14 Sustainable manufacturing - Laser applications Laser is often a key technology for a sustainable manufacturing. As the hot stamped parts are very strong, conventional trimming operations cause excessive tool wear or premature tool failure, increasing production costs. Laser cutting is an efficient and flexible tool for the hot stamped trimming. This application is a typical mass production manufacturing process, well characterized by high volume, high quality. Laser machines usually work for 24/7. The flexible use of the machine is a plus. Since the hot stamped race started, the laser tool represents: Efficiency Reliability Flexibility 11

20 Conclusions In the sector of laser material processing, R&D is the main business strategy. The sustainability is the future for the European manufacturing. Additive Manufacturing is the most powerful laser technology in terms of technology growth and business. Today additive is not a new process but its productivity, quality, automation and reliability should be increased to become an industrial process. 18
