3 DG vs GHS In the GHS, hazards are communicated to chemical users through a combination of symbols as well as words, in the form of signal words, hazard statements and precautionary statements. These are intended to appear on labels and in SDS. Dangerous goods markings and labels are aimed at preventing and mitigating incidents related to the transport of dangerous goods.

7 WHS labelling requirements Manufacturer or Importer must ensure hazardous chemicals are correctly labelled as per the GHS PCBU must ensure hazardous chemicals used, handled or stored at the workplace are correctly labelled as per the GHS Exceptions: Therapeutic goods Consumer products Cosmetics and toiletries Hazardous chemicals in transit (max 5 consecutive days) Recognition of relevant DG warning labels in place of pictograms

8 ADG Code labelling requirements All containers and packagings to be labelled Outer packages must be labelled as per ADG Code Recognition of GHS labelling for inner packages (pictograms) Some concessions for first trip Note: Outer packages used within the workplace must meet both ADG Code and GHS e.g. IBCs, drums, etc. In transit storage concessions apply to GHS labelling only

10 GHS Label back panel IF ON SKIN (or hair): Take off contaminated clothing and wash before re-use. Rinse skin using plenty of soap and water. If skin irritation occurs: Get medical advice/attention. IF SWALLOWED: Immediately call a POISON CENTRE or doctor/physician. Rinse mouth. In case of fire: Use powder for extinction. Keep away from sparks and open flames. No smoking. Keep container tightly closed. Ground/bond container and receiving equipment. Use explosion-proof electrical equipment. Use only non-sparking tools. Take precautionary measures against static discharge. Wear protective gloves and eye and face protection. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Store locked up in a well-ventilated place. Keep cool. 14 Potential issues for transport & logistics providers Confusion between DG Warning Labels and GHS Pictograms E.g. GHS classification for eye damage/irritant requires corrosive pictogram but product is not classified as Class 8 DG Renewed focus by regulators on existing requirements, e.g. Australian contact details Focus is on all hazardous chemicals, not just DG In transit storage, particularly for large containers, IBCs, ISOtainers, etc. Consignor lack of knowledge and compliance Ownership of issue by duty holders Legal implications of relabelling

15 Preparing for 1 January 2017 Train all of your workers Raise awareness of your customers and ensure transition plan for compliance / non-compliance Consider 3 strikes policy Liaise with customers re updating labels on stock in storage Consider legal implications of relabelling Verify current level of compliance with existing marking and labelling requirements the requirement to ensure chemicals are correctly marked and labelled is not new, many of the elements are still the same
