17 International cooperation: a must GHG emissions, oil dependency, traffic congestion, passenger safety, transport security, : global challenges call for global solutions most future transport growth outside Europe: access to knowledge and markets becomes more important transport increasingly global, new competitors emerge, but also new opportunities for collaboration economic and social dynamics beyond Europe s borders call for closer links and greater cooperation global standards and interoperability of systems are more necessary than ever

20 Policy framework EU-Russia Cooperation in S&T forms a central element of EU- Russian Federation relations Policy background Common Space in Research & Education, including Cultural Matters Cooperation Agreements in S&T EU, pan-european and global programmes and initiatives (ITER, CERN, etc.) FP7 Russia continues to be the most successful, international cooperation partner country Some 391 Russian organisations are involved in 264 signed FP7 grant agreements, receiving over 45,6 M of EU funding (2011)

23 EUTRAIN Views and expectations an expert dialogue between European experts and their international counterparts should be established comparative between the situation in the EU and those in other regions (such as analysis of 3rd country research capabilities, investment, future priorities and potential for cooperation with the EU in the prospect of mutual interest) high interest for Eastern Europe neighbourhood, Mediterranean countries, US and Japan while all surface transport modes should be addressed, aeronautics and air transport can be left out this activity will contribute to the establishment of a strategy for EU international transport research cooperation
