New Business Models and Guidance for Sustainable City Logistics NOVELOG Project Dr. Alexander Stathacopoulos NOVELOG Project Office Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No
The NOVELOG Project (1/2) enabling of knowledge and understanding of urban freight distribution and service trips by providing guidance for implementing effective and sustainable policies and measures for sustainable city logistics. NOVELOG goes beyond the State-of-Art by employing a quadruple helix incorporating: 1. evaluation framework development and data collection 2. software tools supporting cities 3. demonstrators and case studies 4. guidelines for take-up 2
The NOVELOG Project (2/2) NOVELOG focuses on a holistic guidance approach NOVELOG aims to improve the UFT operation and maximize the impact generation in specific areas. Not a winning combination of measures Developing tools for managing the implementation chain Validation of results 6 pilots 6 case studies 3
NOVELOG 4 step Methodology Understand -ing Cities Toolkit Evaluation tool Guidance tool 4 Tools 4 Steps Understand Plan Assess Guide 4
NOVELOG paradigm shift Traditional Approach Pilots implementations Selection of measures by analogy Top down Municipal Decision making Different assessment methodologies Valley of death after the end of the funding NOVELOG Different Approach Measures implementation in the context of a clear strategy of the city for its SUMP/SULP Selection of measures in accordance to desired impact and city UFT characteristics Bottom up multi-stakeholders decision making Unique methodology allowing comparative evaluation Sustainable schemes of business cooperation for after project continuation and expansion 5
Multi-Stakeholder Platforms Freight partnerships set up by cities between the local (public) authorities and the private stakeholders. 4 main drivers: 1)Enhancement of understanding 2) Knowledge increase 3)Best practices exchange 4)Efficiency 6
Multi-Stakeholder Platforms in NOVELOG Understanding UFT Define the most significant Influencing Factors and Characteristics of UFT in a city Define the objectives and develop a strategy for achieving these Development of future scenarios for UFT Contribution to Pilot activities Collaborative Business Models 7
Understanding Cities Tool (UCT) objectives To provide a starting point for the various stakeholders to realise interrelations beyond their own environment and operational/ authority boundaries To identify key influencing factors of UFT demand & supply and their expected impact on the UFT characteristics, To serve as an ongoing platform at the city level, for building a common view among stakeholders on UFT 8
Description and purpose of the tool Experts Stakeholders Understanding Cities Tool outcome InFs = Influencing Factors CCs = City Characteristics UCT Line 1 Which are the factors influencing UFT (now and in the future)? How will my UFT look in the future? 1 UCT Line 2 If I want to influence a specific CC today and in the future, on which InFs should I focus? 2 9
