadcopter, Quad, Multi-Copter R/C Helicopter, Heli, Copter Model Aircraft, R/C Aircraft, R/C Airplane Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) Remotely Operated Aircraft (ROA)

Types of R/C Drones Fixed Wing model airplane Rotary Wing helicopter Multi-Rotor quadcopter, multi-copter

What can you do with an R/C Drone? Recreational drone activities Aerial Photography Get a Different Perspective Scenery and Sunsets Vacation Photos & Video Home Movies & YouTube Video Sports Filming Biking, Running, Canoeing Selfies Fly for Fun FPV (First Person View) Flying Drone Racing

What can you do with an R/C Drone? Commercial Drone Uses Precision Agricultural Aerial Photography Marketing Real Estate Sales News & Information Aerial Video & Movies Aerial Advertising Education & Research Environmental Studies Sports Filming Thermal Imaging Public Safety (Police, Fire and First Responders) Search & Rescue Construction Civil Engineering Aerial Inspection of Bridges, Buildings, Windmills Street Mapping 3D Mapping & Modeling of Surface Topography Mining Exploration Power Line Inspection Oil & Gas Surveys and Inspections

History of Drones World War II B-24 Liberator equipped as a Drone

Radio Controlled Target Drones OQ-3 Radioplane Target Drones built during WWII

MQ-1 Predator drone July 1995 Enters service for the USAF Cost $4,030,000

Drone Swarms

Cell on Wings (COW)

R/C Model Aircraft (1968)

R/C Model Aircraft (2019)

The radio-controlled Parrot AR Drone was revealed at the International CES 2010 in Las Vegas. Price $359. First Toy Drone

DJI Phantom I 2013 First ready-to-fly Personal Drone Price $679

Types of Consumer Drones (Not all drones are created equal) Micro & Toy Drones smallest size, inexpensive ($), limited features, short flight times, no camera fly slow indoors Hobby Drones medium sized, higher cost ($$), more features, basic camera & gimbal fly slow outdoors Selfie Drone medium size, higher cost ($$), follow me feature, basic camera & gimbal fly slow indoors and outdoors Racing Drone small & medium sized, higher cost ($$), fixed low resolution camera, rugged fly fast indoors or outdoors Prosumer Drone large, highest cost ($$$), many features, long flight times, 4K camera on 3-axis gimbal fly slow outdoors

Three-Axis vs Six-Axis Gyro Stabilization All multi-copters require stabilization. Three-axis or 3D gyroscopes stabilize roll, pitch and yaw. Six-axis gyroscopes integrate a 3D gyroscope and 3D accelerometer to adjust for movement in the roll, pitch and yaw directions. Roll: rotation around the front-to-back axis Pitch: rotation around the side-to-side axis Yaw: rotation around the vertical axis

Consumer Drone Market Today The market is still in it s infancy Technological change is rapid Market consolidation of drone manufacturers

Drone Market Today DJI has 70% market share in the USA. The Mavic series has become the standard drone for prosumer videographers with the new Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom.

DJI News in January 2019 DJI reported a loss of one billion yuan ($150 million US dollars) due to employee fraud, according to Bloomberg News. DJI fired 45 employees whose illegal activities inflated parts costs an average of 20 percent. Disruptions in the supply chain is reducing production and delaying new product introductions.

Drone Market Today The Parrot ANAFI camera drone is a popular choice for photographers. The Bebop 2.0 improves on the original and has a 25 minute battery life.

Drone Market Today The Yuneec Typhoon was originally designed for commercial applications. In 2018, Yunecc launched the first ever voice controlled drone, the Mantis Q.

Drone Market Today Autel Robotics has market-leading quadcopter and camera drone technology. They emphasize easy-touse aerial devices for photography, filming and imaging.

Drone Market Today GoPro has withdrawn their Karma drone from the market, but GoPro cameras are popular options on many drones.

FAA Estimates of suas Fleet Size in the US The FAA is registering 1,000 commercial suas aircraft each week! By 2022, the FAA predicts over 400,000 commercial drones and 2 million recreational suas aircraft

1.1 Million FAA Registered Drone Pilots* 878,000 registered recreational pilots 122,000 registered commercial drones 8400 registered pilots in Iowa 370 registered pilots in Black Hawk County 159 registered pilots in Waterloo 111 registered pilots in Cedar Falls *As of January 2018

The Future Recreational drone sales are leveling off DJI is forecasting slower growth in drone sales Growth market is in Commercial Drone activities #1 growth market is Agriculture Market consolidation 3D Robotics, GoPro & AirWare have fallen from the sky New Sensor, Software and AI advancements More Regulation Public Distrust & Privacy Beyond Visual Line of Sight operation
