Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Carton Requirements Weight and Dimensions: With the exception of single selling units that exceed these measurements, all cartons are required to be within these parameters: Carton Weight: Maximum of 50 lbs (equal to 22.7 kilograms) Minimum of 3lbs Any cartons greater than 50lbs must adhere to the following additional packaging requirements. Cartons must have a yellow TEAM LIFT 4 x 6 label The team lift label should be placed on the four largest sides of the carton including to the left of the GS1-128 label Carton Dimensions: Maximum: 36 Long x 26 Wide x 26 High 92 cm Long x 66 cm Wide x 66 cm High Minimum: 10 Long x 9 Wide x 3 High 26 cm Long x 23 cm Wide x 8 cm High See pages 5-6 for special note on 3 height requirement. 4

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Kohl's 3" Carton Height Reminder Cartons under 3" are not conveyable thru the DC buildings. Please review picture examples as you prepare your Kohl s retail shipments. Please contact the Vendor Services (Vendor.Services@kohls.com) or your Buying team before shipping out any cartons that do not meet Kohl's minimum dimensions requirement. The space between the conveyors and the side rails is 3". When cartons are not 3" high, they can slip under the side rails. Cartons that are less than 3" are often damaged when they fall off the conveyor or get wedged up against the rails. 5

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Kohl's 3" Carton Height Reminder Continued When stuck they often back up the conveyors, damaging other cartons that get affected by the jam. These items are often unsaleable. Cartons that are less than 3" and caught before hitting the conveyors, must be stacked and manually worked thru the DCs. This process can add several days or more onto how long the cartons take to process thru the buildings. 6

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Ship Ready: Vendors shipping both store and E-commerce POs must follow the below Ship Ready guidelines for those POs: Any carton exceeding the maximum carton dimensions or with one selling unit is deemed Ship Ready and must be packaged in a reshippable carton Reshippable packaging is defined as: A sealed carton containing one selling unit A UPC Gum label near the GS1-128 label Able to ship via a small parcel carrier without damage to the product Strength Requirements: Vendors are responsible for utilizing cartons strong enough to withstand the rigors of transportation and supply chain processing. Cartons can be stronger than what is required. It is recommended, but not required, that cartons be labeled with their ECT and/or Bursting Strength certification. Furniture Strength Requirements: Vendors should work with Kohl s Furniture Product Development team to ensure packaging meets current standards. UPS. (2012). Package with Care A Guide to Packing Your Shipments.[Brochure]. UPS. 7

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements General Carton Requirements: Pack shipments to the same level of detail as the purchase order is written. If Vendors have a packaging alternative to corrugate, contact floorready@kohls.com for approval. Cartons can be new or repurposed. Any additional bar codes or print on repurposed cartons must be covered or disabled so they do not interfere with the scanning of the GS1-128 label or other DC processing activities. All cartons must adequately protect product during transit and DC processing Seal cartons with reinforced security tape that is moisture and temperature resistant Do not seal cartons with bands, straps, staples, twine, glue or any closure material other than tape. However, it is approved to use plastic strapping to seal gaylords and CDUs. Use the correct size carton for the merchandise; do not over- or under-pack cartons Cartons must be wide enough to allow items to fit squarely in the carton If packing small items, consider master packing in order to use larger cartons (Page 13-14) When applicable, cartons should be marked in BOLD lettering, Fragile, Do Not Freeze, Melt Risk, etc. (i.e. glassware, cosmetics, candles) 8

Pack Type Definitions The below image packaging best practices by PO Pack Type. Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Bulk (B) Pack Type: Pack one UPC/SKU (one style, color, size combination) per carton Mixed SKU cartons are prohibited on bulk shipments Direct import orders must follow inner pack/outer pack instructions transmitted on the PO EDI Prepack (M) Pack Type: Prepack definition = pre-determined ratio of multiple UPCs/SKUs set by the buyer and transmitted on the EDI purchase order The EDI purchase order directs the number of prepacks to pack in each carton The EDI purchase order carries prepack level data and line item data Packing information for private brands via Li & Fung is on the objective sheet or PLX information Pack-by-Store ( PBS ) Pack Type: Units are assigned to a particular store Multiple UPCs/SKUs may be packed in the same carton Total units per carton may vary per store needs PBS does not apply to Kohl s Direct Imports/Private Brands 9

