What is SimWalk?

What is SimWalk? SimWalk is a specialized and integrated simulation solution for all passenger movement issues in rail, metro, and bus stations.

Simulation of Passengers SimWalk is a micro-simulator that realistically models every single passenger with her properties and goals.

Simulation of Station Dynamics SimWalk simulates station dynamics with arrival, boarding/alighting, changing trains, transfer time and departure. Corridor / Passage - Transfer time - Densities - Objects Train properties: - Timetable data (departure / arrival) manually, imported or Network Simulator - Train composition (preconfigured coach library) - Number of passengers - Destinations (%) - Alighting distribution (%); where passengers exit the train in A Tra track Train C

Measures of Effectiveness Density analyis (bottlenecks, high density on platfforms etc.) Boarding/ alighting time (per train or coach) Speed (mean, per passenger or group) Travel / change train time (mean, per passenger or group) Space utilization (pedestrians per square meter) Person counting (counting line or area) & Flow rates (counters) Density analysis of train station

SimWalk Simulation Analysis Simulation results may be analysed and presented as tables, bar charts, 2D and 3D, videos or snapshots. Simulation results are stored in Access Database and can analyzed with integrated SimData analyser or customized by SQL queries. Numerical results can be directly exported to Excel or maybe analyzed in other statistics software.

Benefits of SimWalk Simulation and analysis of passenger capacity issues regarding dwell times, platform capacities, boarding and alighting and timetable optimization Analysis of passenger bottlenecks, delays and high densities in transport facilities Capacity evaluation and feasibility testing of transport connection devices (escalators, stairs etc.) Whole product solution with complimentary software, services and support Preconfigured and customized rolling stock library 2D and 3D visualization of simulation results Improves transit service and transit agency image Enhances passenger safety and comfort

Evacuation simulation of stations Simulation of evacuation scenarios in stations = Passengers react on given incidents and emergency cases and try to reach the next available emergency exit ( Hazard function in SimWalk) Verification by simulation: Analysis of evacuation time: Evacuation time (result.) < Evacuation time (requested)

Management of Commercial Space at Stations SimWalk allows to integrate the commercial environment of stations: - SimWalk allows to model shopping behavior for shoppers or missed-train passengers. - Passenger flow simulation through commercial environments allows to spot attractive locations - SimWalk allows to evaluate changes in the commercial environment (obstacles, actions, new shops etc.)

Station Areas to be Analyzed 2) Platform access (stairs etc) 4) Passage access 3) Passages 1) Platforms Copyright IVT/ETH

Available platform space for waiting / alighting passengers Evaluation 1 Platform Dimensioning Verification by simulation: Passenger density (result.) < Passenger density (requ.) e.g. standards: max. servic level B for certain areas during a certain time

Evaluation 2 Boarding / Alighting process Duration of boarding /alighting - available platform space for waiting plus alighting passengers Verification by simulation: 1) Duration of boarding/alighting process 2) Passenger density (result.) < passenger density (requir.) e.g. requirements: service level D for boarding area service level D for alighting area

Evaluation 3 Alighting passengers draining off Duration of leaving the platform - Available width of platform access / available space Verification by simulation: Draining off time (result.) < Draining off time (requir.) Average waiting time (result.) < Average waiting time (requir.) Area demand (backlog, result.) < Waiting area (available)

Evaluation 4.1 Train switching passenger flows Dimensioning: Available width of under- / overpasses Verification by simulation : Capacity analyis: Passenger flow (inflow) < Passenger flow (cross-section capacity limit) Quality of traffic: Passenger density (result.) < Passenger density (requir.) 20 Working with SimWalk Station Plans - Station plans can be imported directly into SimWalk in.dxf format. - Single or multiple levels are possible - Plans have to be prepared / cleaned for simulation - Plans can be changed fast and efficiently in SimDraw CAD module to evaluate different scenarios

Working with SimWalk Connection Objects - SimWalk connection objects (stairs, elevators, escalators, gates, turnstiles) are modelled as graphical objects with respective properties - Properties are object specific as for example capacity, frequency, delay, speed reduction or utilization time. - Turnstiles are modeled with a delay time caused by the turnstile and in both directions - Man conveyors are modelled with delay areas: speed limit, speed reduction, utilization time

Rolling Stock Library and Boarding / Alighting SimWalk integrates a preconfigured library of rolling stock / coaches with respective parameters for boarding / alighting (width of doors, seat positions etc.). Train compositions can be assembled based on libraries. Rolling stock data import from Network Simulator possible. Train interiors may also be simulated in the next future.

Working with SimWalk Vehicle objects - Trains consists of vehicle objects (single coach) and formations (whole train) - Every formation is assigned a planned/simulated arrival and departure time - Door objects based on type specification are added to train objects (door width, open time) rolling stock library - Boarding / Alighting process: due to higher pressure all alighting passengers get out first until passengers are boarding - Minim. stopping time (set) + ev. delay based on boarding

Working with SimWalk Track Objects - Track lines can be drawn in the plan according to spatial specification of rail, metro or bus station. - Tracks can be drawn open or closed and on different plan levels. - Every node can be assigned to be a start/departure or end/arrival point. - Front pivot point of vehicle and halting / starting nodes of tracks can be matched.

Working with SimWalk Vehicle Library - Vehicle Library allows to preconfigure vehicle types (train, metro, bus) - Compositions are built based on configured vehicle types

Working with SimWalk Formation Builder - Formation Builder allows to schedule compositions = formations based on timetables - Assigning i platforms and tracks to formations as well as stop nodes - Assigning passenger types/profiles and exit distributions by vehicle and doors

Working with SimWalk Way assigning - Passengers are primarily assigned to specific tracks and to formations (e.g. track 7, metro 11) Transfer area - A track assignment is at the same time a transfer area assignment (passengers wait at boarding area 7 until metro 11 arrives) - Way assigning can be managed from general to detailed - Most general: All passengers from metro 11 want to catch metro 15 on track 13 = passengers choose shortest way to track 13 - Very specific: 10% of train coach 5 exit the train at middle door, take the elevator, go to the ticket office, drink a coffee and go to metro 15

Interface with network simulator / RAILSIM et al. Re-Integration of SimWalk data into Network Simulator (e.g. additional dwell times due to longer transfer times) Integration of simulated network and station data via RailML (e.g. delays) Input data for SimWalk simulation

SimWalk Station Solution (STSS) STSS = Integrated solution for data gathering g and analysis with software partners PARSON: Passenger Counting, Origin-Destination data IOMNISCIENT: Station analysis and passenger management PETRACK: Passenger path extraction from CCTV data (calibration, validation)

SimWalk - 3D visualization - SimWalk 3D visualization is based on three data sources: 1) Virtual worlds /stations ti created with 3D software (e.g. 3ds Max) export in VRML format) 2) Virtual humans / passengers provided d by SimWalk (or self-created in MD2 format) VRML virtual worlds (3ds Max etc.) Virtual humans library + + SimWalk simulation data 3) SimWalk simulation data -- All data are integrated/rendered with SimWalk 3D module SimWalk 3D module = Rendering Engine
