5 Leather Sectional Committee, CDC 16 FOREWORD This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 31 March 1989, after the draft finalized by the Leather Sectional Committee had been approved by the Chemical Division Council. Generally leather of all types whether finished or semifinished, is purchased on the basis of area except vegetable tanned leather which is purchased on the basis of mass. However, small scale manufacturers do not have proper facility for measurement of hides and skins. They invariably use traditional method of measurement which often creates disputes between the purchaser and the manufacturer. Considering the importance of this trade, it was felt necessary to formulate guidelines for the measurement of such hides and skins to facilitate a smooth transaction between the manufacturer and the purchaser. In the formulation of this standard, considerable assistance has been derived from IS : 1979 Guidelines for trimming of Indian cattle hides.
