C-ITS interoperability and standardisation in logistics Germán Herrero (ATOS)
Road freight transport and ITS Road transportation is the maximum exponent of the transport sector, especially of the freight transport sector and a vast amount of ITS technologies are already available
Moving from single, siloed systems and organisations to an connected network of capabilities While todays transport services is linearly organized and optimized within the boundaries of organizational and system siloes C-ITS & Logistics of the future will fulfill individual user needs by a collaborative and agile network of capabilities
CO-GISTICS wants to combine Smart Logistics enhancements and Cooperative driving techniques to mutually reinforce the beneficial effect Intelligent Truck Parking Cargo Transport optimization CO2 emission estimation and monitoring Priority and Speed advice Eco-drive support
Interoperability & CO-GISTICS ETSI ITS Reference architecture as main input based on the physical architecture of the CO- GISTICS Services >> support of modular-based integration Facilities layer: Use of standardized messages and protocols in ITS >> i.e CAM, SPAT Access layer: Short range comm: ETSI ITS-G5 Long range comm: LTE 3g/4g & Ethernet networks

CO-GISTICS standardization contributions 5 CO-GISTICS use cases have been included in Technical Report Standards and actions necessary to enable urban infrastructure coordination to support Urban-ITS Intelligent Truck Parking and Delivery Areas Management (ITP/DAM) Priority and Speed Advice Service Priority and Speed Advice Service (Macro Approach) Eco-drive Support Service CO2 Footprint Monitoring and Estimation. A sixth Use Case from CO-GISTICS Cargo transport optimisation is considered as an instantiation of the Use Case UL-0101 Final Report: April Other related initiatives: ISO TC204 "Commercial Fleet Management" - "Green-ITS CEN TC278 activities. WG2 "Freight and Fleet Management Systems" & WG17 ETSI ITS WG1 "Application Requirements and Services"
CO-GISTICS Services Specification Information flow Description From->To 1. SA request The SA service installed in the starts interaction with the infrastructure. The service requests the speed recommendations for the near intersections and route. Data elements: - Vehicle_ID+Vehicle attributes (vehicle Speed position, Advisory path ) Speed Advice Driver assistance 2a. Vehicle position+path The RSU communication service requests the speed recommendations for the near intersections and route. Data elements: SA app -> SA service SA service -> Itinerary BO RSU/ - Vehicle_ID+Vehicle attributes (vehicle position, Infrastructure 2. TOPO+SPAT 1 path ) P/SA RSU collects Priority Advisory Data the manager information of the current status of the RSU -> RSU traffic lights, sensors and geographical information of the communications road side. Data elements: - TOPO message (intersection geometry ) Priority - SPAT message (traffic signal status, min/max residual / Driver assistance time ) 3. RSU Response The RSU communications sends the information to the RSU -> OB SA service Traffic Signal Route/Itinerary vehicle of the status and the timetochange. Data and Sensors assesment RSU status Config-info RSU elements: - Status - Timetochange CO-GISTICS RSU provides static/recent services information of brings road conditions together RSU -> TMC BO - ID-RSU + road attributes (status, speed recommendation ) different actors and systems representing This flow all is more parts static/recent of data oriented the and C-ITS the flow. The traffic management center manages and updates the RSU units. Data elements ID-RSU + RSU attributes config (status, speed recommendation ) TMC BO -> RSU / Infrastructure 7 different pilot sites, with different site-specific requirements and services Added a lot of complexity 5 different types of services: These services are diverse in terms of the involved physical components, business processes and information technology standards they employ. Thus, there cannot be a single business or technical architecture for the CO- GISTICS Ecosystem. Driver HMI update This flow is more static/recent data oriented and the flow. Standardization benefits Efficiency Collaboration Safety Information provided to the driver including visual SA service -> SA displays, audible information and warnings, and feedback. app The updates inform the driver about available delivery areas, route updates and the current status of vehicle onboard equipment Sustainability
Summary Interoperability is not restricted to technical aspects of a TMC or road transport operator >> it must be established on all levels of cooperation and collaboration of co-working organisations and their technical system CO-GISTICS services and pilots using ITS Standards have provided proof of concept that technology is maturing, reducing risks of a fragmented and non-interoperable system in the coming years Using standards at several layers (access, facilities, data models ) address interoperable issues and allow new services coming in the next years (C-ITS and automation) Challenge about C-ITS systems interoperability across borders with same service levels to gain full benefits for all drivers, including truck drivers More technical specifications on interaction between freight operators and ITS for specific use cases (urban ITS, intermodal Hubs ) At access layer, 5G will enable the next generation of connected and automated driving and new mobility services, inclunding freight mobility services in urban interurban areas
