Presentation for People Leaders Presented by David Leinster, Manager, Brand & Creative Services

Importance Why Traceability Is Important Aging infrastructure Failures are more common Technological advances in forensics provides learning opportunities It s required by regulators Existing Systems Being Stressed New projects delayed Pipeline segments taken out of service for inspection & maintenance place stress on other segments. 7 Traceability Regulations PG&E initial reports were seamless pipe from San Bruno incident on Sept 9, 2010 PHMSA Jan 10, 2011 Advisory Bulletin 'Traceable, Verifiable and Complete' to establish MAOP/MOP API RP Recommended Practice for Steel Pipeline Construction Quality Management Systems. November 2017 ISO 9001:2015 Section Identification and Traceability

Traceability Regulations PHMSA defines traceable records as those which can be clearly linked to original information about a pipeline segment or facility. Traceable records include pipe mill records purchase requisition as-built documentation indicating minimum pipe yield strength, seam type, wall thickness and diameter. Information from a transcribed document, in many cases, should be verified with complementary or supporting documents Verifiable records are records in which information is confirmed by other complementary, but separate, documentation. Verifiable records might include contract specifications for a pressure test of a line segment complemented by pressure charts or field logs

API 5-L Requirements Additional markings, as desired by the manufacturer or as specified in the purchase order, may be applied but shall not interrupt the sequence of the required markings as they appear in a) to j) as applicable. Such additional markings shall be located after the end of the required marking sequence or as a separate marking at some other location on the pipe. Common mill run purchase order language The pipe Manufacturer shall assign a unique traceability number to each length of pipe to facilitate tracking through production and finishing and shall ensure that each section of pipe and jointer pipe are identifiable during each stage of the manufacturing process.

We do things differently now Regulations have changed Much greater public oversight Environmentally sensitive practices Inspector credentials, API 1169, NACE, etc. Better traceability Quality Management Plan Trained personnel Better equipment Documented procedures Quality Control

Kobe has said some 500 companies worldwide are in a supply chain tainted by admissions that it falsified certifications on the strength and durability of metals going back to 2007, including automotive giants Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. and the U.S. s biggest plane maker, Boeing Co. The besieged Japanese company said in a statement it can t yet quantify the impact of the crisis on its earnings.
