1 Dalroad Incorporating Cable Accessories & Lewisham Auto Electrics Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974 Health and Safety Policy GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY Our policy is to provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions, equipment and systems of work for all out employees, and to provide such information, training and supervision, as they need for this purpose. We also accept responsibility for the health and safety of other people who may be affected by our activities. The allocation of duties for safety matters and the particular arrangements, which we will make to implement the policy, are set out below. It is the responsibility of all employees to help in making this policy effective. The policy will be kept up to date, particularly as the business changes in nature and size. To ensure this, the policy and the way in which it is operated will be reviewed every year. 2 SECTION A Organisation and responsibilities The overall and final responsibility for Health and Safety in the company is that of Mr David Chinn-Shaw - Managing Director The Operations Manager, Steven Carpenter is responsible for ensuring this policy being carried out at the premises at Enterprise Way, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU3 4BU. The person responsible as the manager s deputy is David Chinn-Shaw All employees have the responsibility to cooperate with the company, director and manager to achieve a healthy and safe workplace and to take reasonable care of themselves and others. Whenever an employee, manager or director notices a health and safety problem, which they are not able to put right, they must, straightaway tell the appropriate named person above. They may also tell a safety representative if there is one. Consultation between management and employees is provided as part of a weekly operations meeting, held every Monday morning with all internal staff. Consultation with external staff will be on a six monthly basis during the sales meetings. 3 SECTION B General Arrangements ACCIDENTS The first aid box is located in each of the kitchen areas and an eye bath kit by the forklift service area. The appointed person responsible for the first aid box is Joan Carpenter. All accidents must be recorded in the accident book which is located with Nina White and reported to Steven Carpenter / Joan Carpenter Certain workplace accidents are reportable under the Reporting of injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR). Immediate notification to the Local Authority, Environmental Health Department by telephone is required if: 1. A member of the public is killed to taken into hospital connected with your work. This must be followed up with a report form (F2508) within 10 days. 2. Your employee or self-employed person working on your premises is killed or suffers major injury connected with your work. This must be followed p with a report form (F2508) within 10 days. 3. Any other injury to an employee which results in their absence from work or being unable to do their normal work for more than three days. This must be followed p with a report form (F2508) within 10 days. Major injuries include fractures other than to fingers, thumbs or toes, amputation, dislocation of the shoulder, hip, knee or spine, incidents resulting in electrical shock etc. Diseases relating to work activities are also covered by the above regulations. Reportable diseases include some skin diseases (eg occupational dermatitis) lung diseases, (eg occupational asthma) and infections such as leptospirosis, legionellosis and other conditions such as occupation cancer and certain musculoskeletal diseases. Further advice can be obtained from the Environmental Health Department or from the current RIDDOR leaflet. Page 3

4 GENERAL FIRE SAFETY The appointed person responsible for fire safety is Steven Carpenter The appointed person responsible for emergency procedures is Steven Carpenter The appointed persons responsible for maintenance is Steven Carpenter / David Chinn-Shaw Location of escape routes are displayed on the Fire Safety Maps. These are displayed in the work place on the notice boards in the kitchen area and the Sales office The fire alarm will be tested on a regular basis and records kept of each test. 5 TRAINING All employees of Dalroad Norslo Ltd will receive training relating to their job, to enable them to carry out their job safely. The person responsible for induction training is Steven Carpenter Specific training is carried out by previously trained individuals and external sources (Eg visual display units, manual handling, safe use of chemicals) Records of training will be kept by Steven Carpenter as part of Dalroad Norslo Ltd s ISO procedures. Hazardous/specific jobs requiring specific training are carried out by the Warehouse Operatives Authorised people who have been trained to carry out specific jobs are as follows: Russell Fleckney is authorised to drive a reach forklift truck. Steven Carpenter is authorised to drive a reach forklift truck. Joe Smyth is authorised to drive a reach forklift truck. Ashton Dear is authorised to drive a reach forklift truck. Employees who have not been trained for the processes/jobs above are not authorised to carry them out. CONTRACTORS AND VISITORS All contractors and visitors must report to Steven Carpenter / Russell Fleckney, who will explain safety procedures//specific hazards of our workplace. The rules and procedures relating to contractors and visitors can be found in the reception area. Are there any specific hazards arising from contractors work/do they have a safe system of work. 7 SECTION C Hazards HOUSEKEEPING AND PREMISES The company rules in relation to the following are: Cleanliness: It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that their work are kept tidy at all times Waste disposal: It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that waste is disposed of appropriately in the provided bins. E.g. re-cycling bins, cardboard bins, general waste Stacking and Storage: It is the responsibility of the individuals to ensure that all stackable items are stored in the correct manner Marking and keeping gangways clear: Walkways in the office are to be kept free of obstructions by all office staff. The warehouse markings for forklift truck are clearly marked and are the responsibility of the warehouse staff. All warehouse gangway access should be kept clear of obstruction and continually checked as part of the warehouse staff s daily routines. Checking equipment: Checking any company equipment is the responsibility of the user before any function or use is carried out. If the user suspects that any fault or malfunction is present, it should be reported immediately to the Operations Manager. Protective equipment and clothing is supplied to the warehouse operatives by the company and should be looked after and maintained by the individual user. It is the responsibility of the user to notify the Operations Manager when replacements are required. Protective gloves and goggles are provided for use when maintaining the forklift truck. Safe access to particular places is checked on a weekly basis. Any obstructions should be immediately reported to the Operations Manager. Page 7

8 ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT All electrical equipment and installations should be maintained to prevent danger. A member of staff can check plugs, leads etc. Major installations will be check by an electrical contractor. We have made arrangements for portable electrical equipment to be inspected for loose connections and faults every year by Barclay Electrical Arrangements with electrical contractors for periodic checks of the electrical installation and portable equipment is: Barclay Electrical Any defective equipment must be taken out of use and notified to the Operations Manager immediately.
