1 POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION: Equipment Mechanic I DATE: March 2018 INCUMBENT: DEPARTMENT: Public Works/Fleet REPORTS TO: Fleet Maintenance Supervisor POSITION PURPOSE: Contributes to the overall mission of the Engineering/Operations Division by repairing and maintaining all mechanical needs of department vehicles as directed and is on call for all other city vehicle repairs as needed and requested by other City department and division heads. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, materials and equipment of the Equipment Mechanic trade, principles of gasoline and diesel driven equipment and mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy truck and construction equipment. (Daily) 2. Good organizational skills to record parts and materials utilized, user comments, mileage, etc., in maintaining records pertaining to all aspects of maintenance including preventive maintenance. (Daily) 3. Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade involving working in contact with oils, solvents and other petroleum products. (Daily) 4. Physical condition to perform repairs in the field. (Weekly) 5. Knowledge of technologies incorporated into equipment and vehicles to operate computer diagnostic machine and other diagnostic tools. (As Required) 6. Able to perform manual labor, possibly for extended periods in adverse weather conditions. (As Required) 7. Able to respond to call back for emergencies during non-duty hours. (As Required) 8. Ability to legally operate a vehicle in Kansas and maintain a valid Commercial Drivers License. (Daily) 9. Mechanical aptitude and skilled in the care and use of hand and machine tools employed in automotive repair work, locating and repairing defects in automotive equipment. Pursue/run NATURE AND SCOPE: The Equipment Mechanic I reports directly to the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor Fleet, who reports to the Public Works Superintendent, who reports to the Director of Public Works, who reports to the City Manager, who reports to the City Commission. The Public Works Department encompasses three Divisions Administration, Engineering/Operations and Utilities. Administration includes the Director of Public Works, an Executive Secretary, an Administrative Secretary/Assistant, an Assistant Director/City Engineer, An Assistant Director/Utilities, and a Public Works Superintendent. Public Works Engineering/Operations Division includes Engineering, GIS, Streets, and Fleet Maintenance. Engineering Services includes Engineers, Engineering Aides, Engineering Project Coordinator, Engineering Technicians, Traffic Control and seasonal/temporary employees. GIS includes a GIS Coordinator and a GIS Technician. Public Works/Operations functions include Streets, and Fleet Maintenance. Streets include a Street Supervisor, Maintenance Crewleaders, Equipment Operators, Maintenance Technicians, an Administrative Assistant, and seasonal/temporary employees. Fleet Maintenance consists of a Maintenance Crewleader, Equipment Mechanics I, Equipment Mechanics II, and a Welder. Traffic Control consists of a Traffic Superintendent, Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor, Traffic Technicians, Maintenance Technicians, and seasonal/temporary employees. The Utilities Division includes Water Plant, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Water and Sewer distribution and collection systems, Electrician I & II, and Environmental. Water Plant includes a

4 Water Plant Superintendent, Plant Operators, Plant Mechanics, Maintenance Worker I and seasonal/temporary laborers. Wastewater Treatment Plant includes a Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent, Laboratory Specialists, Plant Operators, Plant Mechanics and seasonal/temporary laborers. Environmental Services includes an Environmental Compliance Manager, Water Program Technician, Environmental Specialists and a Biosolids Program Technician. Water/Sewer distribution and collection consists of a Utility Superintendent, Crewleaders, Maintenance Technicians, Equipment Operators, a Utilities Location Specialist, and temporary/seasonal employees. The Street Division is responsible for the maintenance of 155 miles of streets, alleys, the storm sewer network, snow and ice control operations, spring clean up, and equipment maintenance. The Equipment Mechanic I work under general supervision; receives work assignments and works independently to complete assigned work. Incumbent is authorized to determine repair requirements and purchase necessary parts and supplies. The incumbent performs all aspects of vehicle maintenance including preventative maintenance, minor repairs, or major overhauls of vehicles and equipment. The incumbent assists in ensuring a safe operation of the facility by maintaining a clean and neat work area. The incumbent prepares work orders and records user comments, mileage, vehicle number and lists all parts and supplies used to accomplish the repair. Performance can be measured in part by the quality of work, timeliness of repairs, returns for additional service, and the effective and efficient use of supplies and materials. Challenges and problems inherent in this position include the diversity of equipment and vehicles maintained, the number of individuals and departments being served, and requirement to be capable of operating equipment and vehicles being maintained. The incumbent is challenged to maintain knowledge of new technologies incorporated into equipment and vehicles. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: General duties and responsibilities assigned to the Equipment Mechanic: 1. Performs work assignments independently to assist in the maintenance and preventive maintenance, minor repairs or major overhauls of City vehicles and equipment to provide quality service with minimal returns for additional service, utilizing supplies and materials efficiently. 2. Prepares work orders and completes information pertaining to repairs including user comments, mileage, vehicle number, parts and supplies used to accomplish repairs. 3. Performs inspection of private refuse trucks to assure compliance with City ordinance for refuse hauling permit. 4. Makes modification to vehicles and equipment to meet the service needs of each City department. 5. Responds to call back for emergency situations during non-duty hours.

5 6. Maintains good records on all maintenance of parts and materials used. 7. Keeps up-to-date with regard to technologies used in equipment and vehicles including but not limited to computer diagnostic machine, brake and diagnostic systems. 8. Takes safety precautions to handle hazardous materials and dispose of appropriately, utilizing safety gear and special clothing. 9. Insures a safe operation of the operation of the facility by keeping work area safe, clean and neat. 10. Provides courteous service to a number of individuals and departments being served. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, materials and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade, principles of operations of gasoline and diesel driven equipment and of mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy truck and construction equipment. Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade. Skill is necessary in the care and use of hand and machine tools employed in automotive repair work, locating and repairing defects in automotive equipment. Ability to understand and follow quickly and accurately oral and written instructions. Mechanical aptitude and dexterity and good physical condition to meet the required labor demands. EDUCATION/TRAINING/EPERIENCE: High School graduate or possession of a GED, a minimum of two (2) years of automotive and equipment experience. Prefer certification by National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence in brake and diagnostic systems. Required Knowledge: Knowledge of computer diagnostic equipment. Skills/Abilities Ability to troubleshoot equipment failures. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions Ability to follow oral or written instructions. Ability to operate variety of equipment and vehicles.
