1 AIM SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE SDC STRATEGIC TOPICS

2 SDC TERMS OF REFERENCE Brands lead in society and are recognised by consumers and other stakeholders as driving sustainability through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The goal of the SDC is to position AIM as thought-leader, and brand owners as execution experts on sustainable development. The role of the SDC is to: Help shape the EU policy agenda through proactive communication to policy makers and stakeholders on key sustainability topics; Interact with relevant stakeholder organisations / platforms to explain and contribute brand perspective; Promote effective, transparent and credible communication on sustainable development throughout the value chain. AIM SDC activity is focused on EU advocacy and complementary to other sustainabilityrelated AIM initiatives, such as AIM-PROGRESS and Brands Nudging for Good. 2

CIRCULAR ECONOMY EU Plastics Strategy Engage in policy / stakeholder dialogue Engage in the Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform Focus areas: Plastic packaging design (e.g. recycled content) Commitments / pledges Incentivisation to use alternatives (including EPR fee modulation) Viable secondary raw material markets Recycling capacities, e.g. monitor call for a fund solution to finance investment needs in sorting and recycling sites; if necessary take an AIM position Single-use plastics possible EU legislation Design for circular economy / eco-design / recyclability (broader than plastics) Visibility of brand engagement: showcase what leading brands are doing (website, EU stakeholder platform) Exchange best practice Take position on incentivisation of recyclability and recycled content (modular EPR fees, legislation) Dialogue with recycling stakeholders EPR schemes / collection systems Implement minimum common requirements Ensure fair allocation of costs Take position on initiatives affecting collection, sorting, recycling capacities Support harmonised modular fee systems which enable / drive circular solutions Waste legislation review Follow and support EUROPEN lead, provide input on brand-specific topics 4

SUSTAINABILITY COMMUNICATION Sustainability / Environmental communication to consumers Common / harmonised position /s ystem for consumer communication: Alignment with new AIM TF on consumer transparency input to PEF communication discussions Analyse pro s and con s of existing approaches: EU PEF communication Smartlabel TM Eco-label type approaches: AISE logo (PEF), EU eco-label Green claims / environmental communication: Further monitor EU and UNEP work Sustainable consumption Nudging for Good Support AIM Nudge initiative Propose consumer nudges relevant to circular economy, e.g. sorting of packaging waste 5

ROLE OF RETAILERS Dialogue with retailers / addressing retailer requests Exchange & align with EuroCommerce where relevant Direct dialogue with retailers at AIM SDC meetings: where do we have common interests? B2B: Monitor retailer approaches to environmental information and requests to manufacturers B2C: Propose constructive solutions to provision of environmental information (ref. priority topic on sustainability communication) EU Retail Forum on Sustainability Continue role as stakeholder in the Forum Provide input to Forum meetings, debates and papers Raise issues, where necessary, for common solutions 6

ALIGNMENT WITH CONSUMER GOODS FORUM Ensure member awareness of CGF resolutions/activities with relevance for SDC, e.g. waste management, circular economy, deforestation, etc. Invite CGF or member company active in CGF environmental sustainability pillar to report at meetings Input to and align on CGF positions and support execution of global commitments in Europe with relevance for SDC 7

8 MONITORING: CSR / RESPONSIBLE SUPPLY CHAINS Responsible sourcing Lead: AIM-PROGRESS Non-financial reporting Lead as brands on implementing non-financial reporting schemes, e.g. GRI Monitor EU legislative developments Social engagement Cases of excellence to be featured on AIM website 8

9 MONITORING: FOOTPRINTING / MEASUREMENT PEF / OEF Continue to monitor development of pilots Provide input to communication and policy debate, where relevant (communication to be handled under priority Sustainability Communication) 9
