1 Guidelines for the application and reproduction of the ENERGY STAR name and symbol in Canada March 2015 Participants in the ENERGY STAR Initiative in Canada are responsible for the proper use of the ENERGY STAR name and symbol. This responsibility also extends to any authorized representative of the Participant, such as suppliers or advertising agencies. Participants must use the ENERGY STAR name and symbol consistently and appropriately to: identify products that meet ENERGY STAR s technical specifications for energy performance promote the symbol in educational and promotional material Note: Window and door manufacturers and their dealers should refer to the document entitled Labelling and Promotional Guidelines for ENERGY STAR Certified Windows, Doors and Skylights Sold in Canada for additional details on the correct use of the ENERGY STAR symbol for these products. 2 1. Registration of the ENERGY STAR name and symbol in Canada Canada is an international partner in the ENERGY STAR program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has officially registered the ENERGY STAR name and symbol in Canada with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. Under an Administrative Agreement with the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is responsible for administering and monitoring the use of the ENERGY STAR name and symbol in Canada. These guidelines have been developed to meet the requirements of the Agreement. Monitoring entails overseeing the use of the symbol in the marketplace and communicating directly with entities that misuse it. Misuse of the name and symbol may result in termination of the Participant Arrangement. In addition, the U.S. Customs Service may seize products exported to the U.S. if they display the ENERGY STAR symbol incorrectly according to EPA guidelines. Organizations may use the ENERGY STAR name and symbol only in accordance with these guidelines and by signing: a Participant Administrative Arrangement with NRCan or, a letter of permission from NRCan for one time use. 2. ENERGY STAR identity The ENERGY STAR identity consists of: a. The name ENERGY STAR The name "ENERGY STAR" must always appear in all capital letters and as two words. This rule applies to any use of the name in any application, text or image. There are no exceptions. In the first reference in a text, the name ENERGY STAR must include the registered trademark symbol in superscript. Using the ENERGY STAR name in a body of text When you introduce ENERGY STAR in a text (such as a press release), you must emphasize its Canadian identity, as follows: The ENERGY STAR Initiative in Canada. (French L'Initiative de haute efficacité ENERGY STAR au Canada.) You may also express the ENERGY STAR symbol in the body of the text, as follows: The ENERGY STAR symbol or registered mark. (French Le symbole de haute efficacité ENERGY STAR, ou la marque de commerce enregistrée.) 2

3 For example, in text the name would be used as follows: ENERGY STAR is the mark of high energy efficiency in Canada. or Pool pumps are now eligible for ENERGY STAR certification. See Annex A for a list of proper and improper ways to describe ENERGY STAR. b. The symbol The ENERGY STAR symbol consists of a graphic block and a message block. These elements are integral to the symbol and must not be used separately. The ENERGY STAR name and the ENERGY STAR symbol must never be used in a manner that promotes products that are not ENERGY STAR certified or suggests that NRCan or any other Government of Canada body endorses a particular organization, company or product. 3. Using the ENERGY STAR symbol All versions of the ENERGY STAR symbol are available in: blue (100 percent cyan), black-and-white, and white drop-out to be used on a coloured background. 3

4 In Canada, there are three versions of the ENERGY STAR symbol for specific applications. a. Certification version of the ENERGY STAR symbol This square version must be used to identify certified products that meet ENERGY STAR specifications. NB: It must not be used for any other purpose. It can appear directly on the certified product itself or on its image, its packaging, or product inserts. It must be shown directly on or beside the image of the certified product in electronic and printed media (AVs, website, flyers, catalogues). It cannot be placed along the bottom or side of a page unless every product displayed on the page meets ENERGY STAR specifications. Language that clearly identifies the certified models should be used. The [product name] meets ENERGY STAR specifications. Include specific language under each of the certified models and/or add the bulleted point to a list of product attributes. ENERGY STAR certified The symbol must not be placed next to other general icons (logos). On certified fenestration products, the graphic for climate zone(s) qualification must also appear in accordance with the Fenestration Labelling Guidelines. b. Promotional/educational version of the ENERGY STAR symbol This version, containing the tag line Preferred HIGH EFFICIENCY/HAUTE EFFICACITÉ, is to be used in promotional or educational materials. Use the English first or French first tag line as per the official language. This version is to be used when no specific product is mentioned. When a number of other logos are grouped together, only the Promotional version or the Participant version of the ENERGY STAR symbol can be used. Use text that explains the purpose of the ENERGY STAR name or symbol. Optional For example, Look for the ENERGY STAR. It shows that a product meets ENERGY STAR criteria for high energy efficiency. 4

