1 Press release 2016 financial year: goods moved by inland waterway and rail 3.06 M t; container traffic 130,205 TEU The EU funding emphasises the importance of bayernhafen Regensburg as a logistics hub in Europe Regensburg, 14 March 2017 In bayernhafen Regensburg (which, along with Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth and Passau, make up the six bayernhafen Gruppe port locations) a total of 3.06 million tonnes of goods were moved by the more environmentally friendly transportation modes of inland waterway and rail in 2016 (2015: 3.6 M t). Container traffic grew by 3.3% (2016: 130,205 TEU). Around 1 million was invested in bayernhafen Regensburg. The container throughput in bayernhafen Regensburg remained at a high level: 130,205 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) were handled in 2016 by the container terminal. This high throughput volume means that the terminal, which is operated by CTR Container Terminal Regensburg GmbH, has achieved its maximum capacity. After the extension work on the terminal is completed, the handling capacity will increase to 200,000 TEU p.a. Seven times a week, a container train links bayernhafen Regensburg to the German North Sea ports of Hamburg and Bremerhaven. Road takes care of regional distribution but the lion s share of transport takes place by rail. In addition to containers, mineral oil and cement was transported by rail, along with entire trucks via the so-called rolling road (RoLa). The discontinuation of the Regensburg-Trento rolling road service at the end of June 2016 was a key cause of the 13.8% decline in rail tonnage to 1.71 M t. In the past year, 1.35 million tonnes were handled by inland waterway, 18.1% down on The reduction in the handling volume at bayernhafen Regensburg, which is the largest port in Bavaria in terms of goods transported by inland waterway, can be attributed to a number of factors. One of these factors was the decline in mineral oil and coal transports by river barge. Water level-related issues resulted in less lightering than in the previous year, with a subsequent impact on several classes of cargo. The lion s share of cargo moved by inland waterway once again involved agricultural produce and human food and animal feed, with a combined total of 579,797 tonnes. Cereals are transported from Regensburg by river barge to the North Sea ports and from there to destinations around the globe. The river barge is also ideal for transporting high-value industrial goods such as plant and machinery. For example, finished transformers are loaded on to river barge in bayernhafen Regensburg to be shipped to markets around the world. With its handling facilities for large and heavy-lift freight, bayernhafen Regensburg plays an important role in securing the commitment of local industry to the area, says Dieter Haack, the Branch Manager of bayernhafen Regensburg. The extent of the modal shift is evident when, instead of focussing on the tonnage of cargo moved, we consider the transport performance of the individual modes of transportation in tonne kilometres. Data provided by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) showed that, in 2014, freight was transported in Germany an average of 309 kilometres by rail and 259 kilometres by barge. Road transport, which in particular handles the first and last mile legs, only transported freight an average of 94 kilometres. Last year, the average transport distance by inland waterway at bayernhafen Bamberg was 818 km. This amounts to around 1.1 million tonne kilometres for inland waterway at bayernhafen Regensburg. Each tonne transported long distance by inland waterway or rail takes pressure off the road Page 1 of 5
2 network and protects the environment. One of bayernhafen Gruppe s primary goals is to bring about a modal shift in long-distance freight transport. Key to achieving this goal are ports with excellent transport connections that enable intelligent interlinking of the three transport modes in the transport chain: road, rail and inland waterway. Investment 2016 and 2017 project preview In 2016, bayernhafen Gruppe invested around 8 million in its Regensburg location in particular in the regeneration and development of commercial sites and in its port infrastructure. By 2021, around 5 million will be invested in eliminating bottlenecks in the port s rail infrastructure, such as in extending rail track to accommodate block trains, expanding electrification and improving the flow of traffic at level crossings in the port. 1.1 million will come through funding grant awarded to bayernhafen Gruppe by the EU. bayernhafen Regensburg will receive funding through the EU financing instrument Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), based on the EU Commission s recommendations to the CEF Committee on selected projects. The EU funding emphasises the importance of bayernhafen Regensburg as a logistics hub in Europe, says Dieter Haack, the Branch Manager of bayernhafen Regensburg. Along with bayernhafen Nürnberg, bayernhafen Regensburg is one of two inland ports in Bavaria that the EU has defined as Core Network Ports of European importance, located as it is on one of the nine central transport routes in Europe, the Rhine- Danube Corridor. For 2017, bayernhafen Gruppe is kicking off an investment programme at the six bayernhafen locations of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau, with a total of around 30 million earmarked for measures running over a severalyear period to optimise rail and inland waterway infrastructure. A key aspect of the bayernhafen Gruppe business model is steering the availability of land through ongoing adaptation and regeneration. Through rental and leasehold contracts, as property owner, bayernhafen s strategy of continual site re-development ensures that available land is utilised in a prudent manner. In 2016, a number of companies based in bayernhafen Regensburg demonstrated their commitment to the location through investment: DTU Donau-Transport- und Umschlagsgesellschaft commenced operations at a storage depot for bulk cargo; Horst Pöppel Spedition constructed an 11,000 m 2 multi-user warehouse for foodstuff, and TraSt Logistics GmbH started construction of a further warehouse. As site architects, we provide the companies operating from bayernhafen Regensburg with the best possible conditions for growth and expansion, says Dieter Haack. This is equally of benefit not only to companies that have been here for decades but also to young start-ups that are finding a foothold on the market. We view ourselves as our customer s partner, entrepreneurial in both thought and deed. bayernhafen Regensburg as job magnet In a 2016 empirical study of the impact on regional employment of the six bayernhafen locations, bayernhafen Gruppe examined how many jobs were affected by one inland port. The study was based on guidelines jointly developed by the Federal Association of Public Inland Ports and the Institute for Transport Planning and Logistics of Hamburg University of Technology. The results show that more than 7,500 jobs in the region depend on bayernhafen Regensburg. Each of the approximately 1,800 jobs in bayernhafen Regensburg is matched by almost two jobs in companies in the region. Page 2 of 5

KG bayernhafen Regensburg is the hub for freight transport throughout East Bavaria and the market leader for inland shipping in the whole of Bavaria. The port makes a considerable contribution to serving citizens and businesses and provides producers in the region with access to international transport networks and markets. The port area covers 183 hectares, which is an area equivalent to around 250 football pitches. The port is home to 80 companies who provide around jobs. bayernhafen Gruppe comprises six locations: Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau. What makes its locations so outstanding is the combination of direct proximity to economically important geographical hubs and efficient linking of the transport routes of inland waterway, rail and road. In 2016, a total of million tonnes of goods were moved (3.02 million tonnes by inland waterway, 5.99 million tonnes by rail, million tonnes by road). bayernhafen Gruppe is an active facilitator in the development of logistics solutions and networks. It acts as a site architect that develops strategies spanning different companies and locations, invests in highperformance infrastructure, and cooperates closely with the companies settled in the ports to tap new potential for value creation. Its objective is to further strengthen the position of the ports as logistics hubs and as major platforms for the global exchange of goods. Strategic land management ensures a mix of industries from the transport, warehousing, logistics, service provision and production sectors. 800 hectares of total port area and more than 400 settled companies providing over 13,000 jobs also make bayernhafen Gruppe one of the best-performing logistics networks in Europe and one of the major drivers of the Bavarian economy. bayernhafen Gruppe itself has 210 employees. The operator of the locations of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Regensburg and Passau is Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG. The Chief Executive Officer is Joachim Zimmermann. The locations of Nuremberg and Roth are operated by Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH, with an 80% share held by Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG, a 19% share held by the City of Nuremberg and a 1% share held by the City of Roth. Page 4 of 5
