5 Port of NY & NJ Inland Transport Trucks are the principal mode for the Port s local and regional cargo, handling nearly 85% of all containers due to the extremely large local market. Railroads are the principal mode especially to/from points around 400 miles away, handling about 14% of all containers. Barge or feeder ships currently play a limited role in container transport but should grow in the future.
