Special Interest Group on Intellectual Asset Management (SIG IAM) June 2016 at IMEC in Leuven, Belgium NOVOTEL Centrum Leuven Summary While IP business in innovation was for a long time a rather staged process with the obvious actors appearing at the right point in time, today, this business becomes much more complex, due to contradicting trends, in particular a shift to later life cycle activities of governmental funds versus engaging of capital investors and capital backed IP business models in early life cycle activities. This Special Interest Group meeting will be hosted by IMEC - the Interuniversity Micro Electronics Center - an EIRMA member based in Leuven. It will include a dedicated visit to IMEC Cleanroom and the Bio-Incubator of the Arenberg Science Park. As an RTO, IMEC does not escape from this phenomenon and will illustrate this with a few examples. Further, IMEC sees this challenge also as an opportunity to re-balance its R&D life cycle model (and will point to some recent developments in this respect), but caution also for the uncontrollability aspect if not a proper terminology (be it in terms of mixed business models) is used. In view of this - which applies also for the university ecosystem - the need for a supporting environment, like incubators and methodologies, is apparent and made an integral part of this programme, in order to get grip on the overall business aspects (instead of a dogmatic IP approach) and to provide the IP business leadership and operational training for the involved persons. Participants will also have the opportunity to actively share their challenges, experiences and solutions during the carousel session on two topics: Cost control when using external IP services How to make R&D people aware of the importance of IP for their own work Issues addressed < How Venture Capitalists select promising business to invest in? < How can IP make the difference in their decision? < To which extent can IP help to make it a sustainable business? < Which choices to make with a restricted IP budget such as filing strategies and types of IP? < How can infrastructure providers support in practice? Target Audience R&D, innovation & intellectual asset managers and experts, IP and licensing managers, patent attorneys as well as business strategy, business development managers, Corporate Venturing managers. Key themes Chairman Werner Fröhling, Managing Director, Flooring Technologies Ltd. and Chief IP Counsel for the Swiss Krono Group 8 Online registration before 13 June 2016 Innovation Processes Business strategy Intellectual Asset People and Knowledge Public frameworks
