6 Developing a Campaign mentality Establish a Timeline for YOUR Sale. There is no need to utilize the full timeline the Council offers it is longer than most direct sales campaigns. Adopt a timeline that works for your unit and push hard within that timeframe. Set a sales goal for your unit and for each den or patrol. Most important step a unit can do. Base this goal on your actual budget needs. Communicate the unit s plan to the den/troop leaders and together determine a sales goal for each Scout based on the unit s goal. Conduct a fun-filled kick-off event for Scouts and their parents. Emphasize what the Scouts will receive for hitting their goal; prizes, Scouting programs, camp, etc. Provide Family Success Sheet that spells out: the purpose of the sale. how the money raised will be used. what the per-scout goal is. They will be much more interested when they know this information. Consider using some of the unit s commissions to offer additional incentives that your Scouts can also enjoy. Encourage ALL your Scouts to go out and sell! 67% of people will buy when asked, and only 18% of the public is approached! Sell to friends, family members, neighbors, etc. Take Parent Take Order form to work. Set up an organized Super Saturday at the beginning of the sale to help give your Scouts a good start to their sale. Have a victory celebration! Have a fun activity planned at the end of your Super Saturday, like a pizza party or hot dog cookout. At the first pack/troop/crew meeting after the sale ends, give out prizes, additional incentives, trophy to top-seller(s) and remind everyone how the money raised will help Scouts and parents fund their year in Scouting. 6

7 Sales Methods Show n Deliver Scouts will have some of the product on hand before the sale begins. When going door to door with a Take Order form, Scouts offer the consumer an opportunity to purchase the Popcorn and take the product on the spot. Scouts will make additional deliveries in a few weeks to fulfill remaining requests. Leftover product is used to fulfill Take Order needs. Advantage: High dollar sales per customer and only 1 visit per customer. Reduces time spent delivering. Show n Sell Unit orders product up front and sets up in front of a busy storefront. 1. Secure location prior to the sale: Ask store manager for permission. Some good locations: supermarkets, convenience stores, shopping malls, donut shops, hardware stores, rest stops, etc. 2. Work in two-hour shifts. Don t have the entire unit attend at one time. 3. Do not block the store entrance. 4. Be sure to leave the location clean. 5. Set up a display of the products. Do not use tables; Scouts tend to hide behind them. 6. Sales are credited to the Scouts working the shift at the time of the sale 7. Left over product is used to fulfill Take Order needs. Advantage: When selling in a group with leaders, it is a good training ground for Scouts. Typically, lower dollar sales but when combined with the Take Order method will increase sales. Take Order Sale The Scout goes door to door with a Take Order form. The customer writes his/her order and the Scout delivers product and collects the money in a few weeks. 1. Set up a sales territory within your unit s area. 2. Assign two Scouts to a territory. 3. Have a parent accompany each sales team. 4. Determine the timeline for when orders are due to the leader. 5. Two out of three people will buy. 6. Only 18% of households have been called on to buy popcorn. Advantage: High dollar sales per customer & only order what you need On-Line Sales Scouts contact friends and family members in person or via and phone and provides them with his seller ID. Consumer logs onto and orders product, pays by credit card, and has product delivered to their home. Scouts can also provide their seller ID to customers when delivering their orders. Advantage: Allows Scouts to sell to friends and family members who live out of state. Also allows for repeat purchases and a longer sale. 7

12 Scout Selling Tips ALWAYS wear your uniform. Everybody loves to support a Scout in uniform. ALWAYS sell in pairs accompanied by an adult, and never sell after dark unless you are with an adult. ALWAYS act like a Scout, and be polite and courteous. Wear a smile and introduce yourself. ALWAYS walk on the sidewalk and driveway, NOT through the yard. Watch for traffic. NEVER carry large amounts of cash with you. NEVER enter anyone's home. Remember to always have two pens with you and make sure you keep your Take-Order Form as neat as possible. Statistics show four out of five homes buy Scout popcorn when asked. Most importantly, when you are selling the popcorn, tell the people what the money goes for. Have them read the back side of the Take-Order Form. Make sure you know the date when you will be delivering the popcorn to your customers. In case no one is at home, write a letter (and make copies of it) explaining the popcorn sale and why you are selling it. Mention when you will be back or how they can purchase Scout popcorn Not every house will buy so do not become discouraged. The more people you ask, the more people will buy. Put popcorn sale articles in your school, church, and community bulletins/newsletters. Ask your parents to help you sell popcorn at their workplaces for employee or customer gifts. Better yet, ask your parents if you can go to their offices and sell. Remind your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors what a great gift popcorn makes for teachers, friends, co-workers etc. Also, let them know how quickly it runs out and to buy enough from you to last them until next year. Ask your friends at your place of worship if they would like to buy some popcorn. Write a thank you note and place a copy of it on all the popcorn you deliver to let everyone know how much you appreciate their support. (This will benefit you next year when you call on them.) Remember to say Thank You when you hand deliver it. Keep your Take-Order Forms so you can call on these people again next year. People will remember how polite and courteous you were, the nice thank you note they received, and the Pecatonica River popcorn that they did not buy enough of during the sale! Don t forget to go to the neighborhoods where you do Scouting For Food. 12
