Repetitive motion injuries associated with removing or manually inserting caps are eliminated, thereby protecting human resources. All tubes of 65 to 100 mm length and 11 to 16 mm diameter are processed in mixed operation without pre-sorting (other tube sizes can be accommodated upon request). The control software can be programmed with any tube processing criteria and is designed for online and offline operation. Tubes with a diameter of mm are closed with an archiving cap. Just pour closed specimen tubes (e.g. the S-Monovette ) into the bulk loader no sorting or handling required. Tubes are automatically placed onto the processing track of the Bulk Loader. The barcode and sample type (serum, EDTA, citrate, etc.) are then identified via the integral ID module. Samples are sorted into centrifuge adapters, feeder/exit trays for laboratory lines, analyzer racks, standard racks, BL 1200 ID carriers or HCTS2000 MK2 target bins per customer specifications. Tubes are either distributed according to defined parameters or to sample-related information received from the LIS (laboratory information system). Plausibility checks detect and sort out error samples. 13

Depending on the sample material, centrifuged or non-centrifuged tubes are placed directly onto the HSS feeder platform in their respective racks. The HSS registers the barcode and cap color, opens the sample tubes according to the respective workstation and sorts them into the specified rack types (e.g. Abbott, Beckman, Roche, Siemens, etc.) for analysis. After routine analysis, the tubes can be sorted or taken directly from the analyzer racks, recapped, and transferred to archiving racks. The customer-specific configuration of the layout for various carriers can be easily and completely modified with a FlexPlate, enabling the use of a variety of source and target carriers for routine or archival processing. ical applications 15

It is able to handle any kind of rack and tray type. As an open system, it is complementary to any analytical platform or can be used independently. Loading of unracked or racked sample tubes is via the Bulk Loader (see p. 12) or in racks via the loading platform, which is suitable for closed and open tubes. ID modules for reading barcodes and identifying tube types are available. Barcoded secondary tubes are prepared and the requested volume is dispensed at the Aliquoter. No more sample mix-ups will occur and the available volume will be used in the most efficient way. There are two versions of recapper modules for archiving or for shipping samples. Tubes are either closed with an archiving push cap (for any diameter between 13 and 16 mm) or with a screw cap (for Sarstedt tubes with a 13 or 15 mm diameter, e.g. S-Monovette ). 17

Just pour tubes into the Bulk Loader no sorting or handling required. Alternatively, open or closed sample tubes in any rack or tray are placed onto the loading platform and fed into the system. The FlexPlate (see p. 15) enables a variety of sample carriers ID modules with a range of functions such as reading barcodes and identifying tube types via camera are available. For efficient sample processing, each tube must be identified by the barcode. The barcode may also include information on the type of specimen to be analyzed. The tube type is also identified to ensure trouble-free processing. The decapper module removes screw caps and push caps alike. Any tubes sized from 11 to 19 mm diameter and 75 to 120 mm length (with cap) are processed in mixed operation and without prior sorting. Different tube sizes may be accomolated upon request. The push caps and screw caps are safely removed and disposed of hygienically. 18

Sample mix-up is avoided and the available sample volume is used in the most efficient way. Refer to page 28 for information on available secondary tubes. The AMC module can pipette small volumes into multiwell plates or cluster tubes for space-saving long-term archiving or for bio-banking. This enables archiving to become part of routine processing there is no need for a separate step. There are two versions of recapper modules available. Tubes are either closed with archiving push caps for any diameter between 13 and 16 mm, or with a screw cap for Sarstedt tubes (e.g. S-Monovette ) with 13 or 15 mm diameter. According to requests received from LIS (laboratory information system) or a strictly defined rules, e.g. cap color, tubes are automatically sorted to any rack or carrier types (refer to FlexPlate, p. 15). For the Bulk Loader HCTS2000 MK2, tubes are distributed to target bins assigned to individual working areas. Tubes sorted for archiving are registered in a protocol that includes the tube ID, carrier number, position on the carrier, and time stamp. Complete sample tracking enables immediate access to all samples. 19

New developments in collection materials and increasing standardization help to meet this challenge. Sarstedt has 20 years of experience in microbiology automation. The Petri Dish Organization System makes the working steps required to prepare dishes for further processing more transparent, safer, and more efficient. Mix-ups are avoided while maintaining a consistently high throughput. Our Petri Dish Transfer System makes processing procedures significantly faster by transporting stacked sets of Petri dishes to individual workstations. 21

The free-standing system provides customized solutions and is adjustable in height within a defined range. Laboratory tables and benches can be conveniently positioned close to the PTS. The design is based on the individual requirement for culture medium at each workstation. Samples are registered with a scanner, and the required plates defined. As a user interface, it links both the user to the automation system and the automation system to the laboratory information system (LIS) or any middleware installed. Enabling easy visualization of system components, the software portrays internal sample transport paths, logistical transfer, the orientation and filling status of the carriers on the feeding and release platforms, as well as the current status of the functional modules. The configuration enables almost unlimited possibilities of parameter assignment to workstations, carriers, and tests, handling general and custom distribution rules as well as processing by order of precedence. Information on the sample processing status and orders can be easily retrieved, and empirical data compiled and printed. The information storage time on the database can be defined to customized requirements. Communication between the automation system and the LIS proceeds on an ASTM-based protocol either in the query or batch mode. Moreover, the system is suitably designed for use of additional interface protocols. 27

28 Consumables for Laboratory Automation Clinical Laboratories S-Monovette With automation advancing in clinical labs, the requirements for blood collection tubes have changed. The tubes must be designed to comply with a range of defined preconditions for sample identification using barcode readers, centrifugation, decapping and recapping, sorting, and sample transport in analyzer line pucks. The S-Monovette 75 x 13 mm is ideally suited to meet these requirements and available with any preparation. Aliquot tubes Depending on the application, aliquot tubes with 13 or 15 mm diameter are available with and without false bottom, and push or screw cap. If required, the tubes are automatically recapped. Screw cap tubes are ideal for long-term storage and transport. Archiving push caps and screw caps Archiving push caps for any tube diameter from 13 to 16 mm minimize the evaporation of sample material during storage. Tubes can be automatically capped and recapped if analyses need to be repeated. Screw caps are recommended for long-term storage and transport tubes. Pipette tips A conductive black tip is generally used to dispense samples into aliquot tubes. The fill level is determined conductively and the tip immersed for pipetting. During the pipetting process, the tip descends as fill levels drop. The slim design enables pipetting from narrow tubes. Racks The universal block rack made from polypropylene is highly resilient, stackable, and autoclavable. It is ideal for use as a carrier to individual workstations at sample distribution systems as well as for archiving. The double- or quadruple-block options, in particular, provide a space-saving solution for sample backup storage. Racks are available in a range of colors for easy identification at the workstation and in archives. Microbiology Petri dishes Made from crystal-clear polystyrene, our Petri dishes for use with hot agar are heat-resistant to 80 C. Thanks to their enhanced dimensional stability, they are particularly suited for all automated processing steps from labeling, stacking, streaking, and incubation, to automated analysis. 28
