European Workshop: Facilitating Automated Driving and ITS TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE ITS FOR ROAD TRANSPORT AUTOMATION September, 2016

01 INTRODUCTION Technologies To Enhance ITS for Road Transport Automation Cooperative Systems Cloud Computing New Technologies CyberSecurity Big Data & Analytics Connected & Automated Vehicle 2

02 TECHNOLOGIES Technologies To Enhance ITS for Road Transport Automation Cloud Computing Cloud-computing can allow traffic management center operations to manage the vast amounts of data collected from ITS equipment deploy in roads, floating car data, crowd-sourced traffic data, etc. Based on the collected data, new services can be offered and new data can be generated for traffic operations Cloud-based services can bring important benefits reducing the infrastructure costs whereas improving the safety of road users 3

02 TECHNOLOGIES Technologies To Enhance ITS for Road Transport Automation Big Data & Analytics Mobility and logistics stakeholders are already adopting technology and massively storing data but Big Data solutions are not adopted by the sector However, despite the potential, Big Data solutions are not an important part of the traffic control operation yet Big data applied to transport can produce a safer mobility in the EU (source: ITF), contributing to reduce deaths in the transport sector ( people die every year in the EU in traffic accidents). Big Data will have a profound economic and societal impact in the mobility sector, which is one of the most-used industries in the world. It is expected to lead to 500 billion USD in value worldwide in the form of time and fuel savings, and savings of 380 megatons CO2 in mobility 4

02 TECHNOLOGIES Technologies To Enhance ITS for Road Transport Automation CyberSecurity As vehicles increasingly become connected through wireless networks towards 5G (3G, 4G, ITS-5G, DSRC, etc) to the transport infrastructure, the potential for individuals to cause damage is ever-more viable. Undoubtedly, the importance of implementing effective security protocols in traffic management operations to facilitate automated driving takes on additional significance since human life is endangered. To prepare for the arrival of autonomous vehicles, traffic control centers need to enforce standards and establish partnerships with experts to stay ahead of evolving threats and keep road users and their data safe 5

02 TECHNOLOGIES Technologies To Enhance ITS for Road Transport Automation Cooperative Systems It allows vehicles to exchange both status and event information (vehicles, ITS equipment, etc) via reliable, low-latency communication technologies V2X communications are key requirement for the connected and autonomous vehicle of the future, being closely linked to the concept of mobility and safety Improve road safety, alleviate traffic congestion, reduce fuel/energy consumption, and enhance the overall passenger experience are some of the benefits that can be obtained For V2X to become a reality, the automotive and transportation industries must first expand the scope and relevance of 5G CONTROL CENTRE C-ITS Services Vehicule as sensor: (floating car data) Vehicle detection and identification Personalized Information 6
