25 Wall construction: Models 2820 and 2822 This section provides wall construction requirements for 3M Intelligent Return Plus models. Before beginning new construction or changing an existing structure, contact 3M Library Systems Technical Service at (website: or your sales representative to: Confirm that you have the most recent version of this document. Verify that the proposed system can be installed in the planned space. Wall opening dimensions and materials The 2820/2822 system requires a wall opening 28 in. wide 27.5 in. high [711 mm wide 699 mm high]. The surround adds a 3 in. (76 mm) border around the opening. The system can be installed in walls with depths that range from 4 in. to 18 in. (102 mm to 457 mm). The wall opening requires framing material that will readily accept the surround anchoring screws. This material cannot be concrete, brick, or rock of any kind. 3M recommends 2 x 6 inch treated wood framing. 3M requires that the bottom of the wall opening be 33 in. (838 mm) from the floor on the staff side. If the staff and patron side surfaces are at the same elevation, this will place the shelf at a height of 36 in. (914 mm), which is an ADA recommendation. If the elevation differs, contact your 3M sales representative or 3M technical support to discuss options. 2 x 6 in. treated wood frame recommended 31 in. [787 mm] 27.5 in. [699 mm] 33 in. [838 mm] from opening to staff side floor 30.5 in. [775 mm] 28 in. [711 mm] (Reference Only 3M technician installs) Note: The system requires an opening that complies exactly with the dimensions listed in the figure. If you plan to finish the opening, the rough opening must be large enough to accommodate the finished materials and still maintain these dimensions wall dimensions 25

26 Side elevation 1524 mm 60in [838 mm] 33 in [1219 mm] 48 in [914 mm] 36 in 2820_2822_V2_side elevation Note: Outdoor surface (patron side) is the same elevation as interior (staff side). Wall thickness and weight bearing capacity The system can be installed in walls that are between 4 in. to 18. in [102 to 457 mm] thick. The wall should be strong enough to bear the weight of the 3M Intelligent Return, which means it should be able to handle the additional 225 lb. [102 kg] when the system is placed on it. 26

27 Minimum distance to walls 3M recommends the following: A minimum of 18 in. [457 mm] between the induction unit and the wall or other obstruction. When this isn't possible, contact 3M Technical Service. Sufficient space between sorters and the wall or other obstructions to allow the staff to place and move bins. 18 in [457 mm] Recommended Intelligent Return 18 in [457 mm] Recommended 28XX_distance_to_walls 27

28 Minimum distances between RFID systems This section lists minimum distances required between 3M RFID systems in order to avoid RF interference.
