Agenda History Status existing solutions Challenges 2

Traceability Drivers in the Food Sector Olsen,

History The fishery and aquaculture industry expressed needs for traceability in the beginning of the last decade Traceability standards where developed Sector specific standards on the information to be recorded European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) standards for fish and farmed fish products (Often referred to as "The TraceFish standards"). These are now become an ISO standards. Standards for electronic exchange of traceability Implementation projects National Norwegian projects (Pelagic and white fish) EU projects 4

Traceability solutions in use Location of fishing is recorded in logbooks. (Pelagic fish reports location to the auction system) Landing contract system ensures that the fish is reported, regulated and therefore legally fished Catch Certificate (for EU export only) 5

Internal traceability solutions in use Electronic systems for internal traceability are used in industry 100% of the fish farming industry Pictures for AKVAgroup software Most fish processing/packaging companies Abstract of Catch certificate This document is an abstract of the catch certificate issued and validated electronically in 1 Document No and Issuer of Catch certificate Catch Certificate: NO Issued by Norges Sildesalgslag 2 Transport Name of exporter: YY Address of exporter: aa, bb Country of exportation: Norway Port / airport / other place of departure: MMolde Vessel name and flag: TransporterToNippon NO List of containers: ZCSU , ZCSU , JXLU ,','JXLU Exported product(s) Species FAO Product code EU CN code Product weight MAC NO ,00 MAC NO ,00 MAC NO ,00 Total weight ,00 4 Catch(es) Fishing vessel Registration number Catch area Name Kings Cross AA-1234-BB NO-0012 Liafjord AA-4321-BB NO-0123 Sæbjørn AA-4567-CC NO-1234 Sales note Landing date number NO NO NO

Chain traceability solution in use Electronic chain traceability systems Multiple systems are developed TraceTracker AS (Commercial system) esporing (Governmental initiated project) 7

Challenges Internal traceability The level of internal traceability documentation is variable and not well established for some companies Link between the "Contract note" and specific production batches has often ambiguous references 8

Challenges Chain traceability "The weak link in a chain" The incentive to implement electronic chain traceability is missing in some of the links. This makes a functional chain traceability systems in a supply chain difficult to establish National authorities and certification systems require traceability The reality is that the industry's traceability documentation often is incomplete. Without consequences Vessel NSS Producer/ Packer Flow of goods Norwegian Exporter Transporter Japanese Importer Chinese Processor Japanese Storage/ Producer Wholesaler Distribution center (supermarket chain) Retailer Flow of information International information exchange International information exchange 9

Summary The basic prerequisites are established Fishery management system Electronic traceability solutions Challenges Many landing/packing and exporting companies need to upgrade their traceability procedures to utilize the advantage - Investments to reengineer procedures and implement solutions. Requirements need to be defined International agreements need to be established 10
