4 Why a Standard on Paper for Re cyclin g? Define what grades of Paper for Recycling contain and don t contain Assist industry professionals in buying and selling of Paper for Recycling Inform customs and excise officers Secure comparable requirements for a material widely traded in Europe and beyond 4

5 The process of standard development From 2008: negotiations between CEPI, ERPA and FEAD 2011: joint proposal to CEN June 2011: CEN decision to revise the EN : CEN working group discussions 8 November 2013 Approval of the revised EN 643 by the CEN national bodies February 2014: publication 5

6 Key elements of the EN 643 Prohibited materials: 0 tolerance Unwanted material with a maximum tolerance level Prohibited materials (not permitted at all) Non-paper components (with tolerance levels) P&B detrimental to production P&B not according to grade definition Unwanted materials (with tolerance levels) P&B not suitable for deinking (when intended for deinking) 6

7 General quality issues Key elements of the EN 643 Clear statement that paper from refuse collection is not usable in the paper industry Clear requirement that paper from commingled collection has to be specifically marked Specific requirements for deinking grades Reference to INGEDE (International Association of the Deinking Industry) Method 7 on visual inspection List of grades, in which non-deinkable papers count as unwanted material Problem of shredding is highlighted Moisture content: 10%
