3 Introduction This inventory describes the records of the Anglo British Columbia Packing Company. The fond consists of 250 linear feet of financial records and correspondence relating to main office activities and the daily operations of fish canneries on the British Columbia coast between 1891 and Financial records from the cannery sites make up the bulk of the fonds while main office correspondence measures 8 linear feet. The records date from 1891 to 1968 and were acquired by the University of British Columbia's Special Collections between 1970 and There are no restrictions on this material. ui

4 Administrative History In 1889, Henry Ogle Bell-Irving acquired options on nine operating fish canneries: seven on the Fraser River and two on the Skeena River. On 14 april 1891, Bell-Irving purchased a Prospectus for $330,000. Later that year on the 22 December, the Anglo- British Columbia Packing company was incorporated in Middlesex, England. Bell- Irving's firm, then named Bell-Irving and Patterson, was appointed first Managing and Selling Agents. They maintained a head-office for the company in Vancouver, and titular head-office in London, England. In 1894, the Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company began expansion of their operations by constructing the Good Hope Cannery on Rivers Inelt. In 1895, H.O. Bell- Irving and Company assumed sole Managing and Selling Agent responsibilities. Also in that year, the Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company established the Fidalgo Island Packing Company, which remained a subsidiary until 1964, when it was sold. In 1931, after the death of H.O. Bell-Irving, the management of the Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company was assumed by Bell-Irving's son Richard and Peter Traill, both former directors. In 1966, the company expanded its operations to Caraquet, New Brunswick, where it built a herring reduction plant. The Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company sold the salmon cannery business in 1969, yet continued to operate the herring reduction plant until 1974, when the company folded completely. 5 Scope and Content Notes The records of the Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company were acquired by the University of British Columbia's Special Collections between 1969 and There is no accession documentation for this fonds, and the name of the donor and reasons for transfer to this institution unknown. The fonds covers 40 metre of records, relating to the daily operations of 9 canneries on the British Columbia coast. The bulk of the material is financial records and operating created between 1891 and 1968 at the main office in Vancouver, and more often respective cannery sites. On-site record series include Fishermen's Accounts, Payroll. Series from the Vancouver office include Statements, Payroll records. The majority of this information is contained in oversize, bound volumes and unbound registers. The correspondence is contained in eight one-cubic foot boxes. This fond is related to other fonds generated by H.O. Bell- Irving and Company, such as the H.O. Bell-Irving Insurance Company. The original order of the material has not been retained and no attempt has been made to physically group the items according to assumed series. However, the records have been arranged intellectually; alphabetically by form of material. The records are described at the series level within the subgroups, which are as follows: Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company ( ); Alert Bay Plant ( ; Boswell Cannery ( ); Caledonia Cannery ( ); Seymour Cannery ( ); Good Hope Cannery ( ); Knight Inlet Canner ( ); McTavish Cannery ( ); North Pacific Cannery ( ); Phoenix and Brittania Canneries ( ). Minutes and series related to legal transactions of the company's main office, as opposed those series directly related the daily operations of individual canneries, were received by the Vancouver City Archives in 1984 and 1986 as direct gifts from Ian Bell-Irving. These records include Land Transfers from 1861, but the majority of the items were created between 1891 and In 1989 Special Collections transferred 75 linear feet of records to the offices of the Northcoast Marine Museum Society in Port Edward, B.C. This material included invoices, journal and cash vouchers generated at the Arrandale and North Pacific Canneries between 1922 and The items were deaccessioned by the university because their information was judged to be exist on the documents. There are no restrictions on this fonds. v

7 Subgroup/Series Descriptions Subgroup 1 A.B.C. Packing Co Vancouver Office, m. of textual records. The Vancouver Office of A.B.C. Packing Co. was established in Vancouver on the formation of the firm in It was located in the offices of H. Bell Irving and Co., which served as administrator and sales agent of the firm. Series in the sub-group consist of the financial records of the firm, including general ledgers, journals and cash books. Also included are reports of the cannery managers on production and operating information regarding product marketing, sales and distribution. 8 Subgroup 2 Alert Bay Plant, m of textual records. The Alert Bay Cannery, located on the north-east coast of Vancouver Island, was originally built in 1880 and rebuilt in 1912 by B.C. Canners Limited. It was purchased by A.B.C. Packers in the 1940's and was one of the firm's major operations. Series in the sub-group include general correspondence, general financial records, ledgers, and production records for fishing and canning operations. 9 Subgroup 3 Boswell Cannery, , 4 cm of textual records The Boswell Cannery, located on Boswell Inlet, was constructed in 1926 by Gosse Packing Co. Ltd. And sold to B.C. Packers Co. It was leased to A.B.C. The Britannia Shipyards Cannery, located in Steveston on the Fraser River, was built in 1890 and operated in conjunction with a fishing boat repair and construction facility. Records include general financial and production records generated on-site by the cannery operation. Certain financial records were maintained jointly with the neighbouring Phoenix Cannery and identified as `Phoenix and Britannia" records. Subgroup 6 Good Hope Cannery, m of textual records The Good Hope Cannery, located in Rivers Inlet, was constructed in 1894 as the first new cannery to be constructed by A.B.C. Packing Co. Series in the subgroup include general financial and production records generated on-site. 12 Subgroup 9 North Pacific Cannery, m. of textual records The North Pacific Cannery was located on the Skeena River near Prince Rupert. It was bult in 1890, but was inoperative from 1915 until the mid-1920's. It was one of the A.B.C. Packing Co.'s largest canneries. The single series in the subgroup represents general correspondence and financial records selected by the Special Collections Division as representative of the whole material from the extensive records of the cannery and not as yet arranged cm.
