For stocks of this thickness you d normally litho print onto a thin substrate and laminate to the fluted medium. Using Abbey Corrugated s N Flute and F F flute (with Abbey Foil liner for the metallic finish) the project carton is a two-bottle carry-pack with crash-lock base, printed 4-colour process with opaque white and UV varnish seal. The bottle contents are a specially-brewed 4.5% AVB pale ale. The pack has been designed to demonstrate the highest precision cutting, embossing and converting sequences via the BobstVisioncut 106LE and Arden Dies Switch Pin system (ASP) embossing dies.

Many of these innovations spring from the Drivetronic SPC system, where the gearing mechanisms that control the timing sequence of the passage of the sheet through the conventional press have been replaced with electronically controlled systems. This allows the printing units to be taken out of sequence and, for example, all the plates to be changed at the same time, or wash-up function to be combined; it even allows plates on dormant units to be changed while the press is in print (FJC). Other developments that offer significant advantages to packaging printers are the SIS sidelay-free sheet infeed system, Plate Ident, which sets the ink ducts and registers the plate automatically (and ensures plates cannot be loaded in the wrong unit), QualiTronic and DensiTronic in-press systems for closed-loop assurance of content and colour values and intelligent pile logistics systems at both the feeder and the delivery. Of particular interest to printers in this sector is KBA VariDry a simple, economic and versatile system of universal slide-out, slide-in lamp units that can fit into the delivery swan neck or switch to interdeck locations as the job requires and VariDry Blue goes even further by recycling the heated air to give evergy savings of up to 50%. The coating unit can also be disengaged, so coating changes can be made while the press is running and our new unique anilox sleeve system makes this a one-man operation for the first time. During the early 1970 s Leyprint began producing packaging and today the Company is almost exclusively a printed folding carton manufacturer. The press, which was installed in early 2012, is configured with extended delivery and semi-automatic plate changing and runs both UV and conventional inks to allow easy switchover for a wider mix of jobs. KBA s CX package for handling a range of substrate thicknesses is also an important important factor; managing director Edward Mould explains: We need UV drying for our worldwide telecoms accounts but not always for other jobs. We also have to be able to run low migration inks and the ability to easily swap is very important. The CX element allows us to produce work for the high end flute market so we target a different type of work. The KBA press has been instrumental in Leyprint s drive into new markets with turnover doubling during the last two years. However, the board that the Carton Conference box is made from presented additional challenges requiring highly capable die-cutting and gluing equipment along with excellent tooling, glue application, adhesives and QA. At the BOBST UK & Ireland Competence Centre in Redditch, equipment, tooling and supplies from BOBST, Arden Dies, hhs & Sealock were utilised to deliver a perfect finish to the Carton Conference box. The BOBST VISIONCUT 106 LE delivers the precision and control needed to register, die-cut, emboss and strip virtually any type of board that carton makers are likely to use. In particular its dynamic register system means that the sides of the sheet never make contact with physical lays - something which ensures superb registration and no buckling of the sheet when processing litho-laminated materials. The system registers to a single print mark on the sheet while BOBST's EXPERTCUT and MASTERCUT die-cutter models offer full Power Register systems which register to two marks and mean no contact at all between sheet edges and lays. The double cam gripper bar advance of the VISIONCUT delivers the smoothest sheet acceleration and deceleration in its class with each movement of the gripper bar being perfectly controlled. This results in fewer nicks being needed, better quality of the final product and higher running speeds. Arden Dies supplied the die-cutter tooling for the Carton Conference box, which included Arden Switch Pin system (ASP) embossing dies. This unique system allows for the precise patching of the embossing die, ensuring superb emboss quality, while its design means that the die can be re-sited in the forme in perfect register when the job repeats. The Arden Dies cutting forme was pre-nicked to reduce make-ready time and also to ensure the consistency and accuracy of nicking, while the stripping tools were Quicklock-ready, ensuring fast and precise mounting into the die-cutter. The folding and gluing of the box was carried out on a BOBST EXPERTFOLD gluer, using hhs gluing and QA systems and Sealock adhesives. Designed to be highly productive and superbly versatile, EXPERTFOLD features BOBST's ACCUFEEDER blank aligner which ensures that each blank enters the machine in the correct orientation, so resulting in highly precise folding whatever the substrate. The crash-lock module of the EXPERTFOLD is flexible and time-saving, featuring telescopic upper conveyors which are easy to adjust to any box format, while the folding section delivers smooth, progressive folding. The hhs multi-point gluing system fitted to the machine produces consistent and accurate gluing, while the Sealock adhesives were optimised for the hhs system and the BOBST glue wheel.
