4 . Packing list information.. General information Two different documents or messages are in use in the European steel industry to inform the customer or the consignee of the delivery of goods. The first is the usage of the Despatch advice giving the details of a consignment starting from a point of view of the goods or articles. The second way is the packing list giving the details of a consignment from a point of view of the equipments, handling units and packages used to despatch the goods or articles. This document details the use of the Packing list and the class diagram. The use of the despatch advice and the class diagram are detailed in another document. In the steel industry the Packing list is sent by the supplier or the consignor to inform the customer, the consignee or a third party of a certain despatch of goods to the delivery address. This message provides the receiver of the message with detailed information concerning the consignment, such as the mode and means of transport, equipment information, despatch date estimated date of arrival, terms of delivery, delivery place and each package containing goods in despatch. The packing list is normally sent at the departure of the consignment. The packing list message relates to a single despatch point (ship from location) and a single destination point (ship to location), with possible multiple unloading points. It may cover a number of different packages containing product units. The message allows the recipient to: - know when the products have been dispatched or shall be ready for despatch, - have the precise details of the consignment - reconcile between the despatched products and the received products. The message can contain some product details, such as quality, size, quantities and references numbers, but cannot be used to give all the details about the product units: The complete material specification of the product units should be given by using the Certificate/Quality report message. With the Certificate/Quality report message it is possible to provide the technical details of each product unit and the chemical, mechanical and other properties. For multi modal transport, the packing list shall cover only one consignment during one of the different steps in transport, used to deliver the goods from the supplier to the customer. 3

5 .2. The different usages of the message The Packing list message can be used in different ways based on the agreement between the partners involved. The circumstances in which the message is used need to be clearly defined between the supplier or consignor and the customer, consignee or third party. The difference is made based on the level of detail requested by the receiving party and the role of the receiving party defined in the shipping cycle. If the packing list is dealing with a pre-carriage to the port of departure and the receiver of the goods is responsible for the transfer of the goods to a vessel, he shall only be interested in the packages and not in the specific content of the package being the product units. If the packing list is dealing with a transport to a third party warehouse acting as an intermediate, the packing list shall contain details of the packages but may not contain details of the product units. When the packing list covers a despatch to a third party warehouse or a consignment warehouse controlled by the customer, the message shall provide not only the package information but also the details about the product units. If the packing list is dealing with the final despatch to the customer based on the delivery terms, the message can provide the hierarchical structure of the consignment or can be limited to the details of the product units. The different ways are: For a transport point of view it can be of interest to have the complete top down information starting from the means of transport (transport vehicle), the equipments used, the packages used and the product units. For a consignment point of view only information shall be provided of the transport vehicle and the packages containing the product unit despatched with the vehicle. If only information on the product units in relation to the article numbers or order item number is requested, this information can be provided by using the despatch advice in stead of the packing list. 4