Hardline Drop Test Requirements Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Kohl s expects vendors of breakable/hardline product to perform drop testing using the following guideline as a minimum standard. Test results should be kept on file by the vendor and Kohl s reserves the right to request the documentation in the event a quality issue is detected. Selection of shipping cartons for drop test: Shipping cartons are randomly selected from bulk production for drop test. Total shipping cartons Shipping cartons for drop test 1-7 Not required For All Hardline Items (except glassware, ceramicware): Shipping carton drop height is determined according to shipping carton weight: Carton weight Drop height 0 < 21 lbs 30" (76 cm) 21 < 41 lbs 24" (60 cm) 41 < 61 lbs 18" (45 cm) 61 < 100 lbs 12" (30 cm) For Ceramicware: Carton weight Drop height - 18" (45 cm) For glassware: Carton weight Drop height - 12" (30 cm) Evaluation: Dropped cartons must be opened for inspection, to identify damaged or defective product related to the drop test. Defect Classification List are located on Private brands > Quality Assurance > Defect Classification Lists The percentage of defective units cannot exceed 2.5%, based upon Kohl's OQL (outgoing quality level). If it does exceed, the drop test failed and must be reviewed & corrected prior to shipping. 10

Hangers Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Use: Use 584 sweater hangers in place of 484 top hangers when needed to prevent hanger marks or garment shoulder slippage Only Kohls approved paper loops are an acceptable means to bind / secure hangers together where necessary some examples of unacceptable means to bind / secure hangers together are rubber bands, tape and plastic twist ties, or any means that ties the hangers together please contact vendor.services@kohls.com Apply Kohl s designated program hangers Hangers may be anchored to the internal sides of the carton when needed to prevent garments from shifting in transit When using carton liners, hanger hooks do not need to be exposed When using poly bags, hanger hooks need to be exposed Sets: Two-Piece Sets: Insert bottoms hanger through the off-set loop on the tops hanger Apply crown sizer to the top hanger only Three-Piece Sets: Follow the above two-piece directive Attach third garment hanger to the two-piece set using connector 9916N Apply crown sizer to the top hanger only 11

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Hanger Carton Packing: Lay garments head to toe in the carton, alternating the direction of the garments as needed There should be no more than one horizontal fold per garment when packed Fold as close to the bottom of the garment as possible Vertical folding is acceptable if necessary to accommodate the garment width Fold as close to side seams as possible Do not place garment into the carton in a wrinkled manner, as the wrinkles will become permanent in transit Follow Kohl s carton dimensions guidelines as stated on p. 2 of this section The carton should be only 1 to 1 ½ wider than the size of the hanger Hangers must fit squarely in the cartons (not at an angle) Adjust your carton length and height according to the size of the pack Cardboard Bridge: A cardboard bridge may be used in the carton to remove some of the pressure on garments in the bottom half of the carton. Use a bridge in carton packing for special fabrications that may become very wrinkled or crushed from the excess weight and pressure of other garments Recommended for cartons with 12 or more pieces of special fabrications. (silks, moleskin, velvets, etc) The cardboard used can be of a single corrugated quality. Ends of the bridge are left open so there should be no need for a larger length in the outer carton, and no more than ¼ to ½ inch wider in width. Please note that hangers should still be put in the garments. 12

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Polybag Requirements Definition: A poly bag is a poly material that is used as a bag to protect individual hanging and folded garments. The use of poly bags is not required; they should only be used if needed to ensure product arrives to Kohl s in saleable condition. A child safety warning is required on all poly bags 9 x 12 or larger o Recommended Verbiage: "Warning: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages or playpens. The plastic bag could block nose and mouth and prevent breathing. This bag is not a toy." Material: Clear polyethylene material (PE) with no BHT Thickness: to inches or 0.019mm to 0.032mm Recyclable material All poly bags must be perforated for ease of removal Vendors may use poly bag supplier of their choice Use: Individual poly bagging must be approved by FloorReady@kohls.com One large poly bag may be used to protect all hanging and folded garments packed within one carton A poly bag is the preferred method for packing inner pack quantities transmitted on Import Bulk orders and Inner Prepack orders Poly bags must be 6 to 12 inches longer than the garment(s) The large poly bag may be used in place of a carton liner A single piece of tape or heat seal may be used; however, sealing is not required 13

