2 Vähälä Corporation Found in 1937 by Mr. Lauri Vähälä Vähälä Corporation is still 100% family owned company Part of Kiitolinja network since 50 s Kiitolinja brand was abolished in Operating now as a partner of DB Schenker network Main focus in general cargo and in parcel cargo

3 Vähälä Corporation Vähälä operates in Northern and in central Finland (terminals, sales and delivery operations) Vähälä operates also from and to different DB Schenker locations (linehaul) Two hubs in linehaul Main target in linehaul traffic planning is to form full units (trailers or swap bodies) instead of handling shipments through the terminal floor

4 Current operation models Fleet is very homogenous in Finnish transportation market Operators has difficuties to differentiate from another in matter of fleet Vähäläs current operation model: 64 to 68 tons 8 axel module trucks with swap body 69 to 76 tons 9 axel B-trains with V- Sliders adjusted to swap bodies and semitrailers Semitrailers

5 Vähälä HCT research projects: #1 19,6m long semitrailer 2 units operating in Helsinki Jyväskylä linehaul Measurements was adopted from Sweden! With one extra axel Main targets of the research project: To investigate and develope a stabile and road safety semitrailer truck To develope a semitrailer truck that is environment friendly in sense of low fuel consumption and one refrigerator unit To develope a semitrailer truck that cost efficient in personnell costs (no additional connection- and disconnection times used, less loading doors at the terminals and warehouses) Also additional technical researches for example 5 axel combination with 2 steering axels Results of the research are provided monthly to TraFi

6 Vähälä HCT research projects: #2 Total length 31,5m and total maximum weight 88tn 2 units operating in Helsinki Oulu linehaul (licence to Rovaniemi) Main targets of the research project: To investigate and develope a stabile and road safety semitrailer truck To develope a stabile 88tn truck with 2 articulations (common model in Finland had been in earlier studies 3 articulations) To investigate the greater cubic capacity benefits and how to reduce environmental emissions over to transported cubic meters / tons To develope a HCT truck that can be loaded and unloaded trailer by trailer outside of the licenced road

7 Future operation models in 2019 Upcoming legislation provides new possibilities Differentiating The whole fleet won t be 34,5m long The linehaul and delivery operations will differ in fleet point of view Tailored units in special operations The whole industry (transportation, car manufacturers and trailer manufacturers) is waiting for the final conclusion of the legislation Vähälä Corporation is looking forward to new era in transportation Ability to use current units (trailers) with probably some tailoring in shifting mesurements Vähälä Corporation is researching new possibilities in different volume linehauls More capacity in busy linehauls

8 Future operation models in 2019 Main purpose for Vähälä Corporation is to use existing fleet units Tailored measurements of fleet units at low level value after usage time New legislation enables a lot of different varities in fleet, depending on purpose Two of Vähäläs core values are road safety and responsibility Vähälä aims to operate all the time with modern fleet low fuel consumption and less emission per carried cubic / ton Optimization of linehaul in terminal network is our priority after new legislation Vähälä Corporation is researching alternative fuels the first LNG truck will arrive in November LNG truck + HCT semi trailer

9 Future operation models in 2019 Vähälä Corporation has been influencing to the legislation considering long trailers Vähälä HCT research project #1 (19,6m long semitrailer) Legislation: 17m long trailer or semitrailer At this moment we don t see 17m long units in Vähälä fleet When structural weight of longer units increases, the lenght in mass transportation (lumber, paper rolls etc.) won t probably increase Above will reduce the freight capacity (tons) and added axels increases fuel consumption Assumably most economic way for this transportation mode is to continue using module measurements (25,25m length)

10 Challenges of the legislation Main challenge for longer vehicles will be the urban and lower level road network Taking this in consideration, we are aiming to build trucks that can be also used as smaller units The maximum total weight of 76 ton is very suitable in our point of view. Most important for us is to increase cubic capacity Increasing the total maximum weight is bigger issue. It has to be done in terms of Finnish road network
