3 Railways are Transport of the Future!!! Why? Green! Transport accounts for 25% of EU C02 emissions, yet electrified trains can emit zero C02 Fast! High speed trains compete with air planes on short haul Efficient! Trains operate to time, even within congested cities. Each train can carry the freight of several hundred Trucks!

4 A Future Supported by: Government Policies: Increasingly Governments are recognising the benefits from Rail in terms of congestion, environment and high speed rail for economic development. European Transport Policy: The Transport White Paper, Railway Package directives, Pan European Corridors, Transport Research Policy! 6 Stakeholder Platforms Strategic stakeholder platforms of major relevance for the railway sector: ERRAC, EIRAC These platforms will continue their work to support the European Commission in defining research activities and topics for the calls in FP7. ERRAC has formulated Strategic Research Agenda (SRRA) towards The challenge is now to set up a vision and an implementation plan on rail towards 2050

10 Key rail-research projects MODTRAIN (FP6) Adopting a modular approach to define common interfaces for technical systems in high speed passenger trains and locomotives to improve modularity, interoperability and to reduce total life-cycle costs - currently used in the construction of high speed trains and locomotives First time all manufacturers and major railway operators worked together on a research project of this scale - 36 partners involved incl Universitat Politènica de Catalunya EC Funding: 16.9 M

11 Key rail-research projects TRIOTRAIN (FP7) Cluster of 3 projects on key railway interoperability issues take one step further by considering the possibility of virtual certification thus simplifying the homologation process that leads to reduction of time and costs PANTOTRAIN (Pantograph and catenary interaction total regulatory acceptance for the interoperable network) AEROTRAIN (Aerodynamics) DYNOTRAIN (Railway vehicle dynamics and track interactions) EC funding: 7.86 M (ES Participants ADIF, CAF, RENFE, CEIT, TIF-SA)