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Polybag Exceptions Sweaters: may use single poly bag for heavily embellished, high loft chenille or cashmere sweaters Embellished Knit Tops: may use single poly bag and tissue Delicate Fabrics: may use single poly bag, tissue and cardboard bridge to minimize wrinkles in sateen, micro fiber, chenille, velvet, leather or suede garments Intimates: may use single poly bags. If sent in polybags, intimates do not require perforated polybags Diagrams: Perforations must follow these examples Figure 1: Garment Bag for Bottoms Figure 2: Garment Bag for Tops, Coats or Dresses 14

Carton Liner Requirements Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements The following requirements must be followed when preparing shipments to Kohl s that are standard Bulk purchase orders with inner quantities of one (1) These requirements are to be followed when the vendor is given a standard Import, Landed, or Domestic Bulk purchase order Definition A carton liner is a poly material that lines the entire inside of the carton before garments are packed inside. Carton liners are used to provide additional protection for the garments while eliminating the need for individual poly bags Material: Clear polyethylene material (PE) with no BHT Thickness: to inches or 0.019mm to 0.032mm Recyclable material Vendors may use carton liner supplier of their choice A child safety warning is required on all poly bags 9 x 12 or larger o Recommended Verbiage: "Warning: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages or playpens. The plastic bag could block nose and mouth and prevent breathing. This bag is not a toy." Use Use one (1) carton liner for the entire quantity of each carton Pack hanging garments head to toe in flat carton 15

Carton Liner Illustrations: Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Carton liner inside carton prior to packing order Carton liner with garment inside with hanger on the left side Carton liner with garment inside with hanger on right side Carton liner sealed after packing garments prior to closing carton 16

Protective Packaging Guidelines Acceptable: Paper loops to secure hangers Bubble wrap Corrugated cardboard wrap Cardboard dividers Dunnage or paper stuffing for books Plastic strapping on gaylords and CDU s Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Unacceptable: Using tape or rubber bands on hangers Tying hangers together Tissue (unless directed by buyer or product manager) Pins, plastic clips, or tie backs (unless directed by buyer or product manager Packing peanuts Shredded paper Strapping an outer cartons Inserting anything between a garment and a pinch clip hanger (i.e. cardboard, fabric, etc) 17

Specialty Packaging Guidelines Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Beauty Packaging: Carton strength needs to withstand the transportation process while maintaining its shape. If the individual carton does not meet Kohl's minimum dimensions, other options should be considered (ex. PBS, Bulk). Internal components need to be sealed properly to avoid leakage or damage in transit. 18

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Candles Packaging: Contents of carton must be packed in a way that prevents breakage while being processed through the DCs and onto stores. 19

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Decor Packaging (Indoor and Outdoor): Contents of carton must be packed in a way that prevents breakage while being processed throughout the DCs and onto stores. If cartons are to be split at the DCs, they must be small enough to fit in a tote, and protected in their own packaging. Frequently a problem for lawn ornaments, wall décor, small furniture, other non-boxed décor items. Luggage Packing (For Nested Luggage): Nested luggage orders must include outer carton labeling that states: This is a nested luggage set. Remove inner units before placing on sales floor. Verbiage can be placed via a carton label or direct printing on the carton. o Label size should be 8.5 x11 on brightly colored paper where possible. 20

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Shoe Packing: Pack shoes with the label end facing the top of the carton All boxes must face the same direction If packing an empty shoebox to fill space, write EMPTY on the shoebox in large print Apply suppressed retail price tickets to the same end of the shoebox as the preprinted barcode Soft Home Packaging: Example product: bedding, pillows, pet beds Carton strength needs to withstand the transportation process while maintaining its shape. If the carton is overstuffed, or corrugate is too weak, sides will bulge making them nonconveyable. 21

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements Table Top Packaging: Contents of carton must be packed in a way that prevents breakage while being processed through the DCs and onto stores. If cartons are to be split at the DCs, internal pieces need to be packaged to protect them when placed in totes with other items. 22