5 ENERGY STAR review policy NRCan must review and approve any educational or promotional materials that feature the ENERGY STAR name or symbol before final production or printing to ensure consistency with the guidelines. Materials should be submitted to your Account Manager or via at c. Participant version of the ENERGY STAR symbol Preferred This version of the ENERGY STAR symbol, containing the tag line PARTICIPANT, is to be used by Participants to highlight their engagement with the ENERGY STAR Initiative. It can be used in corporate or promotional materials such as business cards, corporate signage, beside a corporate logo in advertisements. When a number of other logos are grouped together on materials, only the Participant version or the Promotional version of the ENERGY STAR symbol can be used. Optional Example: Note: The EPA allows more versions of the ENERGY STAR symbol in the U.S., but only the versions that are shown in these guidelines can be used in Canada. In cases were Natural Resources Canada is being recognized on materials, the department is represented by the "Canada" wordmark. It must appear, as stipulated in the Communications Policy of the Government of Canada. Please ensure that you comply with Federal Identity Program requirements. One-time-only use of the name and symbol If you are not an ENERGY STAR Participant and have received limited permission to use the ENERGY STAR name and symbol from NRCan, the following credit line must appear in all materials: The ENERGY STAR mark is administered and monitored in Canada by Natural Resources Canada. Reproduction of ENERGY STAR information from NRCan must appear as received, without any changes or modifications. The following credit line must appear in all publications: Reproduced with permission of the Minister of Natural Resources Canada, 20XX. Note: "20XX" represents the year of publication of the document. Instructions on how to obtain details and/or further information on the ENERGY STAR in Canada must appear as follows: For information on ENERGY STAR in Canada, visit the website The ENERGY STAR name or symbol cannot be placed alongside other product or association logos in a publication or brochure that would give the impression that NRCan endorses the organization, unless the name or symbol is accompanied by an explanatory statement. 5. Reproducing the ENERGY STAR name and symbol These requirements apply to all versions of the ENERGY STAR symbol. The symbol comprises the ENERGY STAR graphic block and the attached message block. The two blocks are separated by a single white rule equal in thickness to the arc within the graphic. The symbol also has a white line around it that is equal in thickness to the arc within the graphic. Different colour variations of the symbol in blue (100 percent cyan), in black and white and in dropout white are supplied to Participants electronically in various graphic formats: EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) JPG (JPEG Joint Photographic Experts Group) BMP (Bitmap) and TIF (TIFF Tagged Image File Format) Distribute these files to your graphics department and/or supplier. 6

7 Integrity of the symbol The symbol must never be altered, cut apart, separated or otherwise distorted in perspective or appearance in any way. The word "ENERGY" and STAR in the symbol must always appear in English. Clear space Text or other graphic elements must not run into or through the symbol. A clear area needs to be created around the symbol for clarity. This area should be equivalent to one third (1/3) the height of the graphic block. No other graphic element, such as text, lines, or images should appear in this area. Minimum size Although the symbol can be resized, constant proportions must be maintained. To ensure legibility for print applications, the graphic block of the symbol should not be reproduced to a size smaller than 1 cm in width. For web applications, legibility of the wording inside the messaging block must be maintained. Colour specification The colour for the ENERGY STAR symbol is 100 percent cyan (blue). The equivalent Web colour is hex colour #0099FF. Black or dropped-out white versions are also allowed. If colour printing is available for advertising, product literature, point-of-purchase materials, etc., the symbol should be printed in 100 percent cyan (blue). If cyan is not available, an alternate version in black is allowed. 8 Incorrect use of all versions of the ENERGY STAR symbol In the examples below, the ENERGY STAR certification version of the symbol has been modified. These uses are deemed unacceptable. Using the ENERGY STAR symbol with a mandatory EnerGuide label All major home appliances and room air conditioners sold in Canada, including all ENERGY STAR certified models, are required by Canada s Energy Efficiency Regulations to have an EnerGuide label. Product brand owners can choose to show an ENERGY STAR certification version of the symbol beside the EnerGuide label or use a dual EnerGuide / ENERGY STAR label. If the EnerGuide label and/or information appear with the ENERGY STAR symbol, credit is to appear in the publication as follows: The EnerGuide label and text is produced with permission of the Minister of Natural Resources Canada, 20XX.
