3 Event overview The conference The NSW Mining Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) and Awards brings together key policy experts and decision makers to talk about the operational and regulatory challenges, issues and opportunities in our industry. We will cover the topics that matter to a range of experts, leaders and specialists, from risk, communications and safety to rehabilitation, mine closure planning and community engagement. We share leading practice in our industry and hear from experts from other industries. Plus we celebrate our achievements with awards for leadership and excellence in HSEC. 10 d. Plenary Session 4 (Tuesday) New in 2018 This session with former NRL player and brain cancer survivor Mark Hughes is bound to inspire. Along with some of his former team mates from the 1997 NRL premiership winning team, Mark will talk to us about the journey they made together to Everest base camp in 2017 to raise money for the Mark Hughes Foundation to help find a cure for brain cancer. Leadership masterclass with our keynote speaker Dr Joe McInnis New in 2018 Dr Joe McInnis is an expert in leadership in high-risk environments, and he will share is lessons in leadership from an incredible life in a keynote presentation and a special masterclass at our conference. McInnis is a Canadian doctor, author, underwater diver and scientist. In 1974, he was the first scientist to dive in the near-freezing waters beneath the North Pole and has led ten research expeditions under the Arctic Ocean. He was one of the first people to dive the wreck of the RMS Titanic and is a mentor to director James Cameron, acting as a medical advisor on his 2012 seven-mile science dive into the Mariana Trench. McInnis has worked with the U.S. Navy, the Canadian forces, the French government and the Russian Academy of Sciences. In Australia, he has worked with CSIRO. As well as a keynote presentation, Dr McInnis will host a special 2-hour masterclass for 20 hand-picked future leaders in our industry.