Store Packaging and Shipping Requirements GS1-128 Carton Labeling All cartons being shipped to Kohl s stores or distribution centers must have compliant Kohl s GS1-128 carton labels For import orders, please refer to Appendix SP-11 for Private Brand and Direct Import GS1-128 Requirements located on Logistics & Routing > Appendices > Shipment Packing GS1 US Definition (Formerly the Uniform Code Council) GS1 is the global standards authority for item (UPC and EAN) and logistical numbering. In addition to managing the numbering assignments, GS1 provides the retail industry guidelines for supply chain identification. Every country has a regional organization and GS1 US is the non-profit organization in the United States. Kohl s requires that all vendors review and follow carton label formats and barcode data requirements in accordance with the guidelines posted on the GS1 US website (listed below). Kohl s does not receive at Master Carton level or Pallet level. GS1-128 barcode must be at the individual carton level. Only apply one GS1-128 label per carton. Only one SSCC- 18 barcode is allowed per carton. For detailed information regarding GS1 identification, please contact use the following contact: GS1 US Tel: Fax: GS1-128 Barcode Testing Bar Code Graphics, Inc. is the Kohl s barcode testing center for GS1-128 labels All domestic ship points must be tested for each Kohl s pack type format, including vendors already shipping to Kohl s Labels for each pack type (Bulk, Prepack, Pack by Store) that the vendor currently ships to Kohl s must be tested New Kohl s vendors must have GS1-128 labels for each ship point tested and certified within 90 days of receiving their first Kohl s PO Contact Bar Code Graphics, Inc. at test@barcode-us.com or (800) ext. 511 for label testing information 23

Label Placement General Guidelines: Each carton is required to have one GS1-128 label Place only one GS1-128 label on a carton Store Ready Shipping and Packing Requirements If carton contents and address are included as part of the GS1-128 label in a human readable format, an additional label for this purpose is not required GS1-128 Labels must be placed: On the second largest side. The largest side will be facing down on our conveyors. Therefore, labels must be placed on the second largest side. In the lower right quadrant These placement guidelines are required even if the second largest side of the carton has the box seam as long as the GS1-128 barcode does not cross the seam of the box (see examples below). If there is stenciling on the cartons, leave the lower right hand quadrant of the second largest side of the carton vacant for the GS1-128 label GS1-128 Labels must be Placed in an upright position Barcode must be read vertically Do not place sideways or diagonally The SSCC-18 bar code on the carton label must be 3.0 inches from either vertical edge of the carton no less than 1.25 inches up from the bottom horizontal edge Do not place SSCC-18 bar code over a flap seam or around the corners of a carton The human readable SSCC number that is printed above the bar code must be printed in a bold font, no smaller than 12 pt Do not place tape over any bar code For merchandise selling in the same carton as shipping Do not place labels over product ID Numbers UPC Bar Codes & retail price 30 Kohl s Department Stores 10/15/17

Store Ready Shipping and Packing Requirements other consumer information on merchandise Vendors are responsible for GS1-128 labels being intact upon shipment arrival in scannable condition upon shipment arrival Be sure to use the correct combination of paper, ink and adhesive Cartons containing liquid product: Cartons containing liquids must be oriented with the container opening(s) facing up to prevent spilling. Then, GS1-128 label should be placed in the lower right corner of the longest side of the carton based on this orientation. Cartons should also be stenciled with This side up arrows. For questions regarding label placement for cartons that do not meet Kohl s dimension requirements or for sensitive or fragile product that requires specific carton positioning, please contact FloorReady@kohls.com **** NOTE GS1-128 Placement for Ecommerce is different! **** Please review Ecommerce Packaging Guidelines VICS standard placement on cartons 7.5 inches in height and above: Side with largest surface area (LxWxH) Side with second largest surface area (LxWxH) Side with smallest surface area (LxWxH) SSCC-18 Bar Code must cover this band and label must always be in bottom right. 31 Kohl s Department Stores 10/15/17

