2 Simple Sample Tracking Using Custom Bar Codes The Thermo Scientific Nunc Bar Code Configurator provides an easy, convenient way to design and order custom bar coded Nunc plates. A step-bystep website - lets you quickly build the bar coding label scheme that is best for your application. Quick turnaround 4 to 6 weeks average Print a sample drawing and bar code - ensure compatibility with your reader Choose from 5 code types match your existing bar codes Select label location one or more plate sides No repeats guaranteed Your sequences archived with safe, secure access Human readable options positions and highlight color Nunc bar code labels are extremely durable to ensure reliable, consistent scanning. Bar codes are suitable for manual or automated operations. When scanners are not available, selected products offer trouble-free human readable code options. Select the Best Code for Your Application After reviewing your current bar code system or when starting your bar code scheme, your choices include: Number of digits Code type Numerical or alphanumerical Label location Prefixes or suffixes For further information and to download the bar coded plates request, visit Bar Coding Is The Safest Way To Track Your Samples Scanning bar codes is more accurate and substantially faster than manual entry. Time Required to key 20 char. Manual Entry Accuracy 1 error / 300 characters Bar Code Scanning 10 seconds 4 seconds 1 error / 10 million characters Design Your Bar code Labels, Step-By-Step 1 Select Your Nunc Plate Go to Select the plate you want to label from the dropdown menu. Or pick only the plate attributes you need such as number of wells, irradiated, well geometry. The program will generate a short plate list to choose from. 2 Indicate the Number of Plates You Need There are two quantities to note. First is the initial order of coded plates. Second is the total of the initial order and all future orders of this particular sequence/plate scheme. Click the lock if your quantities are final and you will not be making changes. Once quantities are specified, click on Label Definition tab.

3 The table at the top of this web page defines the maximum number of characters for each code type. By making selections in the Bar Code Type section you reduce the number of options (identified by green shading) to just one. The number of characters is made up of the prefix + sequence + suffix. 3 Bar Code Type X-dimension The narrowest part of a bar code s symbology. The X-dimension is used to determine a bar code s density. The smaller the value the more information can be coded on a label. Note: Check with manufacturer to determine bar code reader capabilities Bar Code Type We offer five (5) bar code types. Code 128 A Alphanumeric, UPPER CASE ONLY [0-9, A - Z] Code 128 B Alphanumeric, UPPER and lower case [0-9, A - Z, a - z] Code 128 C Numeric only, even number of digits. [0-9] Code 39 Alphanumeric, UPPER CASE ONLY [0-9, A - Z] Interleave 2/5 Numeric only, even number of digits. [0-9] Sequencing Character Option Numeric only Alphanumeric Human readable location There are 4 locations for human readable print. Left or Right of bar code allows the bar code to be full height of the label. This will be easier for a scanner to read. Above or Below the bar code allows room for more information but reduces the height of the bars. Color blocking option places a highlight color over the human readable text. This is only offered when the human readable text is left or right of the bar code.

4 4 Defining The Code Code Definition In this section you will define the prefix, sequence and suffix of the bar code. The maximum number of characters allowed is a result of your earlier selections of code type and human readable location. If you need more characters, you must change your earlier choices. Prefix First characters in the bar code, the prefix never changes. In the example above NUNC is the prefix. Total number of digits This is the number of digits to be used for the sequence. This will always display with leading and trailing zeros. In the above example there are 3 digits used for the sequence (001). Zero formats Option of normal zeros or Ø with slash. Sequence start value This is the value that you want your sequence to start at. In the example above the sequence starts at 001. Therefore the series would be NUNC001, NUNC002, NUNC003, NUNC004, etc. Suffix End of the bar code that never changes. In the example above, no suffix is shown. * You do not need to choose a prefix or suffix if it is not needed for your application; or you can choose one or the other. You can customize the bar code to fit your needs.

5 5 Select Label Location(s) In this section you will choose the side of the plate you would like bar coded. You can choose 1 side or multiple sides. Click on the appropriate box; the side you select will be highlighted in green. Location of label Dependant on the plate selected and the side of the plate that is bar-coded; you could select the bar code label placement to be centered on the side, justified left or right; or define the offset needed. 6 Label Properties The bar code surface of the labels can be non-laminated, laminated-gloss finish or laminated-matte finish. If you have selected the color blocking option the label must be laminated. Note that a gloss finish could cause glare that could interfere with your bar code reader. At any time during the configuration process, you may cancel your design by clicking Cancel Configuration. Once you have completed your selection to your satisfaction, click Save As at the top of the screen. You may assign any name and description for your custom bar code project. Click Save if you may have changes but wish to keep your work. If you are ready to prepare your design for order, click Save and Finalize. A catalog number for your product will be displayed. Click Exit to get a list of your projects and options; click Request a Quote to receive pricing for your custom bar coded plates.
