5 Traceability Sub-committee Strategic Advisory Council The purpose of the Council is to work in a cooperative and advisory capacity to develop and implement strategic initiatives that will increase the awareness and adoption of Electronic Product Code (EPC) based Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Traceability in Canada. Traceability Sub-committee The mission of this group is to develop and implement a strategy, by working with key stakeholders in government and industry that will increase the awareness and adoption of global traceability standards across industry in Canada. 5

11 Product Recall System FMI approached GS1 for assistance GS1 s response rapid application development initiative started in late 2007 to deliver: Proof-of-concept Prototype solution using existing message-based platform (Message Centre) Developed a member self-registration component Executed several industry pilots to verify the approach Launched a prototype platform in January

12 Product Recall System Development Comprehensive review of current recall practices Best industry practices and CFIA, FDA and USDA recommendations were used to guide development of form and functionality Three successful pilots carried out with more than 25 manufacturers and retailers Based on pilot feedback, the Product Recall Notification Form has been optimized System has been presented to the FDA and received their support 12

28 Roles Manufacturer Recall Initiator Role: Initiates a recall, completes the form and includes attachments. This role cannot issue a recall; sends the recall to Approver Approver Role: Reviews a recall; can reject a recall or send it live to retailers. This role cannot initiate a recall. Retailer Recall Receiver Role: Reviews a recall that was sent live to retailers. This role cannot initiate a recall. Note: Roles are assigned by Primary Contact at Registration 28