Store Ready Shipping and Packing Requirements Label Placement: Cartons 7.5 or 19cm in Height or Less Placement of label folded over from the side to the top of the carton One GS1-128 label per carton 3 inches from Vertical edge No less than 1.25 inches from the bottom edge of carton The SSCC-18 barcode on a carton label must not be: folded around the edges or corners of the carton wrinkled wrapped around the edges or corners of the carton The part of the label that contains the SSCC-18 bar code must be visible on the side of the carton as pictured below. The remainder of the label is applied to the top of the carton. Note: The label can be applied over stencil marks if needed. Largest side Second largest side Smallest side 2.5 Inches 1.25 Inches 3 Inches 32 Kohl s Department Stores 10/15/17

Store Ready Shipping and Packing Requirements Label Placement: Cartons in which height is greater than width or length Carton should be orientated with the largest surface being placed down resulting in the height becoming the width or length (examples below) Base label placement on this orientation regardless of which side has the seam Note: if the seam is on the second largest side, wrap the label over the top and side with the barcode visible to avoid covering the seam Placement example when there is enough space to apply the label below the seam without having to cover the seam: Largest side Second largest side Smallest side Placement example when there is enough space to apply the label below the seam without having the SSCC-18 barcode cover the seam: Largest side Smallest side Second largest side 2.5 Inches 1.25 Inches 3 Inches 33 Kohl s Department Stores 10/15/17

Store Ready Shipping and Packing Requirements Placement example when there is NOT enough space to apply the label below the seam without having to cover the seam with the label: Largest side Smallest side Second largest side 3 Inches 1.25 Inches Top Placement Vendors who are authorized to ship in cartons that are less than 3 in height may place the GS1-128 label on the top of the carton. The label must be placed consistently in one corner on the top of the carton. The SSCC-18 barcode should be positioned so that it is not across a seam or around any corner or edge of the carton. 34 Kohl s Department Stores 10/15/17

Shipping and Receiving Documents Store Ready Shipping and Packing Requirements Advance Shipment Notifications Kohl s operating policy is to pre-receive 100% of all shipments. The processing of shipment information prior to the physical arrival of goods improves the flow of product to the selling floors Our requirements are as follows: 1. All shipments to Kohl s must have an EDI Advance Shipment Notification (ASN) and GS1-128/SSCC-18 scannable bar codes on each carton. 2. Usable* EDI ASN s must be sent immediately on or before the release of the shipment to the carrier. ASN s must be received in Kohl s System by 6:00AM CST on the day after the shipment is released to the carrier. 3. All merchandise shipped to Kohl s under a given Bill of Lading must be combined onto a single EDI ASN 4. For truckload shipments, EDI ASN s must have trailer integrity. Shipments utilizing more than one trailer must have an EDI ASN for each trailer detailing only the items on that trailer 5. Upon receipt of an ASN, Kohl s transmits a Functional Acknowledgement (EDI 997). Receiving an acknowledgement does not necessarily mean the ASN was usable. Kohl s will notify the vendor via an of an EDI ASN rejection. The vendor will need to correct the ASN. 6. EDI ASN production is determined by our EDI MIO Department. 7. Should EDI ASN s not be received for a shipment or are deemed unusable, Kohl s will require the vendor to prepare and deliver traditional Packing Lists to Kohl s in an expedited manner. (Refer to Appendix SR-1 Packing List Requirements) These Packing Lists will be, at Kohl s discretion, either faxed or delivered via an appropriate overnight service to the Central Order Control Office. If faxing, make note of the separate fax numbers for each distribution center. 44 Kohl s Department Stores 10/15/17

Vendor System Changes Store Ready Shipping and Packing Requirements Kohl s requires that when vendors are planning major system upgrades that could impact the transmitting accuracy of EDI ASN s, the vendor inform the EDIMIO Department prior to implementing the changes. If the changes cause a disruption of the normal EDI ASN service, Kohl s expects the vendor to communicate this to the EDIMIO Department Prior to the next EDI ASN transmission and to convert back to paper packing list requirements until the system issues are resolved. Please our EDI Department at edimio@kohls.com of the changes and cc: vendor.compliance@kohls.com Close Proximity Vendors Vendors within an 8-hour travel zone of a distribution center must send an EDI ASN transmission immediately on or before the release of the shipment.
