The transport modes need to share the load Regensburg, 15 February 2017 A total of 9 million tonnes of goods were moved by inland waterway and rail at the bayernhafen locations of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau, down 7.3% on the previous year saw bayernhafen Gruppe invest around 12 million in its locations in particular in the regeneration and development of commercial sites. In 2017, bayernhafen Gruppe is launching an investment programme totalling around 30 million over a several-year period to optimise its rail and inland waterway structure. Rail freight handling fell 4.55% on the previous year to 5.99 M t. This was mainly due to the discontinuation of the rolling road service between Regensburg and Trento at the end of June Container handling continued to develop positively at the bayernhafen locations of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg and Regensburg in 2016, showing another increase of 3.12% to a total of 459,794 TEU. Inland waterway handling fell 12.24% to 3.02 M t. The reduction in the handling volume can be attributed to a number of factors, one being the decrease in mineral oil and coal transports by river barge. In Regensburg, the largest Bavarian port in terms of cargo handling by inland waterway, water level-related issues resulted in less lightering than in the previous year, with a subsequent impact on several classes of cargo. A few years ago, bulk goods were generally transported by inland waterway, says Joachim Zimmermann, Chief Executive Officer of bayernhafen Gruppe. Today, such goods are increasingly being transported by rail. In 2016, for example, three million tonnes of iron ore were transported from the Lower Rhine region to Linz by rail, parallel to the Rhine, Main and Danube. This means rail capacity is being used for freight traffic that would be ideal for inland waterway rail capacity that is then not available for other time-critical traffic. It would instead be better for rail transport to concentrate on competing with road transport. What we need in the logistics sector is more holistic sharing of the load by the different modes of transportation. The extent of the modal shift is evident when, instead of focussing on the tonnage of cargo and freight moved, we consider the transport performance of the individual modes of transportation in tonne kilometres. Data provided by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) showed that, in 2014, freight was transported in Germany an average of 309 kilometres by rail and 259 kilometres by barge. Road transport, which in particular handles the first and last mile legs, only transported freight an average of 94 kilometres. Last year, the average transport distance by inland waterway at the bayernhafen locations was 694 km. It is, for example, a significantly greater distance from Regensburg to Rotterdam than from the Ruhr valley. Across the bayernhafen locations as a whole, inland waterway took around 2.1 billion tonne kilometres off the road networks. Achieving a modal shift requires efficient approval processes bayernhafen Gruppe is systematically pursuing its goal of shifting long-distance

2 freight transportation from the road networks to rail and inland waterway. This requires intelligent interlinking of the three transport modes road, rail and inland waterway at the bayernhafen locations. The last mile plays a key role in our ports, says Joachim Zimmermann, because, in order to shunt and assemble trains efficiently, ongoing track maintenance regularly requires adaptation and optimisation. Even more important are approval processes that enable us to be more flexible in adapting our port marshalling yards rather than make it more complicated. By 2021, around 5 million will be invested in removing bottlenecks in port rail infrastructure in bayernhafen Regensburg. 1.1 million will come through funding grant awarded to bayernhafen Gruppe by the EU. bayernhafen Regensburg will receive funding through the EU financing instrument Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The EU funding underlines the importance of bayernhafen Regensburg as a logistics hub in Europe. Along with bayernhafen Nürnberg, bayernhafen Regensburg is one of two inland ports in Bavaria that the EU has defined as Core Network Ports of European importance, located as it is on one of the nine central transport routes in Europe, the Rhine-Danube Corridor. In 2017, bayernhafen Gruppe is planning to launch an investment programme totalling around 30 million. bayernhafen Gruppe as job magnet In a 2016 empirical study of the impact on employment of the six bayernhafen locations of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau, bayernhafen Gruppe examined how many jobs were affected by one inland port. The study was based on guidelines jointly developed by the Federal Association of Public Inland Ports and the Institute for Transport Planning and Logistics of Hamburg University of Technology. The study showed that over 40,000 jobs directly or indirectly depend on the bayernhafen Gruppe locations. That is, each of the approximately 13,000 jobs in the ports is matched by more than two jobs in the regions connected to the bayernhafen corporate locations. Of the 13,000 jobs at the bayernhafen locations, 63% are skilled jobs, 18% are classified as specialised and expert jobs, and 19% are auxiliary jobs this structure is very similar to that of the entire Bavarian workforce. The port is an effective driver of employment, says Joachim Zimmermann. We make an important contribution to ensuring that industry and commerce remain committed to Bavaria, and create clusters and value chains. All this requires and stabilises jobs. Premiere in Europe: Cruise Ship Open Days bayernhafen Gruppe invested around 75,000 in the extension of the cruise ship pier in bayernhafen Bamberg. To celebrate the inauguration, the first ever Cruise Ship Open Days took place at the end of Over 2,500 enthusiastic visitors took a tour around the cruise ship Avalon Passion to gain an insight into this highly important tourism segment for Bamberg. In turn, the organisers had the opportunity to find out from the people of the city what was important to them. In 2016, 854 cruise ships docked at bayernhafen Bamberg.

The operator of the locations is Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG The locations of Nuremberg and Roth are operated by Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH, with an 80% stake held by Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG, a 19% stake held by the City of Nuremberg and a 1% stake held by the City of Roth. The Free State of Bavaria is the sole shareholder of Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG. Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG holds participating interests in the operating companies of the intermodal transport terminals, with a 74.9% stake in baymodal Bamberg GmbH in Bamberg and a 49% stake in TCA Trimodales Containerterminal Aschaffenburg GmbH in Aschaffenburg.
