1 AM Institute 2012 Business Strategy Forum 3-4 March 2012 Executing Strategy in a Low Growth Environment Novotel Sydney Manly Pacific 55 North Steyne

2 Message from the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Twelve months on from the release during December 2010 of the Federal Government s Competition and Sustainable Banking Reform Package the future pathway has become a little clearer with the new Financial Claims Scheme with a deposit guarantee of $250k to replace the $1m Deposit Guarantee Scheme from February We have also seen two credit unions and one mutual building society take advantage of the new opportunity to become a mutual bank with more lined up to follow in These developments have been unfolding in an environment of increasing market fragility driven primarily from sovereign risk issues in Europe and the fiscal constraints dragging upon the US economy. Talks of a post GFC recession loom loud with knock on affects throughout world markets impacting on cost and availability of wholesale funding and dramatic changes in consumer behaviour that favour saving ahead of consuming and borrowing. This market environment is heralding a new set of challenges for the mutual ADI sector firstly in contemplating how best to navigate strategic direction in an unfamiliar low growth environment whilst simultaneously continuing to invest in our people, our brand and our technological capability with a view to taking market share away from the four major banks. There is also the added challenge of meeting the ongoing wave of new regulatory requirements some of which are being driven from Australia s role within a global regulatory determination to respond to lessons learnt through the GFC. Basel III is being rolled out over the next five years with significant impacts for the Australian economy, banks and mutuals. So it is within this context that the AM Institute 2012 Business Strategy Forum has thus been fashioned to inspire the leaders of credit unions, mutual building societies and mutual banks to explore their market potential to deliver an even better banking service proposition to all Australians. The 2012 Forum will also link into the United Nations 2012 International Year of the Co-operatives by inviting members of the broader co operative movement to join with us to explore business to business opportunities. The program adopts the traditional environmental scanning format covering:- Examination of the economic, political and regulatory environment incorporating a full industry briefing from Abacus. Exploration and contemplation of strategic options for mutuals in a low growth environment inclusive of some industry case studies. Consideration of the opportunities that may arise from a closer collaboration between mutual ADIs and other forms of co-operatives and mutuals. New thinking around balance sheet management and the risk and return equation in light of the Basel III capital and liquidity implications. A review of the customer and technological landscape to ensure market relevance and productive use of resources. Whilst the program is sure to ignite lots of creative energy there will also be some important social events including the AM Institute 2012 National Golf Championship to be played on Friday 2nd March along with the Forum Dinner on the Saturday evening featuring comedian Greg Hayes along with musical entertainment from Soul Juice. On behalf of AM Institute s Board and Management we have put together a topical and contemporary program designed to support the leadership of credit unions, mutual building societies and mutual banks in their strategic thinking and planning. This year we have the opportunity to broaden our thinking even further through the infusion of the broader co-operative movement the horizon is exponential and the opportunities appear boundless. We look forward to your participation and contribution to a successful business strategy forum. Ken Campbell Chairman Graham Olrich Chief Executive Officer
