This followed a 0.1 pecent Septembe decease. Excluding tanspotation, new odes inceased 0.2 pecent. Shipments, up five consecutive months, inceased $2.6 billion o 0.6 pecent to $455.4 billion. This followed a 0.3 pecent Septembe incease. Unfilled odes, up eighteen of the last nineteen months, inceased $1.8 billion o 0.2 pecent to $885.9 billion. This followed a 0.6 pecent Septembe incease. The unfilled odes-to-shipments atio was 6.07, down fom 6.08 in Septembe. Inventoies, up twenty fou of the last twenty five months, inceased $5.6 billion o 0.9 pecent to $607.1 billion. This was at the highest level since the seies was fist published on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.1 pecent Septembe incease. The inventoies-toshipments atio was 1.33, unchanged fom Septembe. New Odes New odes fo manufactued duable goods in Octobe, down two consecutive months, deceased $0.9 billion o 0.5 pecent to $198.5 billion, evised fom the peviously published 0.7 pecent decease. This followed a 1.4 pecent Septembe decease. Tanspotation equipment, also down two consecutive months, had the lagest decease, $2.5 billion o 5.1 pecent to $47.2 billion. New odes fo manufactued nonduable goods deceased $0.7 billion o 0.3 pecent to $251.5 billion. Shipments Shipments of manufactued duable goods in Octobe, up five of the last six months, inceased $3.2 billion o 1.6 pecent to $203.9 billion, evised fom the peviously published 1.3 pecent incease. This followed a 0.4 pecent Septembe decease. Tanspotation equipment, up following two consecutive monthly deceases, had the lagest incease, $2.3 billion o 5.0 pecent to $48.4 billion. M3-2 (11)-10 CB Shipments of manufactued nonduable goods, down following fou consecutive monthly inceases, deceased $0.7 billion o 0.3 pecent to $251.5 billion. This followed a 0.9 pecent Septembe incease. Petoleum and coal poducts, down two of the last thee months, led the decease, down $0.6 billion o 0.8 pecent to $71.2 billion. Unfilled Odes Unfilled odes fo manufactued duable goods in Octobe, up eighteen of the last nineteen months, inceased $1.8 billion o 0.2 pecent to $885.9 billion, unchanged fom the peviously published incease. This was at the highest level since the seies was fist published on a NAICS basis and followed a slight Septembe incease. Tanspotation equipment, also up twenty two consecutive months, had the lagest incease, $0.9 billion o 0.8 pecent to $113.6 billion. Inventoies of manufactued nonduable goods, up two consecutive months, inceased $3.9 billion o 1.7 pecent to $240.2 billion. This followed a 0.4 pecent Septembe incease. Petoleum and coal poducts, also up two consecutive months, led the incease, up $3.1 billion o 6.1 pecent to $53.8 billion. By stage of fabication, Octobe mateials and supplies inceased 0.2 pecent in duable goods and 3.5 pecent in nonduable goods. 9 9 Suvey Desciption This epot is compiled fom esults of the U.S. Census Bueau s Manufactues Shipments, Inventoies, and Odes (M3) suvey. This suvey povides statistics on manufactues' value of shipments, new odes (net of cancellations), end-of-month ode backlog (unfilled odes), end-of-month total inventoy (at cuent cost o maket value), and inventoies by stage of fabication (mateials and supplies, wok-inpocess, and finished goods). The M3 includes appoximately 4,300 epoting units. Units may be divisions of divesified lage companies, lage homogenous companies, o single-unit manufactues in 89 industy categoies. Due to the small monthly sample, these 89 categoies have been combined into 65 publication levels. The suvey methodology assumes that the month-to-month changes of the total opeations of those companies in the monthly suvey effectively epesent the month-to-month movements of all establishments that make up the categoy. The cuent coveage levels in the suvey show that epoted data in the monthly suvey epesent appoximately 60 pecent of the shipments estimates at the total manufactuing level. Data published epesent manufactuing in a calenda month. The data collection is based on a voluntay suvey authoized by Title 13 of the United States Code. The data pesented in this elease ae based on data obtained fom a panel of 4,300 epoting units and povide an indication of the activity within the manufactuing secto. The esults diffe fom what would be obtained fom a complete enumeation of all manufactuing companies. In addition, a diffeent panel of 4,300 companies would yield diffeent esults. The M3 panel is compised of companies with $500 million o moe in shipments and a limited numbe of smalle companies. Fom a statistical pespective, the panel is not a pobability sample; theefoe, the sampling eos that ae nomally povided with sample suveys cannot be measued.
