Preventing migration Nina Happonen, BCF Food Packaging Summit - Managing the Migration Myth 1
Fibre based packaging is safe choice Filling and delivering packages safely 4 5 Durable cartons and safe products for consumers Product safety starts with traceable raw materials e.g. fibres, chemicals, packaging materials 1 Boards designed for for food contact 2 3 Fit for purpose packaging using materials suitable for food contact e.g. printing inks, adhesives 2
Two different perspectives on migration Direct migration PRIMARY PACKAGING Traces of mineral oils in foodstuffs resulting from direct contact with paperboards based on recycled fibres. The big issue Indirect migration SECONDARY PACKAGING Contamination from sources other than primary packaging. A minor issue Food itself may contain mineral oils. 3
Not just the cartonboard OIL SEEDS RAW MATERIALS FINAL PRODUCT PRIMARY PACKAGING Polyolefins from plastics FATS AND OILS FLAVOURS AND ADDITIVES SUGARS FRUITS AND BERRIES SECONDARY PACKAGING Polyolefins and mineral oils from adhesives Mineral oil from recycled fibre Mineral oil from printing inks GRAIN PRODUCTS COCOA BEANS INTENTIONAL Additives Release agents Waxes Antidusting agents UNINTENTIONAL Lubricants Migration from packaging Environmental contamination TRANSPORTATION PACKAGING Polyolefins and mineral oils from adhesives Mineral oil from recycled fibre Mineral oil from printing inks 4
Wrong conclusions may lead to false alarms FOR EXAMPLE: ADVENT CALENDARS Calendars from fresh fibre paperboard No mineral oil Natural extractives from wood Some glycerol* in printed board Plastics** in calendars Varying amounts of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons Secondary packaging Mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons No indirect migration into primary packaging 5 *) Softener in packaging glues **) In wrappings and trays: PE and PP
mg/kg board, up to C35 Different methods give different results Laboratories are using different methods and have difficulty in interpreting the results Forest industry s long knowhow in wood and paper making chemistry should be utilised to full Results between laboratories vary typically 50 60%. 6
There s no shared understanding of analytics Testing with food simulants gives worst case results Identifying migrating substances and their sources is extremely challenging Not all analysed MOAH is harmful Up to 50% other compounds Lifecycles of test samples need to be known Testing with real food samples gives true results. 7
Fresh fibre boards don t need unnecessary barriers Sustainability Barriers complicate recyclability Material reduction targets Functionality of barrier materials Airtight packages may increase dry food deterioration Cost Investment needed in the whole value chain Development of new packaging solutions Waste fees Cost to consumers 8
We are determined to serve customers Product safety legislation should always be developed at EU level, not country by country. European legislation must support both product safety and sustainability throughout the packaging value chain. We are determined to provide solutions in line with product safety legislation now and into the future. The best solutions arise from an exchange of ideas. 9
Utilise the most reliable cartonboards Choose cartonboards that are safe for food packaging. Print with low migration or mineral oil free inks. Pay attention to all packaging components, not just the cartonboard. Make good use of the best possible design. 10
Pure efficiency. True results. 11
