Southern Alberta: Growth of Import and Export Opportunities for West Coast Ports
Stakeholders for the Study Port of Prince Rupert Province of Alberta Calgary Regional Partnership Calgary Economic Development Rocky View County Cando Rail Services
Reason to do the Study To look for opportunities to grow import and export business into and out of southern Alberta Determine what commodities can be exported through the west coast ports Look at further development of the Calgary Region as a major Distribution Hub Create a document that provides benefit to all stakeholders in growing their business opportunities
Five Phases of the Study 1. Growth Potential for Agricultural Back-Haul Containers 2. The Calgary Region as a Distribution Hub 3. Development and Growth of Reefer Business 4. Automotive Distribution Centre in Calgary Region 5. Development and Growth of Bulk Business (Liquid and Dry)
Growth Potential for Agricultural Back-Haul Containers
Market Overview Between 2010 and 2015: Export of Crops and Livestock up 65% Processed Food Exports up 35% Projected to continue to grow going forward
Alberta Crops Two largest components of crops for Alberta are wheat and canola Pulses are the next largest group of crops (and are growing quickly) Pulses, which are also described as part of the legume family, include: Dry beans Edible beans Lentils Chickpeas Other edible seeds Very high in protein and fibre and highly valued in Asia Canada is the largest exporter of pulse grains in the world
Supply Chain Today Traditional grains tend to move by rail hopper car to port where they are unloaded at a grain facility and then loaded into cargo holds in ocean vessels
Supply Chain Today Pulse grains also move by rail hopper cars from the country but instead are transloaded into ocean containers at a transload facility close to the west coast ports and are then trucked to the port to be loaded into ocean container vessels
Supply Chain Today
Opportunities for Back-Haul Agriculture Containers Strong growth expected in agricultural exports from Alberta including pulse grains Consolidate shipments for smaller shippers to fill containers more for finished products for consumption Availability of containers in Alberta as the province is a net importer of containers at this time Container stuffing facility at or closer to west coast ports to minimize the extra trucking costs and time to move the transloaded products to the export container ships Ray-Mont Logistics expansion project announced at Prince Rupert for transloading unit train grain trains into containers on Ridley Island at the Port of Prince Rupert
The Calgary Region as a Distribution Hub
Market Overview Location Inventory (sq. ft.) Notes for Each Location Calgary Region 151,294,594 Calgary North East and Balzac Calgary South East Region Calgary South West Region 43,317,556 64,756,446 Virtually none 70% is Distribution and Warehousing and remainder is in manufacturing. Expected to be largest opportunity for new developments, taking 2-4 years to complete a number of already planned sites. This area includes Conrich (CN Intermodal Facility). Highest concentration of manufacturing, closely tied to oil and gas, and therefore, will be harder to fill. Close to the CP Intermodal Facility where there is still some available land. This region has virtually large scale warehousing but with the planned ring road expansion around the Tsuu T ina Nation, and the good location based on the highways, there is potential for some new developments.
