2 Vikrant Vaze - 2 of 5 National Talent Search Scholarship Fellow, National Council for Educational Research and Training, Government of India, (awarded in 1999). RESEARCH INTERESTS Multi-agent systems, game theory, mechanism design, simulation and statistical modeling, large-scale optimization of transportation and logistics systems, air transportation, supply chain management, network design and optimization, pricing and resource allocation over networks. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Research Assistant, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, MIT Sep Present Role of Airline Competition in Airport Congestion Mitigation using Demand Management Strategies Advisor: Prof. Cynthia Barnhart Established the connection between airline competition and airport congestion using non-cooperative game theoretic models. Studied the differences between airline scheduling with and without competition. Proved the suitability of Nash equilibrium-based predictions through empirical and computational evidence. Proved, mathematically, the convergence of two different myopic dynamics for the non-equilibrium situations. Proposed innovative demand management strategies to alleviate airport congestion, and showed how some simple slot reduction strategies can benefit all the major stakeholders. Research Assistant, Operations Research Center, MIT Sep Jun 2010 Modeling Passenger Travel and Delay Patterns in the United States, and Understanding the Impacts of Airline Scheduling Practices on Passenger Delays and Disruptions Collaborators: Douglas Fearing, Prof. Cynthia Barnhart Developed a novel methodology, based on data fusion and discrete choice modeling, for retrieving disaggregate passenger travel patterns in the US national air transportation network using various publicly available aggregate data sources. Extended an existing greedy heuristic for passenger reaccommodation and delay estimation. Built an elaborate framework, consisting of models and a rich source of disaggregate passenger data, for analyzing the air transportation system s performance based on passenger-centric approach to aid policy decision making. Research Assistant, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, MIT Sep May 2007 Calibration of Traffic Simulation Models for Dynamic Traffic Assignment and Route Guidance. Advisor: Prof. Moshe E. Ben-Akiva Researched the problem of calibrating macroscopic highway traffic assignment models using emerging traffic sensing technologies. Modeled the problem as a large-scale, simulation-based optimization problem with uncertainty, and analyzed the performance of various algorithmic approaches for its solution.

3 Vikrant Vaze - 3 of 5 Identified gradient approximation-based stochastic optimization algorithms to be the most suitable for such problems because they require very few objective function evaluations, which is a very costly operation for simulation-based optimization. Summer Intern, Institute for Transport Planning and Systems, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland May - Jul 2005 Continuous Space Geometric Representation of Human Activity Spaces Advisor: Prof. Kay W. Axhausen Summer Intern, Department of Geodesy and Surveying, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Budapest, Hungary May - Jul 2004 Spatial Representation of the Strength and Precision Characteristics of GPS Signal Advisor: Prof. József Ádám TEACHING EXPERIENCE Lecturer, MIT Fall, J: Transportation Systems Analysis: Performance and Optimization Class size: 24 Co-instructing, along with Prof. Amedeo Odoni, one of the two core subjects in MIT s Master of Science in Transportation program; substituting for the half of the course previously taught by Prof. Cynthia Barnhart. Introduced the students to linear, integer, and network optimization techniques, with special emphasis on mathematical modeling of transportation systems. Emphasized on the need for good formulations, tight bounds, and efficient algorithms for solving large-scale problems, through several lucid in-class examples, and through the assignment problems. Plan to demonstrate the usefulness of these OR techniques in transportation through real-world case studies in the latter half of the course. Teaching Assistant, MIT Fall, J: Transportation Systems Analysis: Performance and Optimization Class size: 32 Lecturers: Prof. Amedeo Odoni and Prof. Cynthia Barnhart Conducted weekly recitations to complement the lectures, and taught software tutorials. Prepared teaching material including case studies, problem sets and exams; graded case studies and problem sets. Assisted graduate and undergraduate students from varied backgrounds including economics, finance, business, operations research, aeronautical engineering, civil engineering, urban planning and policy. Transportation Research Record, 2021, pp PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Associate, Algorithmic Trading Desk, Lehman Brothers, New York NY Jul Aug 2008 Developed and managed six different proprietary algorithmic trading strategies with combined daily trade value of over $2 Billion; was solely accountable for three of those strategies. Analyzed rich empirical datasets on the market microstructure, and came up with ways of exploiting the short-term price and order quantity variations; suggested and implemented improvements to the algorithms and models through statistical back-testing and optimization. Owned and maintained a SQL database of order execution performance that served as a platform for trade execution research. Interacted and communicated with clients, internal traders and sales representatives in real-time, highpressure trading environment. Operations Research Analyst Intern, Sabre Airline Solutions, Southlake TX May - Aug 2006 Initiated structural changes to the demand forecasting and revenue optimization modules implemented by the Department of Revenue Planning and Decisions. Reconfigured the demand forecasting module of Sabre s revenue management product (AirMax: Low Fares Manager) to improve the forecasting accuracy. Developed a dynamic programming prototype for testing various pricing and inventory allocation strategies; the results helped convince important client airlines, which were on the verge of leaving, to stay.
